Somali president lands in Addis Ababa for AU’s 32nd assembly

A high-level delegation headed by Somali president, H.E Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has landed in Addis Ababa, to attend the African Union summit.

The 32nd ordinary session of the assembly of the African Union is set to kick off in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa on Sunday.

Several African leaders have already arrived for the conference including Somali President, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo on Saturday.

The president is expected to address the summit on Sunday.

The AU Assembly was preceded by the 34th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council that took place from 7 to 8 February 2019.

The Summit is expected to deliberate on a number of other vital issues, including refugees, the institutional reform and financing of the continental body; peace and security on the continent; developments related to the African continental free trade area; and negotiations for a new cooperation agreement between the African, Caribbean and Pacific developing countries and the European Union Post-2020.

As a founding member of the Organisation of African Unity(OAU), and its chair in 1964, 1989 and 1993, Egypt is set to take over the chair of African Union; Egyptian President Abdulfatah Al Sisi is the new chair.

In addition, consideration will also be given to the election of the Chairperson of the AU for 2020 – a position that will rotate to the southern African region.

Further, the election of five members of the AU peace and security council; the appointment of one member of the AU Commission on international law; and one member of the African committee of experts on the rights and welfare of the child.
