Somaliland: National Elections Commission Offers Resignation To President

Hargeisa, (Qaran new)- The Somaliland National Elections Commission (NEC) has offered it’s resignation to President Muse Bihi Abdi. According to reliable sources in the presidency, the commission met with the president on Friday and tendered it’s resignation.

There has been no official confirmation from the presidency as to whether the offer was made, or whether it was accepted or rejected.

The commission which has been the subject of severe division between the three Somaliland political parties, Kulmiye, Waddani and UCID, appears to have finally succumbed to pressure from the public.

The Somaliland National Elections (NEC) which recently stated it’s inability to hold the parliamentary and local elections slated for March 2019, has been widely criticized for it’s abject failure to prepare for those postponed elections.

The withdrawal of support and co-operation by the Waddani party appears to have played a significant role in the offer to resign.

The commission’s tenure was to have expired in November, 2019, ahead of the proposed parliamentary and local elections rescheduled for December, 2019.

It is not clear, at the time of writing whether this offer to resign is genuine or an attempt by the commission to gain backing from the presidency.

It is also not clear, whether all or some of the members of the current commission will be re-nominated by the administration and the political parties in Somaliland.
