N.O.R.F Posted January 7, 2007 Medics declared boy dead on the spot By Nasouh Nazzal, Staff Reporter Ras Al Khaimah: A Somali boy died after he fell into an open manhole in Al Muaireed on Wednesday. Two-year-old Abdul Qader Abdul Shakour Mohyi was with his mother late at night near the Qeba'a School when the accident happened, said a senior police officer. The officer said for a few seconds the mother did not notice she had lost her only son as it was dark and the boy did not cry out when he fell in the hole. After some time the woman noticed her son was missing and looked around and into the drainage hole. Her wails alerted a Pakistani taxi driver who rushed to help the woman. The officer said the taxi driver jumped into the hole and managed to get the boy out. The police were called, but the medics declared the boy dead on the spot. The body was taken by the police for further investigation. The Somali mother could not stop crying after the incident and had to be admitted to a hospital. The residents and neighbours of the Somali family said open manholes can be found everywhere in the emirate, but mainly in the Al Maamoura, Al Muaireed and Al Jolan neighbourhoods.
