Posted January 19, 2019 Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency [NISA] said it captured an Al-Shabab member during a covert operation carried out in Mogadishu on 18th January 2019. NISA announced the arrest in a statement on its Twitter account on Friday, seen by Radio Shabelle. “In a careful and planned operation, the security forces detained a member leading Al-Shahab Amniyat operation in Mogadishu,” said NISA in the Twitter post. The spy agency did not disclose the identity of the militant but said he was the kingpin of Al-Shabab’s Amniyat wing operating in the Somali capital. Al-Shabab has stepped up attacks in the capital as part of its struggle to topple the Western-backed Somali Federal government based in Mogadishu and fighting AMISOM.
