U.S. Trump administration African affairs Secretary acknowledges Somaliland legal case for quest of state hood.

Q- Somaliland has been peaceful and democratic for 27 years, why hasn't the United States engaged Somaliland in a more meaningful way?

A- United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Tibor Nagy:
Somaliland does have a legal argument it makes, of course that has to be teated in the appropriate fora. The United States normally when it comes to recognising states in Africa will consult with the African Union. The integrity of the state of Somalia is an important precept for the African Union, so, the United States of America is dealing with the government in Mogadishu. We are doing our best to strengthen that government both in its economic development but also in the security environment. So, for the time being, the US policy is to deal with Mogadishu, to work with the government in Mogadishu to strengthen that part of the Horn of Africa.

Somaliland should go back to lobbying the African Union. It should get it to actually act on its fact-finding mission of 2005. The African Union mission reported that Somaliland’s case is a unique one, which should be judged “from an objective historical viewpoint and a moral angle vis-à-vis the aspirations of the people”. The mission recommended that the African Union should “find a special method for dealing with Somaliland” and confirmed that Somaliland’s status was “not linked to the notion of opening a Pandora’s Box” in Africa.

Somaliland has a very strong legal case. It is just politics that is not on its side. It will eventually get its hard won independence.
