Al-Shabaab says it killed security official in Middle Shabelle region

Al-Shabaab claimed it killed a senior Somali security officer in Middle Shabelle region, south of Somalia, the latest in series of assassinations targeting army personnel by the militants.

The victim, Mohamed Ali Mohamed [Kartoon] was shot dead in Galbole by assailants armed with pistols, according to a statement posted on the Al-Shabaab-affiliated media outlet.

The group said the slain officer was working with the African Union Mission in Somalia [AMISOM] as an undercover agent. There were no immediate sources verifying the claims.

Al-Shabaab often carries out executions in areas under its control in the south and central Somalia as part of the decade-long insurgency in the Horn of Africa country.
