Kenya to deploy additional police along Kenya-Somalia border

The government will deploy at least one thousand additional police reservists along the Kenya-Somalia border in Wajir County as efforts to counter violent extremism intensify.

Northeastern regional coordinator regional Mohammed Birik says the process of training the police reservists has been concluded and the officers are properly equipped.

And in efforts to enhance cohesion among security agents and local communities, authorities in the area have launched sporting activities in the frontier counties of Garissa, Mandera, and Wajir as a way of building trust among the two groups.

The Al-Shabaab militia has often taken advantage of the porous Kenya-Somalia border to gain entry into the country to launch terrorist attacks with often fatal consequences.

The government has now vowed to enhance surveillance along the border and the frontier counties to ensure security for residents in those Counties.

The National and County Government in partnership with development partners has come up with innovative ways of building trust between youth in the region and security agents.

Youth drawn from the region will square it out in a football contest against security agents in a match that seeks to build bridges between the two groups.

Area leaders saying such activities are among Government initiatives designed to deal with the adverse effects of radicalization.

Additional police reservists will also be deployed along the Kenya Somalia border to complement security agencies.
