Chimera Posted September 9, 2009 Geedka Nolosha was a Somali movie made in the 80s which won a few awards at international film festivals. Though i havent seen the movie yet i found this interview with the director very interesting:Interview He wonderfully tells about the Somali film industry and film festivals that used to be held in Mogadishu. He mentions a feature film adaption of Sayyid Abdullah Hassan's life(i was really schocked, i didn't know a movie was made about him) This is something i already suspected, there was a lively film culture in Somalia with actual feature films being made not just Riwaayads. The Somali Film Agency in Mogadishu and independent film makers kept this industry before the war afloat. I hope copies were made of these films so they can be re-released for the new generation. Chimera Posted September 10, 2009 He should atleast air it on Universal TV if he wants more exposure of his film. Right now I have no clue what the movie is about. Have you seen it?
5 Posted September 10, 2009 I almost thought you were talking about Terrence Malick's up-coming film The Tree of Life (starring Brad Bitt). Your post is very interesting. Although I very openly and passionately hate the TV, I do like cinema a lot. The thought of Somalia having a film festival is quite nice That is definitely something I did not know. It's good to hear positive stuff from her past.
Chimera Posted September 10, 2009 It's quite sad, this Somali Film Festival was as prestigious as the Cairo Film Festival of today.
Cawaale Posted September 11, 2009 ^ No. i haven't seen it. i agree with you. had he aired it on Universal it would make a good watch, people are tired of the never ending TV commercials. But again the film was not a one man show, you know one has to make a lot of consideration before airing multinational art, and prize wining film on TV. Also I'm not sure if he is aware of that Universal, Raad, ETN and the other local Somali channels are existed.
