NAIROBI (Caasimada Online)–Kenyan police soldiers on board have come under an ambush attack by Al Shabaab, following roadside bomb explosion in the coastal town of Lamu.

The blast hit police vehicle carrying soldiers near Yad area in Lamu town as heavily armed militants launched an ambush attack on soldiers, a witness said.

The attack triggered a brief clash between Kenyan police soldiers and Al Shabaab fighters armed with RPGs and machine-guns.

Kenyan police says its soldiers had repulsed the militants’ surprise attack, saying heavy loses had inflicted upon the group’s fighters.

The group’s media aired that several Kenyan police soldiers had left dead in the attack in Lamu.

“We have killed scores of soldiers following bomb explosion hit police vehicle, then, our fighters started shooting at soldiers”, the group said.

It remains unclear the exact number of soldiers or militants were killed in the attack.

The Islamist militant group in Somalia has also claimed to have carried out massive attack on Kenyan military army camp in the coastal town of Lamu, killing at least ten soldiers.

Al Shabaab said its fighters had also captured 3 soldiers alive during the raid.

The group vowed to rump its attacks against Kenyan forces in northeastern region, until Nairobi withdraws its forces under Afran Union peaceeping force from Somalia.

Kenya says it has suffered since their arrival in Somalia in 2011 – but, adding, it will not affect its mission and will only strengthen their resolve to achieve regional peace.

Kenya contributes about 4,000 troops to the 22,000-strong African Union force in Somalia, battling against Al Shabaab.
