Somalia: Al-Shabaab “captured” Kenyan troops

MOGADISHU (Caasimada Online) — Somali Islamist militant group Al-Shabab has claimed to have overrun an army base runs by Kenyan military forces in Lamu town.

The group said its fighters carried out massive attack on Kenyan military base in the coastal town of Lamu, killing ten soldiers.

In a statement aired by Radio Andulus, an Al-Shabaab mouthpiece said, the group’s fighters also captured three Kenyan soldiers with injuries.

The group’s claims coincides after Kenyan military said its forces launched a dawn operation against Al Qaeda inspired group of Al Shabaab.

KDF Colonel, Public Affairs, Paul Njuguna said the militaray forces killed 10 Al-Shabaab militants and recovered seven AK47 rifles, ammunition during in Lamu operation

Njuguna says 3 Kenyan military officers sustained injuries from the raid and were airlifted to Nairobi for medical treatment.

Kenya says its suffered since their arrival in Somalia in 2011 – but, adding, it will not affect its mission and will only strengthen their resolve to achieve regional peace.

Kenya contributes about 4,000 troops to the 22,000-strong African Union force in Somalia, battling against Al Shabaab.
