Somali Parliament to resolve country’s latest political rifts

MOGADISHU (Caasimada Online) — Somalia’s Upper House of Federal Parliament has debated latest political rifts between central government and regional leaders after a meeting in the capital of Mogadishu.

The Upper House lawmakers agreed to form a new committee, who will be sent to the capitals of regional states in Somalia.

The new team will review the latest political crises between central government and regional administration, in a bid to heal the tension, said in a memo obtained by Caasimada Online.

The Upper house called on the regional leaders to stop the political tension, after the meeting in Mogadishu.

“We are committed to work hard to resolve the current crisis”, the memo said.

The political disagreement emerged after the five regional chiefs took an unprecedented step to suspend working relationship with the central government.

Earlier this week, Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has invited all regional State leaders to attend an urgent meeting of National Security Council in Somali capital Mogadishu.

The President proposed the meeting to take place 17th-18th September to discuss on political, security issues and fighting against Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab and Islamic State groups in Somalia.

The unprecedented step took by the regional leaders is said to be the latest political setback by the central government which is trying to partner with the international community to stabilize the Horn of Africa nation.

The move by the regional leaders seems a potentially political setback in Somalia, amid on-going efforts to make peace in the war-revenged country.
