hadhwanaag 2007-08-15 (Hadhwanaagnews) The London-based Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET) is recruiting a Head Nurse Tutor and Principal Lecturer to deliver a new programme of work based at the Institute of Health Sciences, the government nurse training college in Hargeisa, Somailand. The postholders will be responsible for implementing a two year nurse tutor training course and a two year programme of continuous professional development (CPD) for practising nurse tutors in Somaliland.

NURSE TUTOR TRAINING PROGRAMME

 

Job Title: Head Nurse Tutor, Nurse Tutors Training Programme/Deputy Director

Hours: 44.5 hours per week, 8hrs a day x 5.5 days a week

 

Locations: Institute of Health Sciences (principal), Amoud University, Burao School of Nursing, Edna Adan School of Nursing

 

Reports to: Director, IOHS

 

Overall Job Purpose

 

The post holder is responsible for the successful implementation of:

• A two-year Nurse Tutor Training Course

• A two year programme of Continuous Professional Development for existing nurse tutors

• And support the strengthening of nurse training institutions

Key Responsibilities

 

1. Responsible for the overall delivery of the programme, ensuring effective implementation, documentation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting of all activities.

 

2. Deputise for the IOHS Director as required.

 

3. Provide leadership, supervision and mentoring for staff team. This includes staff appraisals.

 

4. Ensure that the principles on which the programme has been founded, including institutional strengthening, probity, transparency and effective communication are maintained.

 

5. Provide effective management to ensure implementation of the overall programme, giving particular emphasis to monitoring and quality assurance.

 

6. Actively participate in the revision and development of nursing/midwifery curricula.

 

7. Undertake periodic institutional assessments of the training institutions participating in the programme and complete education environment audits.

 

8. Responsible for the selection candidates for courses and programmes. This includes, ensuring that entrance requirements are met and agreed procedures are adhered to.

 

9. Develop an induction pack for new students and ensure that new staff and students receive appropriate inductions.

 

10. Undertake teaching and marking responsibilities as required for groups of students on both the nurse tutor programme and CPD programmmes. Quality assure the work of other lecturers.

 

11. Ensure students and staff are regularly assessed based on a common standard and, if needs be, remedial action taken to help them reach their goals. Where students or staff do not meet the agreed standards, ensure agreed processes are followed. Ensure that undue efforts to deviate from the agreed standards is dealt with and reported to all partners in the Health Systems Strengthening Programme.

 

12. Lead the development, revision, implementation and effective administration of courses and study days.

 

13. Establish and lead quality assurance, evaluation and audit – ensuring that staff capacity is built in this regard.

 

14. Ensure policies are established and followed to manage staff and student conduct, discipline and complaints management.

 

15. Contribute to the IOHS as a Lecturer and lead team and staff meetings.

 

16. Oversee and support the effective clinical supervision and practice facilitation of students.

 

17. Ensure effective communication with students, staff and those working in other institutions.

 

18. Be an effective role model to all staff within the working environment and to students studying there.

 

19. Ensure adherence to training institute policies and procedure at all times. Assist with the development /revision of policies and procedures where necessary.

 

20. Work within the clinical guidelines.

 

21. Ensure that training equipment, facilities and the broader training environment are effectively managed.

 

22. Promote safe working practices.

 

23. Ensure accurate records are maintained and work with colleagues to collate data in relation to assessments and service statistics.

 

24. Attend training, education, seminars, conferences and workshops to meet personal CPD needs.

 

25. Participate in programme related events, community engagements and promote the development of the programme and the nursing profession.

 

26. Responsible for the preparation of high quality, and timely reports, to meet the needs of management, MOHL, and donor institutions.

 

27. Undertake any additional duties deemed appropriate to skills, experience and ability.

Remuneration & benefits

 

The postholder will be entitles to the following remuneration and benefits:

 

1. Salary of $12,000 per year paid in monthly installments of $1000 per month.

 

2. Accommodation allowance of $300 per month.

 

3. Return flight to and from Somaliland at the beginning and the end of the two year appointment.

 

4. One return flight home at the end of Year 1 of the appointment.

 

5. One paid seven day ‘rest and recuperation’ visit to a neighbouring country per year.

 

6. 25 days paid annual leave (plus national holidays)

 

7. Medical / accident insurance

A Lead Nurse Tutor is sought to deliver a two year programme of work based in Hargeisa, Somaliland. The postholder will be responsible for implementing and leading a nurse tutor training course and a continuous professional development “CPD” programme for nurse tutors across Somaliland.

 

The postholder will play a key role in supporting and strengthening nurse training institutes in Somaliland. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of human and institutional capacity, crucial for the rebuilding of the health system in Somaliland.

 

Reporting to the Director of the Institute of Health Sciences, the postholder will be based in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland but will be expected to travel to other training institutes in the country.
