Somali MP calls SFG to account all donors’ funds, amid political rifts

MOGADISHU (Caasimada Online) – Somali lawmaker, Abdirizak Mohamed has called the Federal Government to make accurate accounts of all funds from donors in the name of his country, amid on-going political rifts.

Hon. Mohamed says country’s leaders should be accounted for the funds received from donors in the name of Somalia including cash support from some GCC countries that doesn’t go through the country system

“This is not quid pro quo, but holding government accountable”, in a Twitter feed, he said.

Mohamed said: “In the interest of transparency and since our Federal government demanded accountability via social media, they too should be accounted for the funds it received from donors in the name of Somalia including cash support from some GCC countries”

Hon. Mohamed’s remarks comes hours after country’s regional leaders announced to suspend all ties with the central government, a setback to efforts to pacify the Horn of Africa country as it emerges from two decades of conflict.

The leaders of Jubaland, Puntland, Southwest, Galmudug and Hirshabelle regions officially cut ties with the federal government “until all the previous agreements are implemented”, according to a memo.

The Federal government was also accused of “interfering” regional issues and “failed” to manage security of the country, said in the communique obtained by Caasimada Online.

“We have suspended all cooperation with the federal government over lack of political progress, failure to build national security architecture, “politicisation” of National Intellegence functions and lack of sharing of national income and international aid”, the memo said.

The regional leaders, who have been meeting in Kismayo town, some 500km south of Mogadishu since Tuesday have raised concerns about funding from the Federal Government, reiterating earlier accusations of inadequate support.

In a similar meeting in May held in Baidoa town, the regional leaders claimed that they were not getting a share of international aid to the Federal Government and called donors to funds FMS separately.
