Deeq A. Posted August 16, 2018 MOGADISHU, Somalia (Caasimada Online)—The President of Federal Republic of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has issued a decree on Thursaday, naming Dahir Adan Elmi as a new country’s army chief, amid a wave of attacks by Al-Shabaab. Fahad Yasin, a political insider and right-hand-man to President Farmajo was appointed as a new deputy director for the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), according to a presidential decree. President Farmajo also named two women as the new chief of staff for the presidential Palace and the deputy Police Commissioner, setting a historic precedent. Thursday’s reshuffle is said to be the latest move in President Farmajo’s war against Al Qaeda-linked Al-Shabaab group, battling the weak-westerns backed government of Somalia. The Al-Shabab has been waging an insurgency in Somalia for more than 10 years. A 22,000-strong African Union force is in the country to help the government in fighting against the al-Qaeda-linked militants. The group has been driven out of many urban areas since 2011, however, it still controls territory in rural areas and carries out gun attacks and bombings on military and civilian targets.
