Somalia: AU forces asked to boost war on Al-Shabab

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The African Union peacekeeping forces’ army chief, Lt. Gen. Jim Owoyesigire, has ordered all troops in Somalia to speed up fighting against Al Shabaab.

Lt. Gen. Owoyesigire, urged African Union forces to carry out fresh offensive against Al Qaeda-inspired group of Al Shabaab in south and central Somalia.

He says the permanent joint operations would wipe out the remnants of the group’s fighters battling the weak-western backed government of Somalia.

The joint operations will improve peace and security in the conflict-torn country, Owoyesigire said.

“African Union will equip Somali army forces with the necessary skills for sustainable stability of Somalia”, he said.

He also hailed the cordial working relations existing between African Union (AMISOM) forces and Somali army troops, in the effort to rid the country of Al-Shabaab

The African Union forces have been battling al-Shabab fighters for 10 years.

There are over 21, 000 African Union troops in Somalia, with Uganda contributing the largest portion.
