Malika Posted October 21, 2009 What was yours like? Was there any significant aspect of your childhood, that you remember clearly? If so,why and what triggers that memory? e.g smell, test, feel, sound, emotion etc etc To be fair,I will start off.. Mangoes! I spent most of my pre-teens either jumping fences to gather mangoes and being chased by dogs or the mad Indian neighbors..Or throwing stones up the mango tree in a attempt to get a mango..Fruit gathering was a pass timer in my childhood..Lol
SeeKer Posted October 21, 2009 Tamarinds used to be my achilles heels. I used to climb the tree at school for everyone and get it for them. Off course I used to charge them for my services. I knew I was going to be yelled at for messing up my uniform. My childhood was fun. I wouldn't change anything of it except a couple things but relatively wonderful. I have plenty of tales to regal my lil ones Inshallah. I think for me its the smells of roasted meat Mshakiki . It brings back memory of the neighbourhood guys roasting and selling them for 2 Ksh for a stick of it. (Yummy)

Che -Guevara Posted October 21, 2009 Dodging bullets and anticipating where artillary shells will hit, but then there was cute teacher that I had crush on. She was, well you know and baji iyo bataati (Veggie Pokaras remind me of bajiyo), and dugsi-hated and loved it.

Malika Posted October 21, 2009 ^Che,nuune is Michael Palin of SOL.. Yes,dugsi was great for socialising plus eating tamarids with salt,or sweet coloured ubuyu or kashata[spent my childhood nibbling by the looks of it]..We used to walk the longest way to get to dugsi, collecting literature from Embassies along the way..When we get there,we always had an excuse why we were late, thanks to Hoyo and her donations..We never had trouble lying.. ps.Nuune's memory of Kenya is stuck on Ugali and Maharagwe..lol
Faarax-Brawn Posted October 21, 2009 Childhood? Man, that seemed like a century ago. And there is not a single thing that is distinctive. However, once in a while,I see myself replaying one tradition, over and over. The trips to Miyi. Once a year, during the rainy season( I think it was Deyr),we will all bundle on the back of the Landrover early morning and head to MIYI. Sometimes it is as far as the somali border other times it will not be far . The trip was full of fun. Imagine screeming kids left on the back of an LR? Fights, jostling for a comfortable position. I always sat next to the extra tank of petrol(go figure).Once the trip was underway, We would duck from thorny tree brances . Screeming everytime dad swerves thru the mud and sending water five six feet high in the air. We would stop to pick up reer miyi heading to baadiye and drop them off @some spot. We would stop to get some mareer fruits and caday and pick wild flowers. Once I collected some red small fruits and just before I could put them in my mouth, my cousin told me I will die. Turns out these were poisonous fruits. I am thinking, why would they be red if they are poison? Anyway, these trips were exceptional. And when we see grandma, that was the real fun. The first ritual is drinking caana garoor and codka. Then it is time to play with the goats. L0L. But, one thing sticks to me: The smell of the soil after it just rained. The water dams, the grass, the cow dung, the camel dung and the goat dung combined with the petrol and the engine of a landrover.aaahhhh. The worst part of the trip is the sleepless nights. Caused by of course the sound of dhurwaa, yey, dawaco and libaxs.( I was assured they are miles away, but they seemed to be like 5feet awaY). The other horrible experience is being forced to put on animal fat as lotion…that my friends, smelled like, well, animal sh1t. Oh well…that is a distant past. Now,I am stuck in 35degree weather in the midwest. Obviously, I am paying for some crimes I comitted ages ago. how else could one live in such a place?
