Somaliland: Launching of Press Law Amendment Meeting held in Hargeisa

A meeting to amend the press law of Somaliland was held in Hargeisa. The conference organized by Human Right Center, a local nongovernmental organization in conjunction with Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA). Press law no 27/2004 which was pending and needed amendment finally got the eye of the government.  This is according to news by Somaliland News Agency (Solna).

The Minister of Information, Culture and National Guidance Mr.Abdirahman Abdilahi Farah (Guri-Barwaqo), Director General of Ministry of Information Mr.Ali Mohammed Ali and the Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA) chairman Mr.Mohammud Abdi Jama (Huto) attended the conference.

The chairman of SOLJA Mr.Huto said that about three years the association of journalists was working to promote the implementation of law no 27/2004 which needed some changes here and there. He called on the new government led by President Musa Bihi Abdi to see through the implementation of this law which seeks to introduce check and balances in the press law of the country.

The director general of the ministry of information commended the launching of the press law amendment calling it long overdue. He added that the press law should not be viewed with suspicions as it seeks to bring sanity into the arena of journalism.

Minister Guri-Barwaqo said that the law will bring accountability into the spheres of the press. He went on to say that the government welcomes the move. The minister state that the amendment will make journalism a professional career whereby journalist will be trained and protect the reputation of the profession.
