The mother of a man whose skeletal remains were found in a bush grave months after his killer fled Perth for Somalia has been awarded $23,000 in criminal injuries compensation.

Abdullahi Mohamed Igal, 25, was found buried behind a sports centre in Mirrabooka in October 2015 after Cabdi Qadir Farah admitted to village elders in Somalia he had stabbed Mr Igal to death five months earlier.

Mr Igalโ€™s mother, Ruun Ahmed Awad, said the circumstances in which her son was found was distressing.

โ€œItโ€™s the horrific condition of his remains that were found that really has have me bed bounded,โ€ she said.

Criminal Injuries Compensation chief assessor Helen Porter ruled Ms Awad had suffered psychological injury as a consequence of her sonโ€™s death.

โ€œThere were additional significant stressors, which very likely contributed to her condition and for which I could not include compensation,โ€ Ms Porter said.

โ€œThese included the imprisonment of her (other) son, the death of other close relatives and conflict with the Somalia community in the aftermath of her sonโ€™s murder.โ€
In a statement of material facts, police said Mr Igal and Farah had been friends for years and were drinking alcohol when they had an argument.

It escalated into a physical confrontation and resulted in Mr Igal being repeatedly stabbed in the torso with an unknown weapon.

Police have issued a warrant for Farahโ€™s arrest, but Australia does not have an extradition treaty with Somalia.
