Muzzammil Hassan, 44, was arrested Thursday and charged with second- degree murder after telling police his wife was dead at the office of their television station in the Village of Orchard Park.

While Muslim leaders have urged against applying cultural stereotypes to the crime, advocates for women linked the killing to attitudes in Muslim societies.

“This was apparently a terroristic version of honor killing, a murder rooted in cultural notions about women’s subordination to men,” said Marcia Pappas, New York State president of the National Organization for Women.

She decried the scant national media attention paid to the story, which broke the same day as the commuter plane crash that killed 50 people in Clarence.

While domestic violence affects all cultures, Muslim women find it harder to break the silence about it because of a stigma, she said.

“Too many Muslim men are using their religious beliefs to justify violence against women,” she said.

After episodes of domestic violence, Aasiya Hassan, 37, filed for divorce Feb. 6 and obtained an order of protection barring her husband from their Orchard Park home, her lawyer, Corey Hogan, said.

This is a wake up call to all of us, that violence against women is real and can not be ignored. It must be addressed collectively by every member of our community. Several times each day in America, a woman is abused or assaulted. Domestic violence is a behavior that knows no boundaries of religion, race, ethnicity, or social status. Domestic violence occurs in every community. The Muslim community is not exempt from this issue. We, the Muslim community, need to take a strong stand against domestic violence. Unfortunately, some of us ignore such problems in our community, wanting to think that it does not occur among Muslims or we downgrade its seriousness.

ISNA's open letter addressing Muslim community leaders.

As usual, American media quickly insinuate that Islam is to blame

Domestic violence is widespread and is not attributable to any relgion or race but what I fail to understand is the mean-spirited info that the self-styled human rights orgs and the media spew daily on Muslims and their faith in general. Why do they spread animosity and misconception about Islam? What is their parochial goal? They never get tire of it.

Haneefah, do a personal research on domestic violence in Muslim and Christian nations? Or the Women issue. It's to defend your faith from these wolves.

To the victim, may Allah take her to the Gardens of Naciima.

She asked for divorce and lost her head instead! Those that think it has anything to do with Islam, are as crazy as the guy who did it.

Funny how the tv channel he founded was promoting Muslim tolerance and fighting Muslim stereotypes! Irony @ it's best iga dheh.

Allaha Yarham the deceased.

Haneefa,

Sharing every info. about the muslim community is not in the best interest of the community. It just spreads waswasa/doubt in each other and feeds the muslim complexity that most have developed.

Those of weak iman and will, will associate every NEGATIVE ACTION that a muslim takes with the ENTIRE DEEN.

^And allowing oppression to continue, and innocent lives to be lost, is in the best interest of the community miya? You're misinformed about what spreads fitna, and what doesn't walal. Your obligation as a Muslim is to stop oppression first and foremost. This type of mentality is what propagates certain social ills. (check the domestic abuse thread - some good points were raised there)

XG, I wish we had the answers walal. We certainly need more Muslim researchers and practitioners in this area. I think North American Muslim communities have made a notable progress in addressing family issues and creating a Sharia-informed support mechanism for women; organizations such ISNA and ICNA, among others, are providing much needed services. But more is needed.

This sad incident has sparked further discussion among Muslim community leaders and masses, which is always good.

In response, Shaikh Hamza Yussuf recently did a great lecture on this:

. Explains the most misunderstood ayah in the Quran regarding this issue.

More on Aasiya's murder:

You are thinking as a Women first then Muslim somewhere down the line....

Where as you should be thinking as a Muslim first, your obligation is to the Ummah (which includes men and women) and not just to battered or killed women.

Bad news does not benefit anyone. Hence, why in Islam, Slander is given a Hudood Punishment, making it a grave sin. Precisely because it spreads Fitna and Fitna is worse then Killing because rather than kill bodes, it chokes souls, divides families and turns people into kufr etc.

P.S. This is sickening news and heartbreaking, hence why it is more of a confidence shaker in muslim products and in muslims in general.

Fi Amanillah

Salama alaykum,

Poor woman, may Allah have mercy on her, apparently he has a history of domestic violence. He had previously married two women before and they left him due to domestic abuse. :(

Can you please elaborate on that? Is being a woman not compatible with thinking Islamically? Are you implying that my logic is somehow being obscured by emotion when I say oppression against women needs to be addressed? Doesn't Islam prohibit any form of oppression, even on animals? Are women not part of of this Ummah you speak of, and wouldn't protecting their rights and improving their status be benefitting the greater good of the ummah?

It's as if you're implying that addressing issues specific to women will somehow deprive men of some rights unbeknown to me.

You're right, bad news does not benefit; but the reaction it elicits in society has the potential of bringing about a positive change - a solution to the initial cause of that 'Bad News'. Sometimes, bad news is a great impetus of change.

If silence is what you're proposing, how then shall social problems in our community be addressed?

p.s. I have no clue what brought slander into this discussion?

What damages the image of our good deen is intolerant culture of some Muslims. The act of this guy is not isolated to him alone, this is a culture(honor killing) that is tolerated some part of the Muslim world. Very common in part of Arabia to South Asia and has nothing to do with Islam. But when it gets out and hits outside world, in this case America, media will scrutinized the story and unfortunately it's the religion that is blamed rather than the twisted culture.

All in all, this man should be tried and if found guilty, should be given a highest punishment.

Allah yarxam the innocent woman lost her soul for asking to be freed from that sick man.
