  2. As the saying goes “Boog dusha lagama Dhayoâ€, and if we are really serious about overcoming the current political deadlock in our beloved country, we must not only show better political judgment and critical thinking but more importantly we must be prepared to accept facts. Even if those facts are in conflict with our own political perceptions, thus cannot be reconciled with the futile pursuit of the myopic clan interests. In other words, we must all be intellectually honest with ourselves and with our people. Unfortunately, some of us note failed in all those three accounts. 3. A Reply to Abdirazak H. Hussen's "A Perilous Impasse in Somalia" by Bill Ainashe click on the link to Read the whole thing. http://www.allpuntland.com/eng/news_item.asp?NewsID=1752 Since the creation of the transitional federal government almost a year ago, the destructive Mogadishu warlords, Sharif Hassan; the run-away (former) Speaker of the transitional parliament have used several incoherent and intellectually weak arguments to oppose the government and thus prolong the agony of the Somali people. First, they said that President Abdullahi Yusuf was inviting Ethiopian troops to the country as an invading hostile foreign army. They ignorantly refused to accept the fact that the planned foreign peace-keeping troops were coming to our country under the auspices of the African Union and United Nation’s Security Council with the all the required legal and political provisions. Their main argument was that they; the warlords, could take care of securing Mogadishu. Yet, several months later, there is no hostile Ethiopian invasion in Somali and the anarchy continues in Mogadishu while the destructive Mogadishu warlords are bickering endlessly among themselves. Second, after a never-ending and fruitless high level meetings with the destructive Mogadishu warlords, and Sharif Hassan, President Abdullahi Yusuf and his government decided to look for an alternative city to operate so that they could end the exile of the Somali government. Unfortunately, the destructive Mogadishu warlords, Sharif Hassan and their political alliance including Abdirazak H. Hussen continues their blame-mongering tactic by saying the President is denying Mogadishu its status of being the capital of Somalia. They even went as far as saying; President Abdullahi Yusuf’s true political intention is to make Gaalkacayo the new Somali capital. The fact is that both the President and the government are less than fifty miles away and they are eagerly waiting for an invitation to come to Mogadishu and operate there peacefully. Third, when all the silly arguments they made previously were proven wrong, they are now saying that President Abdullahi Yusuf is building up a tribal army and he wants to invade Mogadishu by military force. That is nonsense! The fact is that the President and his Prime Minister are doing precisely what they were supposed do. Namely, to start rebuilding the collapsed Somali institutions as quickly as they possibly can. Needless to say, no government or institution can exist without an effective security force that could protect it. Therefore, the government must proceed with its plan to reactivate the once proud Somali National Army and make General Daa’uud proud again.

  16. INTERVIEW - Mistrust fuels fighting in Somalia - minister - Saturday, August 13, 2005 at 21:45 By Guled Mohamed NAIROBI, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Somalia's faction fighting will grind on until effective government is restored to the broken country and militia leaders in the administration learn to trust each other, a senior minister said on Saturday. Interior Minister Hussein Aideed said that after the recent formation of the new government in Kenya, the next step is to push for "real reconciliation" at the grassroots within Somalia, bringing on board leaders, elders, women and the young. "There has not been trust between the leaders, within the elite, within the Transitional Federal Government there is mistrust," said Aideed, speaking in the Kenyan capital Nairobi before his planned return to Mogadishu on Sunday after three years' absence. "I believe all of us have made peace and must do what we have signed ... all of us said we will disarm, we will participate peacefully and democratically." Somalia's Transitional Federal Government, the 14th attempt to reinstate government in lawless Somalia, has the task of ending fighting between rival clan warlords but is sharply divided on where the new administration should be based. President Abdullahi Yusuf and his supporters say Mogadishu is too dangerous and have chosen Jowhar, 90 km (55 miles) north of Mogadishu, as the temporary seat of government. But some powerful ministers and Speaker of Parliament Sharif Hassan insist the capital must be Mogadishu as stipulated in Somalia's interim charter. Aideed said he was going to Mogadishu to represent Yusuf's government as had been agreed in Nairobi on June 12, and to ease concerns that there is no government presence in the capital. "I am going to Mogadishu. I will be the caretaker of the State House (president's residence) and office until the government relocates completely from Jowhar and from other areas," Aideed said. He said he would push for reconciliation among the leaders while in Mogadishu. "I play a neutral (role), although I am leaning towards the president's side," he said. "I will continue to mediate between the two groups." GOOD GOVERNANCE Aideed, the son of the former warlord Mohamed Farah Aideed who eluded and embarrassed U.S. forces a decade ago, said the way to end fighting in Somalia was to promote good governance and respect human rights. "All the five governments the Somali republic has had since independence, they couldn't stop the factional and tribal wars. All this can stop once we have a good, transparent way of using the resources, rebuilding and protecting human rights, which were violated throughout our history," Aideed said. Another source of conflict in Somalia's politics is that many among the overwhelmingly Muslim population of 10 million are hostile to what they see as interference by their big, nominally Christian neighbour Ethiopia, historically an enemy. But Aideed said Ethiopia was not the problem and Somalis should look within their own country. "I believe that there is a trend in Somalia to create Ethiopia as the evil empire," he said. "Ethiopia has no interest in invading Somalia. The problem is coming from us not them." Somalia collapsed into chaos after the overthrow of military ruler Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991. Conflict and famine have killed hundreds of thousands of people since then. Source: Reuters Powered by AllPuntland.com Copyright ©AllPuntland.com

  18. http://www.hiiraan.org/2005/aug/somali_news12_3.htm Families try to cope with gun slayings of two young men Summer weekend began with a wedding and ended in death There was no altercation, no sideways glance, not even an exchange of words. A man who watched in horror as two of his friends were shot to death execution-style told the Toronto Star yesterday that nothing had occurred that would have provoked the attack. The friends had just left the Phoenix Concert Theatre early Monday morning. "We were having a good time, just celebrating. We never had any arguments, no problems," he said yesterday before attending the double funeral for Loyan Ahmed Gilao, 23, and Ali Mohamud Ali, 19. "It all happened so fast, in a split second. I was walking behind Ali and he shot him point-blank, execution-style," said the friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "There was no one on the sidewalk, just two prostitutes on the road. We didn't expect it. All you hear is multiple shots and then nothing. And then multiple shots." Ali died from a gunshot wound to the head, while Gilao died from a gunshot to the chest. A third man was also hurt in the shooting around 4 a.m. Before the tragic turn, the trio had been with about a dozen of their buddies at the Sherbourne St. club capping off a celebratory weekend that included a friend's wedding. While at the club, there were no problems between any of the group members and anyone else at the club, said the friend with certainty. After leaving, a group of five headed to a car parked near Homewood Ave. and Maitland Pl. where a man approached them and, without warning, opened fire, said the friend. "It doesn't make sense," he said at the Etobicoke mosque yesterday where 1,500 people united in grief to pay their final respects to the men, heralded as leaders within the Somali community. "They weren't into anything bad," he said, ruling out gang ties or retaliation. His sentiments were echoed by many who said the overwhelming turnout was a testament to how deeply the pair were loved and admired. "As a collective Somali community we are grieving, they were killed for nothing," said Ali's aunt, Khadija Abdi. "All of us are shocked, except for the parents. I think they are dead inside." Both families moved to Canada during the 1980s to give their children a better and safer life, she said. But in a sad twist of fate, the young men were victims of the kind of violence their parents wanted to shield them from. "Loyan's father has been very active in the community promoting peace, and now to have his son killed in that context is very tragic," said Cassandra Fernandes, a policy and community consultant for the city who attended the funeral yesterday on behalf of the mayor. Gilao's father, Mohamed Gilao, is a prominent and well-respected member of Toronto's Somali community who has travelled on various peace missions to his homeland. Yesterday both Gilao's and Ali's parents were too overwhelmed to speak publicly about the loss of their firstborn and only sons. Ali's mother, Suleka Hussein, already fragile from a heart condition, was so overcome with grief that she fainted by the entrance moments after viewing her son's body. One of about a dozen police officers on duty in front of the Khalid Bin Al Waliid mosque was on hand to help. Minutes later paramedics arrived to treat Hussein, who was well enough to return inside shortly after. Relatives of both men, some of whom travelled from British Columbia, Alberta and Virginia to attend the funeral, spoke warmly of the young men's benevolent spirits. "Ali was a generous person, always giving to people what he had," said his sister, Amran Ali Jama. Her red-rimmed eyes filled with tears when she added, "it was just the wrong place and wrong time." Gilao, nicknamed Banks because he'd always find spare change for children, would literally take the shirt off his back for a friend, said aunt Hawa Gilao. "He only had one-third of the clothing he bought in his closet," she said, adding, "he loved to help people." In an effort to "continue his legacy" and keep his memory and name alive, the Gilao family is thinking of starting a foundation in his name, she said, adding the money would likely go to families who've lost children to violence. Friends of the duo remembered them as bright young men with bright futures. "Loyan was the sweetest person you could ever come across," said Roda Ali, who was friends with both men. "And Ali, he could've been somebody really great. They were both the perfect children." Gilao, a third-year York University commerce student, was planning to propose to his girlfriend of three years in the coming months. Meanwhile, Ali had recently moved to Vancouver, where he was trying to start a trucking company. He had returned to Toronto for his friend's wedding and was scheduled to go back to B.C. early this week. After the funeral service, mourners made their way to Beechwood Cemetery, where both men were buried. Gilao leaves his father, mother Ayan Osman and sisters Iman, 8, Lul, 10, Marian, 14, and Meimuna, 20. Ali leaves his mother, father Mahamud Jama and sisters Hibo, 18, Amran, 17, and Deja, 5.
