G8 reaches deal for world's poor The main beneficiaries of the deal could be Africa's poor The world's eight richest countries have reached a landmark debt relief deal to alleviate global poverty. The move provides relief for poor, indebted nations, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, freeing up much-needed revenue. Announcing the deal at a meeting of G8 finance ministers in London, the UK's Gordon Brown said now was "not a time for timidity but a time for boldness". The UK, which will host a summit of G8 leaders next month, has vowed to make poverty reduction a priority. Click here for a map showing highly-indebted poor countries The plan, which was devised by the UK, secured the backing of the US administration on Friday - paving the way for its adoption at the London meeting. Conditions Under the deal, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the African Development Fund will immediately write off 100% of the money owed to them by 18 countries - a total of $40bn (£22bn; 33bn euros). Our agreement in return for debt relief is that it goes towards health... teachers, and infrastructure Gordon Brown Q&A: African debt deal Between them, it will save those countries a total of $1.5bn a year in debt repayments. UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown said up to 20 other countries could be eligible if they meet targets for good governance and tackling corruption. The total package - which needs to be approved by the lending institutions - could be worth more than $55bn. "We are presenting the most comprehensive statement that finance ministers have ever made on the issues of debt, development, health and poverty," Mr Brown said. He added that the plan set the stage for July's G8 summit, where world leaders intend "to forge a new and better relationship, a new deal between the rich and poor countries of the world". US Treasury Secretary John Snow hailed the agreement as "historic". No apologies Relief groups welcomed the plan as a step in the right direction - but said some it should be extended to cover more developing countries. DEBT RELIEF PLAN Debts written off for 18 countries - total $40bn Debt repayments saved by the group each year - $1.5bn Nine more countries to qualify within 18 months - takes total to $55bn UK's contribution over next 10 years: $700-$960m US contribution: $1.3bn-$1.75bn Africa's total external debt: $300bn "The debt deal is very good news for people in the 18 countries that will immediately benefit," said Romilly Greenhill of ActionAid. "But it will do little to immediately help millions in at least 40 other countries that also need 100% debt relief." Earlier John Nagenda, an adviser to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, told the BBC it was time for rich nations to deliver on their promises. "I should be more apologetic and say please help us but where I come from we believe that if you are better off than someone else you help them. It's as simple as that - it's a moral duty." The G8 countries are the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia. Twenty-seven countries are eligible for debt relief under the HIPC (highly-indebted poor countries initiative). The 18 that have reached completion point, and will therefore qualify for immediate debt relief, are shown in bold: Benin, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Guyana, Honduras, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Niger, Rwanda, Sao Tome, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia Click to return

Somali government names first foreign ambassadors
Camel Mlik replied to SOO MAAL's topic in Politics
This is great news. "This is part of a government plan to have its own ambassadors across the world who will assist in putting Somalia back on the map," a spokesman for transitional Somali president Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed told AFP. I guess this government is one the right road let's just hope they do not take the wrong one cause this is a very long road and we are 1/3 their. -
Originally posted by YACQUUB: Puntland does not need ID cards, Somali ID cards should be enough becouse it is not claiming to be a separate entity and anyway there is no need to do it. And off the topic, Puntland needs to change the name from Puntland to "Bunt" as first there is no "p" letter in the Somali alphabet and second it needs to remove the English word of "Land". What do you think? Puntland state does not have to separate itself to have an ID it's no big deal. Why does every state in the United States have an ID card of their own? brother their is a big need because it's the only way to know who is who.

hey what happen to the puntland state ID card are they used today

what makes you say that? turst me brother he sure is a politician because if he was not he would not be the President of Somali. I guess he will go down as the greatest X-war-lord than.

Somalia: Mr Geddi and the winding road ahead Wed. May 18, 2005 11:18 am. Somali PM After a weeklong visit to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Somali Prime Minister Mr. Ali Mohamed Geddi came back to Nairobi, his government’s temporary headquarters. Mr. Geddi, a former veterinary professor has very hard and complicated work ahead of him. One third of parliament members left for Mogadishu without consulting him. Mogadishu warlords refused to accept African troops. Baydabo, one of the two cities he and the president planned to use until the capital is secured fell into the hands of their opposition last month. Despite of all of this and many other problems like financial shortcomings and corrupt politicians, Mr. Geddi is determined to turn Somalia around. However, many people do not take him serious since he is not one of the warlords and doesn’t have militia and heavy weapons. The PM says all Somalis would love to see Somalia liberated from the handful of warlords who control all aspects of everybody’s life. His agenda is to isolate them by gaining public trust. He says the warlords who crippled Somalia will not continue their dominance if the little boys they use are given a better alternative. One of his soft rivals is the Speaker of the House, Mr. Sharif Hassan Adan who allegedly sided with Mogadishu warlords for political and other reasons we decided not to publish. Mr. Geddi’s hope to make Somalia a habitable and safe place depends largely on world community and the success of the African troops. No matter how much public support he is enjoying now, use of force is necessary in order to accomplish some of the tasks ahead. Few individuals made fortunes from the absence of government and will do whatever it takes to bring down anyone who tries to establish one. For instance, there are over sixty roadblocks where armed men extort money from drivers and passengers in Mogadishu alone. A Somali website (midnimo.com) published the ownership of these roadblocks a couple of months ago. According to midnimo.com most of them belong to well-known warlords who are now campaigning to bring the new government down. These same men are now beating the patriotic drum and saying we don’t want Mr. Geddi because he is going to bring foreign forces into the country. The prime minister argues the armed men who oppose him have no vision except make fortunes at the expense of the general public. He says his govenment will open an office in the heart of Mogadishu and nobody can stop him from coming to the city. He hails from Mogadishu area native ****** tribe and has good support among his clansmen. News Category: Somalia

wed. May 18, 2005 Wardigley district in Mogadishu was a scene of chaos today after land dispute turned into street gun battle. Two opposing groups used heavy weaponry and some casualties have been reported. The land dispute is between a religious cult leader and the children of the founder who children claim their father used his own land when he started the cult. The leader argues the real estate belongs to the cult, not their father who passed away and left the mansion for his followers. The stakes are higher now because loss of lives and property in today’s fight. One stray RGP (rocket propelled grenade) or some sort of missile hit a nearby building owned by a telecommunications company which resulted phone service disruptions in the area. Mogadishu is controlled by various armed militias who intervene in armed confrontations. Source: SomaliNet, May 18, 2005 Xildhibaanada Muqdisho jooga 1- Hon. Jaamac Cali Jaamac 2- Hon. Ugandan Minister of Defense Mr. Amama Mbabazi met with Sudan President Mr. Omer Al-Bashir and Minister of Defense Major General Bakri Hassan Salih today in Khartoum. They talked about the nations’ troop deployment in Somalia among other things. Today’s meeting included normalizing relationship between the nations. Sudan and Uganda are sending one battalion each to Somalia in the coming days. Other African nations will take part in logistics and transportation of troops and equipment. These soldiers will help the new government relocate to Somalia from Nairobi, Kenya where it is temporarily located now. Sudan and Uganda share a long border and often accuse each other of arming and training rebels. Mr. Amama’s visit to Sudan who was carrying a warm and conciliatory message from Ugandan president reiterates the two nations willing to work together. In other development, Somali president, Mr. Abdulahi Yussuf Ahmed flew to London last night for health reasons. Very close source said the president is not sick and this trip was planned a long time ago. He visits the UK for regular check-ups. Somali Parliament Speaker Mr. Sharif Hassan Adan left Nairobi for Mogadishu yesterday in protest after the last parliament session was held in his absence. He accused the administration of abusing constitutional powers. The president and the prime minister allege Mr. Adan is the one who’s trying to derail Somalia’s reconciliation process.

Somalia: Mogadishu faction leaders vow to fight African troops Sun. May 15, 2005 12:32 am. One of Mogadishu faction leaders, Mr. Mohamed Farah Qanyare said they will fight Ugandan and Sudan troops if they come to Somalia to protect the interest of the new government. That message and his unhappiness with the prime minister and the president were the central theme of his speech when he addressed a large audience in Mogadishu soccer stadium today. Mr. Afrah and other Mogadishu armed faction leaders brought their weapons and militias to the stadium today, flexing their muscles and promising to secure the capital. He and other Mogadishu warlords hold senior positions in the new government they publicly oppose. Also today, Mogadishu based religious leader, Mr. Hassan Dahir Aweys asked all Somalis to fight foreign troops if they set feet on Somali soil saying their ultimate mission is to subdue Somalia and its people for Ethiopia’s domination. Somalia: Mogadishu militia leaders display their powers Sat. May 14, 2005 10:16 am. Eighty-five fighting vehicles known as technical in Somalia were displayed in Mogadishu soccer stadium today. Speakers at the scene said they took this step of unifying their forces in a bit to secure the capital. This public display attracted many spectators and it is the first of its kind in Mogadishu history. Mr. Ahmed Dirie, the spokesman for Somali government and parliament members in Mogadishu, told SomaliNet most of these armed vehicles will be taken to a military base outside of the city. “The rest will be used for security purposes.†He said. The leaders who brought their militias and weapons to the stadium in a show of unity are the ones who divided the capital into many small enclaves for the past fifteen years. They are now on the same side of the Somalia’s power struggle and want their and fighters integrated into the future national army.

Somalia will receive African troops Thu. May 12, 2005 08:37 pm. Mr. Abdulahi Yusuf Ahmed, the new interim president and the prime minister, Mr. Ali Ahmed Geddi are in celebratory mood tonight after getting what they wanted from the African Union (AU) earlier in the day. These men’s administration will be installed in Somalia by the AU, Somalia’s new surrogate mother. After a dozen or so failed national reconciliation attempts, the AU is going to disarm Somalia and muscle warlords who refuse to dismantle their militias. Unlike the humanitarian UNISOM mission in early 1990s, this one will involve in the disarmament process. Troops from Sudan and Uganda will be deployed in Mogadishu and surrounding area very soon and Mr. Geddi promised to relocate his government from Nairobi, Kenya to Somalia no later than the end of the month. The ball is rolling for these two men and their cabinet, at least for now. However, it is not known how Mogadishu warlords who declared war on foreign troops will react to this new development. Somali PM visits Ethiopia for talks with AU and IGAD Thu. May 12, 2005 08:31 am. Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Geddi left Nairobi today for talks with African Union (AU) East African Nations (IGAD) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. AU’s preparation for Somalia mission is in its final stages and Mr. Geddi will present his parliament’s decision to accept African troop deployment in Somalia at the meeting. Mr. Geddi and his new national government want to get as many African troops as possible but few militia leaders vowed to fight if foreign troops come to Somalia. African leaders are balancing the need for their troops in Somalia and the opposition they may face on the ground. If a large number of Somalis do not want African troops, AU may face stiff resistance and possible uprising. Somali parliament approved African troops in their yesterday’s session in Nairobi, Kenya where the government is temporarily located. News Category: Somalia
