Viking, I wasn't making any deductions because it is a well known and accepted fact that right hand possessions are slave women who were mostly acquired through war booty and it was permissible for men to have relations with them. Khumus is one-fifth of war booty given in Allah's cause etc. (Quran 8:41) for those who don't know. The only part of the hadith that is relevant for this discussion is the highlighted portion. Volume 5, Book 59, Number 637: Narrated Buraida: The Prophet sent 'Ali to Khalid to bring the Khumus (of the booty) and I hated Ali, and 'Ali had taken a bath (after a sexual act with a slave-girl from the Khumus). I said to Khalid, "Don't you see this (i.e. Ali)?" When we reached the Prophet I mentioned that to him. He said, "O Buraida! Do you hate Ali?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Do you hate him, for he deserves more than that from the Khumlus."

Moving on from the prophet(saw), the dowry is a right and an entitlement that every woman has when entering into a marriage contract and it can only be waived by her will. Since right hand possessions are supposedly 'wives' who weren't paid dowries clearly shows that they didn't enjoy the same rights other free women did. This is because they were concubines or more appropriately slave women. Sheikh Nur should shed light on this matter.

Historically during the dawn of Islam it was customary for people to have slaves and part of the deal was that Islam would abolish this practice eventually, that is why a lot reward was attached to manimutting slaves (evidence is from the hadith, some of you don't believe in it). But the issue here is as Honesita said back in the day men could have relations with their slave women without having to marry them. Of course this doesn't apply today. That is why there is a difference between 'wives' and 'right-hand possessions' in the quranic verse; the right hand possessions are the slave women.
