Mr. Yusuf said he only heard the news from local radios. "America has the right to hunt down and air bombard wherever those who were responsible for bombing its embassies in East Africa are staying or hiding," he stressed. waa xoolo, xitaa lama soo ogeysiin in waddankiisa qayb ka mid ah la soo weerarayo, how insignificant he is. They will tell him to step down from the so-called presidency on the local radio again, when they (the US) acheive what they call their target, which you never know might be soon.

7 Jan 7, 2007, 19:23 MOGADISHU, Somalia Jan 7 (Garowe Online) - A religious Somali man was forcibly taken out of his Mogadishu home Sunday by masked gunmen, according to his wife. The incident happened in Ifka Halane area of Mogadishu, which was a former stronghold of the defeated Islamist movement. The man was later found dead with gunshot wounds. His wife said he was not killed for clan reasons, but that he was "targeted" for his religious beliefs and his support for then-ruling Islamist forces. Its the first time such a murder happened in Mogadishu since allied Somali and Ethiopian troops took over the capital. Residents worry the murder could begin a series of revenge killings aimed at supporters of the Islamists. With their takeover of Mogadishu, Somali and Ethiopian forces have returned the Islamists' arch-enemies, Mogadishu's ex-warlords who are said to be rearming their militias in different parts of town.

Somalia's endless struggle for peace By Peter Biles BBC News When Somalia's president was overthrown in 1991, much of the country fell under the control of warlords and clan-based factions. Sixteen years later, and with the backing of Ethiopian troops, the current interim administration is the 14th attempt to try to bring stability to the country. The interim government relies heavily on military support Mogadishu International Airport has not been used much over the last 10 years, but let us just imagine what it is like, flying in. The plane approaches from the south, descending quickly over the Indian Ocean. The end of the runway juts out towards the sea, and it is hard to get a glimpse of much more than the large red sand dunes and the turquoise-coloured water breaking on the rocks. At first glance, it can look like a tropical paradise. But Mogadishu has never been for the faint-hearted. Since 1991, when an ageing dictator by the name of General Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown, Somalia has been one of the most dangerous places on earth. A few months after Siad Barre fled, I was in Mogadishu talking to a friend, a Somali doctor, Hussein Mursal, who worked for a British relief agency. Clan fighting had broken out in the city. Members of Mursal's own family had been shot and wounded at one stage when looters came to the house to pillage. I asked Mursal how long he thought the conflict might last. Would it be weeks or months ? "Oh no," he said..."they're going to be locked into this for years to come." He was right of course. Militia retreat This past fortnight, I have thought a lot about Somalia, as the news has filtered out. First, the confirmation that Ethiopian troops were inside the country, in support of Somalia's fledgling transitional government. Then the announcement that the Union of Islamic Courts and its militia had abandoned Mogadishu with even more haste than Siad Barre did 16 years ago this month. This could be the end of the Islamists, or more ominously, it could herald the start of a Taleban-style guerrilla war These past few days, the Islamists have been on the run, boxed in against the Kenyan border in the south, pursued by the Ethiopians with their tanks and airpower, blocked by an American warship offshore, and probably monitored from above, by American satellites. This could be the end of the Islamists, or more ominously, it could herald the start of a Taleban-style guerrilla war. Crushing dissent Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi: Darling of the West It has become a cliche to say that "the troubles in Somalia threaten to spill over into the rest of the Horn of Africa", but Ethiopia has quietly meddled in Somalia for years, and now the visible presence of the Ethiopians is both provocative and dangerous. Foreign forces are not welcome. The Ethiopians know this, but they are also deeply fearful of an Islamist threat from within Somalia, and are determined to crush it. And so far, the Ethiopians are pretty pleased with themselves. The Ethiopians are trying to fill the power vacuum in Mogadishu As a darling of the West, Ethiopia's Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has been able to get away with brutally putting down internal dissent in his own country, and now moving thousands of troops into Somalia. A warmonger he may be, but Mr Meles is on the side of President Bush and Tony Blair in the "war on terror", and he is the most important leader in a rough neighbourhood. So the Ethiopians are trying to fill the power vacuum in Mogadishu, for while the Somali government has international recognition, it has little power. Warlords rise again Somalia's warlords will no doubt see this as a new window of opportunity for they have not gone away. In fact, some of them are members of the transitional government, including Hussein Aidid. The US unsuccessfully tried to capture Hussein Aidid's father He came to Somalia as an American Marine in 1993. When the Americans left after the ill-fated "Black Hawk Down" episode in which 18 US soldiers were killed after the downing of two American helicopters, Hussein Aidid stayed on, and became a powerful faction leader. It was his father, the late General Mohamed Farah Aidid who controlled large parts of Mogadishu in the early 1990s and whom the United States tried, in vain, to capture. Rocket fire I met General Aidid when he was at the height of his power. I always found him a little deranged and out of touch with reality. But he was certainly a man to be feared. I remember walking across the road one afternoon from the house where I was staying. Just as you might lean across the garden fence to talk to your neighbour, I wandered into the driveway opposite for a chat with some of Aidid's fighters. What strikes me most about the recent events in Somalia is how little anything has changed Astonishingly, they were busy welding a missile pod from a MiG fighter jet on to the back of a jeep, one of the so-called "technicals". Within minutes, they had loaded it with rockets, and test-fired a couple of them which fizzed over the nearby rooftops and disappeared out to sea. I mention all this because what strikes me most about the recent events in Somalia is how little anything has changed. In 1991, hopes of a brighter future faded quicker than the slogans that were daubed on the streets to celebrate the overthrow of the old dictatorship. Now, as then, Somalia is starting from scratch. Somalia's Islamists vow to heed al-Qaida By ELIZABETH A. KENNEDY Associated Press Writer © 2007 The Associated Press TOOLS Email Get section feed Print Subscribe NOW RESOURCES The deputy leader of al-Qaida, Ayman al-Zawahri (AY'-muhn ahl-ZWAH'-ree), calls on the 'Muslim nati Ayman al-Zawahri (AY'-muhn ahl-ZWAH'-ree), al-Qaida's deputy leader, speaking Arabic in message posted on Internet. The deputy leader of al-Qaida, Ayman al-Zawahri (AY'-muhn ahl-ZWAH'-ree), calls on the 'Muslim nation in Somalia' to stay in the Video Report MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Somali government on Saturday said it was indefinitely postponing a mandatory disarmament program, while Islamic fighters hiding in Mogadishu said they will heed an al-Qaida call for guerrilla attacks and suicide bombings against Ethiopian troops. Abdirahman Dinari, spokesman for Somalia's transitional government, told The Associated Press that the prime minister "has decided to postpone disarming people by force until an unspecified time." Thursday had been the deadline for residents to voluntarily give up their arms. Dozens of residents burned tires and looted vehicles Saturday to protest the plans to forcibly disarm them, shouting "Down, down with Ethiopia," in reference to troops from the neighboring country that have been instrumental in routing an Islamic militia from much of southern Somalia. Meanwhile, Islamic fighters in hiding said they would heed a call from Ayman al-Zawahri, al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden's deputy, for guerrilla attacks and suicide bombings against Ethiopian troops whose intervention was key to the Islamists' defeat. "I am committed to die for the sake of my religion and the al-Qaida deputy's speech only encourages me to go ahead with my holy war," 18-year-old Sahal Abdi in Mogadishu told The Associated Press. In a message aired Friday on a Web site frequently used by militants, al-Zawahri urged the Islamic movement's fighters and other Muslims to attack the troops of Christian-dominated Ethiopia, which he called a "crusader" invasion force. "Launch ambushes, land mines, raids and suicidal combats until you consume them as the lions and eat their prey," al-Zawahri said. Ethiopian soldiers, tanks and warplanes intervened in Somalia on Dec. 24 to defeat an Islamic movement that threatened to overthrow the internationally recognized government, which at the time controlled only the western town of Baidoa. But Ethiopia's government wants to pull out in a few weeks, saying its forces cannot be peacekeepers and it cannot afford for them to stay. Somalia is trying to train its own military and police while the plan for an international force is put in place. The Islamic movement has vowed to launch an Iraq-style guerrilla war, raising the prospect of bloody reprisals against foreign peacekeepers. Somalia's interior minister said Thursday that 3,500 Islamic fighters were still hiding in the capital, Mogadishu. Kenya closed its border amid fears militants would slip across the frontier. The United Nations said thousands of refugees were also near the border, unable to seek safety in Kenya. A meeting of U.S., European Union, African and Arab diplomats ended in Kenya on Friday with a U.S. pledge to provide $40 million to Somalia in political, humanitarian and peacekeeping assistance, and a plan to ask more African nations to send troops to help stabilize the country. Uganda has pledged at least 1,000 peacekeepers. The EU said it also would help pay for a peacekeeping force envisioned at 8,000 soldiers. On Friday, U.S. warships patrolled offshore to prevent militiamen from escaping by sea. The U.S. 5th Fleet said vessels were being boarded to look for militants, including three al-Qaida suspects wanted for the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in East Africa. The Islamic council has denied U.S. allegations that the three were leaders in the Somali movement. ___ Associated Press writers Elizabeth A. Kennedy in Mogadishu and Chris Tomlinson in Nairobi, Kenya, contributed to this report.

Sxb ….Baashi I think it is not up to you, me and our SOL colleagues to prevent Somalia becoming like Iraq and Afghanistan but the majority of this responsibility lies with the so-called TFG officials whom most of their interviews and comments are rarely positive let alone that they something positive for Somalia. I agree with the 5 suggestions you brought forward and believe that could be the start of new beginning for Somalia but we already see the puppet government speeding towards the opposite direction. Therefore don’t you think it is too late? Waxaan aaminsanahay in dastuurkii lagu diyaarshey Shirkii Mbagathi uusan sheegayn in jagooyin aan macne lahayn la kala boobo oo la iska magacaabo, waxaase dhabtu tahay inuu gundhig u yahay qorshaha looga gollahaane uu ahaa DIB-U-HESHIISIIN haddane waxaan aragnaa in hoggaamiye ku sheegyada lagu soo doortay Kenya ayba indho-adaygooda ay keeneen in musuqmaasuq aan la malaysan karin iyadoo ay Soomaali ka soo daashay ay hadda la yimaadeen. Bal dib ugu noqo, shakhsiyaad badan oo Geeddi iyo C/llaahi Jagooyin u magacaabeen waxaadna ogaan doontaa inay inta badan gebi ahaanba hareereeyeen eex, qabiil, shaqsiyaad aan lahayn aqoon ayna ka dheertahay karti iyo hufnaan iyo weliba kuwo dalka hore dembi uga galay mid xagga musuqmaasuqa ay iyo mid gummaad ahba. Indeed…Taliban....I couldn’t agree with Hiiraan more sxb………………I haven't met any Somali regardless of their clan or political view (you know many Somalis and their clan driven political views towards Somalia) who says anything negative about Sh. Sharif, a true leader and Somali. She Sharif is on the top of the list of Somalis who would definitely get my vote for leading Somalia. Brothers and sisters we know many good Somalis were killed in the unfortunate civil war over the years. Many people who would have done a great job for Somalia Ilaahay kulligood ha u naxariistee, let us for once save the remaining please. The calm, positive and wonderful leader, Ilaahoow Sh. Sharif iyo inta la midka ahba Soomaali u xafid.

Bloggers fear Somali insurgency Members of the international blogging community have given their reaction to the role of Ethiopian troops in Somalia where Islamic militias have been defeated. "'The air raids have begun, the air raids have begun. Ethiopia has entered Somalia.' My mother kept repeating the words hardly able to believe it herself... Words I never thought I'd hear. Words that made my heart race and my blood boil. I cannot think straight." That was the scene in the Canadian-Somali household of blogger Muslimah as Ethiopian and Somali government troops launched a devastating assault on Islamist forces in Somalia, pushing them out of stronghold after stronghold by sheer force of arms. What has Prime Minister Meles Zenawi gotten the soldiers of the Ethiopian defence forces into with his irresponsible and aggressive foray in Somalia? Ewenet Means Truth in Ethiopia While Muslimah's mother sat stuttering out her shock in Canada, scores of other Somali bloggers around the world rushed to their keyboards to type out their reaction to the fighting. Many of them were just as astounded by the news. "The world has officially gone mad, the Muslim world that is... Somalis are turning on each other again. Was it not bad enough when we simply slaughtered each other the first time?" wrote NM of the blog Muslim, Female & Black. After the surprise came the analysis. Very little of it was upbeat. "The fear is that this war is gonna become a full out war that affects the neighbouring countries to Somalia," wrote Native Female. "It was a ****** move to have Ethiopia involved in this. Somalis are sensitive where Ethiopia is concerned. They are a sore wound where Somalia is concerned. Having them support the interim government means rubbing salt on the wound causing most to turn against the government." Others were deeply suspicious of Ethiopia's motives in supporting the troops of the Transitional Federal Government. Shafi of the blog Incoherent Thoughts titled his post "Mogadishu Bloodbath" and asked: "How long do we have to wait for more Ethiopian troops to settle in Somalia? And how long before they decide to move up towards other Somali cities? My heart aches for Somalia. And though the world ignores its plight, again Mogadishu will carry the burden on its shoulders and bury its dead with streets coagulated with blood!" Ethiopia's victory may have been surprisingly swift. But that was little comfort for the country's own band of bloggers. On balance, I'd still rate the most likely outcome as a sham Ethiopian withdrawal followed by an extended counterinsurgent conflict. Head Heeb Zenobia of the blog Ewenet Means Truth in Ethiopia was one of many to raise the spectre of an Islamic insurgency that could keep her country's soldiers stuck in Somalia for many months to come: "What has Prime Minister Meles Zenawi gotten the soldiers of the Ethiopian defence forces into with his irresponsible and aggressive foray in Somalia? Are they going to be facing an insurgency similar to the type in Iraq as some Somali pundits are suggesting?" Crigler-Somalia was thinking along the same lines: "A return to the feudal anarchy of nine months ago and a failure of the TFG (Somalia's Transitional Federal Government) to get its act together and impose order could very well result in rekindling the Islamist movement - probably more radical than ever - as an alternative to secularist bumbling. Somalis really want an end to anarchy." The Head Heeb summed up everyone's doom-laden thoughts in his post "Somalia: the third phase": "On balance, I'd still rate the most likely outcome as a sham Ethiopian withdrawal followed by an extended counterinsurgent conflict, with the TFG remaining ineffectual and internally divided while the Islamist militias wage a guerrilla struggle with substantial public support... Somalia deserves better, but there are too many forces converging toward the opposite to provide much room for optimism."
