Network)-Somalia’s Prime Minister, Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke, has pledged Sunday peace and reconciliation, after being sworn as Somali premier. Speaking to BBC Network Africa, the prime minister said he would rebuild the nation and bring home back the Somali refugees in abroad and the displaced people outside the capital Mogadishu. The Somali parliament has Saturday overwhelmingly endorsed the nomination of the new Prime Minister Abdirashid Ali Sharmrke in Djibouti. He told before the parliament yesterday that he would form a small cabinet. The prime minister promised he would bring home the Somali refugees in Kenya and said he would to talk to any group to solve the Somali crises through dialogue. The new premier, the son of a former president but a relative newcomer to Somalia's political scene, will face the daunting task of forming an inclusive government and restoring stability to Somalia. Sharmarke, 48, has worked with the United Nations in Sudan and Sierra Leone, holds Canadian citizenship and obtained degrees in political science and political economy from Carleton University in Ottawa.

Hiiraan Online Saturday, February 14, 2009 Mogadishu residents showed their support for the nomination of Somalia’s new PM in a demonstration organized by the city’s administration. The demonstrators who were estimated to number in the thousands marched in the streets of Mogadishu before assembling at the city hall where they were addressed by the Governor of Benadir region Mr. Mohamed Osman Ali Dhagahtuur and his deputy Mr. Abdifatah Ibraahim Sabriye Shaawey. The Governor told the crowd that they congratulate the new PM as well as the President for a “courageous” and wise decision. “I believe the new PM will be able to form a government that solves that country’s problems because he is young and educated man as well as being the son of a former PM” said the Governor who added that they will welcome the new PM to Mogadishu. The demonstrators chanted slogans supporting the new federal government and asked the new government to address the many challenges the country faces. The chairman of Islamic scholars for reconciliation also welcomed the election of the new PM and said he is satisfied with the first speech the new PM gave after his nomination.
