  6. Canadian Authorities Expect More Arrests By ANTHONY DePALMA Published: June 5, 2006 TORONTO, June 5 — Canadian authorities said today they expected to make more arrests in what they have described as a broad terrorist plot to acquire materials for homemade bombs. In an interview today with the Canadian Broadcast Corportion, Mike McDonnell, assistant commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, was asked whether arrest were expected in the near future. "I believe so," he said, adding: "We will be following every investigative lead we have to its conclusion. Anybody who aided, facilitated or participated in this terrorist event will be arrested and brought to the courts." Most of the 17 men and youths arrested over the weekend in a large counter-terrorism sweep are scheduled to appear Tuesday morning in an Ontario courtroom for preliminary bail hearings. The specific charges against them are expected to be detailed for the first time. At least 6 of the 17 people in the counterterrorism operation over the weekend regularly attended the same storefront mosque in this middle-class Toronto suburb of modest brick rental townhouses and well-kept lawns, fellow worshipers said Sunday. Their attendance at the mosque, Al-Rahman Islamic Centre for Islamic Education, is one of the few public pieces of information that clearly link any of the suspects — 12 adults and 5 youths — in one of the biggest antiterrorism arrests in North America since the Sept. 11 attacks. Members at a mosque prayer meeting on Sunday said the six fellow worshipers who were arrested included the eldest, Qayyum Abdul Jamal, 43, described by several acquaintances as a school bus driver and an active member of the mosque who frequently led prayers, made fiery speeches and influenced young people who attended the services. "He spent a lot of time with youth," said Faheem Bukhari, a director of the Mississauga Muslim Community Center who sometimes attended prayers at the mosque. "He'd take them for soccer or bowling, and talk to them." Mr. Bukhari said Mr. Jamal never openly embraced violence or talked about Al Qaeda, but was "very vocal and I believe could incite these young kids for jihad." 8. Bin Laden: The latest action in Moscow is only a response to what is happening to all Muslim brothers around the world.... Our people in Palestine are being killed, are being subjected to the worst kind of suffering for almost a century now... If we defend our people in Palestine the world is disturbed and allied against Muslims under the banner of combating terrorism... This is in response to what is happening to our brothers in Palestine who are being killed every day. So we are issuing a warning to citizens of countries allied with the United States. -Nov 2002 As evinced by Bin Laden excerpts above, Canada is in clear and present danger from Bin Laden group or ideologically affiliated groups. Not cooked up bogeymen to bring around waning public support for foriegn military excursions. The wheels of justice are in motion, let justice run it's course. At least they won't get their heads slowly sawn off or summarily excuted.

  10. Castro, Your visceral mistrust of Western governments and their motives is noted but it lacks due perspective. Matter of fact is if it wasn't for these deranged muslims (who represent only a tiny minority of world muslims) hellbent on achieving celestial poontang by indiscriminately massacring civilians, Western governments wouldn't muster the political capital to sell their War on Terror. There'd be no War on Terrorism. We're not talking about hypotheticals here, there is ample evidence forewarning us of what these misguided muslims are intent on doing. Bali, Egypt, Turkey, Madrid, London, Beslan etc etc. It is only the bravura of Western counter terrorism and intelligence agencies that we see less of the aforementioned atrocities. You gotta take stand here Castro. Do you disagree with violent Islamic extremists? If so, then declare it unequivocally. Otherwise, by being unambiguous or by seeming prevaricating, you leave Westerners little choice but to lump all muslims together as potential enemies.

  13. 17 terror suspects arrested in Toronto By BETH DUFF-BROWN, Associated Press Writer 39 minutes ago TORONTO - Seventeen Canadian residents were in custody Saturday on terrorism-related charges, including plots to use explosives in attacks on Canadian soil, authorities said. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they arrested 12 male adults and five youth and foiled plans for terrorist attacks against targets in southern Ontario. Officials showed evidence of bomb making materials, a computer hard drive, camouflage uniforms and what appears to be a door with bullet holes in it at a news conference Saturday morning. "This group took steps to acquire three tons of ammonium nitrate and other components necessary to create explosive devices," said assistant Royal Canadian Mounted Police commissioner Mike McDonell said. McDonell said that is three times the amount used to blow up the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The arrests were made Friday, with some 400 officers involved. McDonell said the suspects were either citizens or residents of Canada and had trained together. "The men arrested yesterday are Canadian residents from a variety of backgrounds. For various reasons they appeared to have become adherents of a violent ideology inspired by al-Qaida," said Luc Portelance, the assistant director of operations with CSIS — Canada's spy agency. Heavily armed police officers ringed the Durham Regional Police Station in the city of Pickering, just east of Toronto, as the suspects were brought in late Friday night in unmarked cars which were drove into an underground garage. The Toronto Star reported Saturday that Canadian youths in their teens and 20s, upset at the treatment of Muslims worldwide, were among those arrested. The newspaper said they had trained at a camp north of Toronto and had plotted to attack CSIS's downtown office near the CN Tower, among other targets. Melisa Leclerc, a spokeswoman for the federal Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day, had no comment on the arrests. In March 2004, Ottawa software developer Mohammad Momin Khawaja became the first Canadian charged under the country's Anti-Terrorism Act for alleged activities in Ottawa and London. Khawaja was also named, but not charged, in British for playing a role in a foiled bomb plot. He is being held in an Ottawa detention center, awaiting trial. The Canadian anti-terrorism law was passed swiftly following the Sept. 11 assaults, particularly after Osama bin-Laden's named Canada one of five so-called Christian nations that should be targeted for acts of terror. The others, reaffirmed in 2004 by his al-Qaida network, were the United States, Britain, Spain and Australian, all of which have been victims of terrorist attacks. The anti-terrorism law permits the government to brand individuals and organizations as terrorists and gives police the power to make preventive arrests of people suspected of planning a terrorist attack. Though many view Canada as an unassuming neutral nation that has skirted terrorist attacks, it has suffered its share of aggression, including the 1985 Air India bombing, in which 329 people were killed, most of them Canadian citizens. Intelligence officials believe at least 50 terror groups now have some presence in the North American nation and have long complained that the country's immigration laws and border security are too weak to weed out potential terrorists. source
