Today is the twentieth anniversary of the day when, in the wake of the collapse of the Somali state, clan elders in the onetime British Protectorate of Somaliland proclaimed their sovereignty. In the two decades since, while the rest of the country became the exemplar par excellence of a failed state, one best known today for maritime piracy and a brutal Islamist, Somalilanders have more or less succeeded in building for themselves a viable polity, albeit one lacking international recognition, due to the resistance of other African countries to secessionism. Left to their own devices, Somalilanders nonetheless drafted a constitution which provided for an executive branch consisting of a directly elected president and vice president and appointed ministers; a bicameral legislature consisting of an elected House of Representatives and an upper chamber of elders, the guurti; and an independent judiciary. The most recent elections, the internationally-monitored presidential poll in June 2010, resulted in the defeat of incumbent Dahir Riyale Kahin, the election of Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud (popularly known as “Silanyo”), and a smooth transition between the two—an unheard of occurrence in the region. Despite its largely successful record and notwithstanding that a 2005 report of a African Union fact-finding mission which concluded that “the fact that the union between Somaliland and Somalia was never ratified and also malfunctioned when it went into action from 1960 to 1990, makes Somaliland’s search for recognition historically unique and self-justified in African political history” and recommended that “the AU should find a special method of dealing with this outstanding case,” no country has yet recognized Somaliland’s bid for independence. This apparent snub, while grating to Somalilanders, has not prevented them from building a vibrant polity with a lively civil society. *Ibtisam;722334 wrote: Okay you cannot let the past go, then creating a past for these people distinct from yours will haunt you later, agreed? Of course it will be a past for them but as I said it will end with a mutual agreement. Such fightings happened in Burco, Hargeisa and other towns as well but with such negotiations it ended peacefully. This will take the same path. Forget Somalia as whole now; the SSC, I mean sit with the people not the oldies or the sell outs, sit with the people, all their representatives and hear them out, hearing out the few that come with you is not enough, hearing out the ones who oppose you is difficult but needs to be done. YOu are just chasing them around haada. What do u mean by the people ?? ,,,, Somaliland was created by the people including those in Sool as they were the main actors. As i said, there are diplomatic talks going on right now and I don't wana say more about it. Not at the moment. Okay progress of things are in the pipe line hence why the fighting stopped I get that, but can a long term solution be found rather then cease fires that randomly pick off where they left off after a while. Can something other than appealing to their hungry /bribe with money/ positions be done?? Otherwise tomorrow when the position shifts or the money is increased by someone else, they will buy from else where. Can you marginalized the money motivated ones and deal with peace/ progress motivated ones? and who talked about money and bribing except Liibaan and Co. ?? ..... can a whole community in Widhwidh be bribed ??? ,,, it is a cover of the failure of their bloodshed project. This is part of the success of the diplomatic talking I was just talking about ...... Winning the hearts & minds of the people as u said is the main important at the moment. The issue of the secession is something that can also be discussed.

SOMALILAND: Government Terminates TOTAL Oil license Agreement

HARGEISA (SomalilandPress)–According a press release from the office of the presidency, Somaliland government has suspended the license of the French foreign company Total Oil’s management of Berbera port’s oil storage facilities. This news came in the form of a press release from the office of the presidency signed by the present’s spokesman Mr. Abdullahi Mohamed Dahir (Cukuse) in which it details the termination of TOTAL’s license in Somaliland. It was roughly eleven years ago when former president Mohamed Ibrahim Egal gave TOTAL Oil which at that time was called Total Red Sea full control of Berbera port’s fuel storage and import of fuel into the country. Ever since that day majority of Somalilanders were not happy with the form that was in which TOTAL Oil was awarded that contract. Total has had monopoly on the oil business in Somaliland for the past eleven years and today’s announcement that the French firm will no longer be managing the fuel storages facilities has been welcomed as pleasant news. President Ahmed Mohamud (Siilaanyo) has appointed several ministers from his cabinet who will be managing the day to day operation of the fuel storage facilities until a permanent company is rewarded with the contract. An open bid auction is expected to take place before any firm is awarded this time around given that this contract is seen as lucrative contract because whoever wins will be managing the country’s only fuel storage facilities and the license to import oil into the country. SomalilandPress was able to optain a copy of the original contract that Total signed with former president Mohamed Ibrahim Egal.

The Zack;722152 wrote: Jb, you claimed that SL is doing something right and is talking to the proper parties, well that is good step sir but the most important side that SL needs to negotiate with is ssc and we don't see that going on. We see a war being waged against them and we all see more hatred in the making between the two people/entities. Don't you think that more energy should be focused on to these people? Instead of embracing what few dabaqoodhis like Xaaabsade do? It is going on sxb .... it is not just out of the air yet but there is a massive diplomatic talks going on. Why else do u think there is no war happening ?? The Gogosha Nabadda is still open and it is expected to start anytime this year Insha Allah.
