  2. FULL STORY In the small hilly Indian state of Meghalaya, a matrilineal system operates with property names and wealth passing from mother to daughter rather than father to son - but some men are campaigning for change. When early European settlers first arrived here they nicknamed it "the Scotland of the East" on account of its evocative rolling hills. Coincidentally, today the bustling market in the state capital, Shillong, is awash with tartan in the form of the traditional handloom shawls worn ubiquitously since the autumn chill arrived. Not far from here the village of Cherrapunji once measured an astonishing 26.5m (87ft) of rain in one year, a fact still acknowledged by the Guinness book as a world record. But the rainy season is over for the time being and it is Meghalaya's other major claim to fame that I am here to investigate.

  6. HARGEISA, (Somalilandsun) Somaliland’s main political parties are unanimous in their opposition against the secession sentiments coming out of the Khatuumo 2 tribal meeting in Taleeh. In a joint press conference held at the Somaliland presidency kulmiye, UDUB and UCID political parties denounced the recent declaration of a tribal state dubbed Khatuumo land (Darwishland) by the clan meeting in Taleeh. Three parties revealed their support for the women fronted demonstrations against the Taleeh secessionists, urging all their supporters and Somalilanders at-large to participate in large numbers. The demonstrations will not only protest against the Khatuumo meeting declaration but support the activities of the National army in Buhodle town against militias aligned to the Khatuumoists. The Chairman of the ruling party Kulmiye Mr. Musa Bihi said that the sovereignty and cohesiveness of Somaliland was non-negotiable “The Khatuumo declaration on separation from Somaliland is treason and those responsible are enemies of the country, and should be dealt with accordingly” Said Musa Bihi. The ruling party boss stressed that it was the responsibility of the government to protect it people and territory and thus not allow some elements original from Sool region but currently in the Diaspora to disturb the prevailing and hard won national security. The main opposition party of UDUB said that it is firmly in accord and will firmly support all decisions made by the government to deter the fragmentation of the country. The action secretary general of UDUB Mr. Ahmed Ismail “Keyse” said that anti-somaliland elements under the pay of terrorists will not be allowed to interfere with national cohesiveness. “UDUB is determined to ensure the stability of the country thus will not oppose government action as pertains to dealing with the Khatuumoists” said the UDUB SG. He urged all party members to come out in large numbers for the planned anti-Khatuumo demonstrations to be held nationwide on Sunday the 22nd January. At the same joint press conference Mr. Feisal Ali Warabe the UCID political party boss said that it is a culture for political parties to unite during a time of national crisis.“The Khatuumo declaration is such a crisis and we are united in the purpose of ensuring national peace” said the UCID boss. The UCID party boss accused the Khatuumoists of being treacherous people who have overseen the fragmentation of South Somalia where they held senior posts until they were chased away. The planned demonstrations to be held on Sunday the 22nd January 2012 in all major cities of the country is organized bvy Somaliland women who met recently at the civil service institute to show their distaste for the Khatuumoists and support for ongoing national army operations in Buhodle town to flush out militias aligned to the secessionists. The unanimity of the three political parties, ruling and opposition is a reflection of the entire country’s united decision on ensuring that prevalent security and peaceful co-existence in Somaliland is maintained all costs notwithstanding. Meanwhile President Silanyo has dispatched high level government delegations to the Easter regions of the country where the Khatuumoists claim support. To Sanaag region the president sent the minister of Defence Mr. Abdirahman Adami accompanied by minister of aviation Mr. Mahmoud Abdi Hashi and deputy minister of finance Mr. Warsame Said. The livestock minister Dr Abdi Aw Dahir, MP Ali ******* and MP Mohamed Yusuf Wabeeye have been dispatched to Toghdeer region while Information minister Ahmed Abdi Habsade and business tycoon Mr. Abdirizaq Khalif have been dispatched to Sool region home to the Khatuumoists.

  8. MOGADISHU — A foreigner has been kidnapped in a semi-autonomous province of central Somalia, a local official said Saturday. "We have reports that a foreigner has been abducted from Galmudug," security official Ali Abdulrahman said, adding that he had been on the airport road near the town of Galkayo and was believed to be in the employ of the local government. "He was in a car when two pickup trucks full of gunmen stopped the vehicle and took him away," Abdulrahman said, adding: "He was a white man." Three employees of the Danish Demining Group, an American, a Dane and a Somali, were kidnapped near the Galkayo airport in October. The Somali was later freed. The town, lying between Galmudug and another self-proclaimed semi-autonomous province, Puntland, was the scene of violent clashes between rival clans and political groups in September. Somalia has been without an effective government for two decades. In September, Galmudug and Puntland signed a roadmap aimed at rebuilding the nation with Somalia's transitional government in Mogadishu. The two territories are both opposed to the Islamist Shebab rebels fighting the central government who control much of the south of the Horn of Africa country. Somalia is one of the most dangerous places in the world for aid workers, where three regions -- including parts of Mogadishu -- have been declared a famine zone by the UN. Despite aid efforts, up to 250,000 people face starvation in the famine zones, while some four million Somalis are in urgent need of aid across the Horn of Africa country, according to the UN. 10. MOGADISHU: Gunmen kidnapped an American man in the northern Somali town of Galkayo on Saturday, officials said. The gunmen surrounded the man's car shortly after the man left the airport, said policeman Abdi Hassan Nur, who witnessed the incident. He said they then forced the American into another vehicle. Galkayo is on the border between the semiautonomous northern region of Puntland and a region known as Galmudug. It is ruled by forces friendly to the U.N.-backed Somali government. A minister from the Galmudug administration said the kidnapped man is an American engineer who came to Somalia to carry out an evaluation for building a deep water port in the town of Hobyo. The gunmen severely beat the foreigner's Somali companion when he begged them not to take the man, said the minister. The minister spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press. A staff member at the Embassy Hotel, where the man was staying, said the American had gone to the airport to drop off an Indian colleague. The hotel said that the man had both American and German citizenship. The staff member asked not to be identified because he was not supposed to give out information about guests. In October, gunmen kidnapped an American woman and a Danish man working for the Danish Demining Group from the same town. They are still being held. Kidnapping for ransom is has become increasingly common in Somalia over the past five years. Currently at least four aid workers, a French military official, a British tourist taken from Kenya and hundreds of sailors are being held captive.
