Arab League Secretary General Amr Mousa agreed to send a high-ranking delegation to Somaliland to end Somaliland’s isolation in the Arab world. Somaliland’s Foreign Minister Abdillahi Duale said Mousa made the pledge in a meeting with him at African Summit in Addis Ababa early 2007. In a telephone conversation with Awdalnews Network, Duale said that Somaliland had briefed Mousa on the situation of the country and on Somaliland’s irreversible decision on its secession from Somalia. “We felt a new and positive attitude from the Arab League and we expressed our interest to break the ice in the frozen relations between our country and Arab countries,” he said, noting that Mousa saw the need to initiate a dialogue between Somaliland and the Arabs. Somaliland, a former British Protectorate that had declared itself independent from Somalia in 1991, accuses Arab states of blocking its attempts to win African support for its case. “We briefed Mousa on the irreparable damage that the continued Arab hostilities to Somaliland in the African Union conferences can do to Somaliland people’s historical ties with the Arab world,” Duale said, affirming the Secretary General’s consent to soften the Arab stance towards Somaliland, particularly Arab-African states such as Egypt and Sudan. He urged Arab League to normalize trade relations with Somaliland, referring to a seven-year Saudi Arabian ban on the import of Somaliland livestock, which had a crippling effect on the country’s economy as livestock constituted the mainstay of Somaliland’s economy. Duale also met with Arab League Rerpresentative [Representative] in AU earlier this week in Addis Ababa. The Arab League official also made a courtesy call on President Dahir Riyale Kahin during his stopoever [stop over] in Addis Ababa on his way home from Ghana. The President and Minister Duale both stressed the need for the Arab League official to follow up the Secretary General's promise to enegage [engage] with Somaliland. Duale who was a member of Somaliland delegation led by President Dahir Riyale Kahin that had participated in Ghana’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. “Ghana, which is current Chairman of the AU, has given full Presidential treatment to the Somaliland President who attended all functions alongside other African leaders,” Duale said. Duale said that the AU’s Peace and Security Council would discuss Somaliland’s case during its upcoming meeting. Source Awdal News Network

BBC Somali Section Head – Youssuf Garad Is The Remaining Warlord BBC Somali Section, like everything else in our world, is constantly changing. What was once strict ethic of the BBC may be considered as non ethic now. It is unfortunate that the internationally accredited BBC is still accommodating a Somali Warlord and permitted him to use the only source of information and news of the Somali people, for his sinister and criminal advocating propaganda internationally. Youssuf Garad is a Somali Warlord who is to be removed like all others were disgracefully chased away from their strong forts. Youssuf Garad is using a distant fort called BBC Bush House, where he devours irrationally all news that doesn’t match his wishes. He immorally disregards all information and news that does not serve his purpose, which is clannish in one time, hate propagating and supporting certain factions against others on the other hand. Last year during the time when the extremist Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) controlled many regions of Somalia including the Mogadishu, the capital city; Youssuf Garad blatantly sided with his uncle Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys who was the Head of the Shura of UIC. He over publicized the UIC out of proportion. Youssef Garad deliberately publicizes all negative propaganda against the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and its efforts to bring about a peaceful reconciliation. The reason is simple and clannish; because Abdillahi Youssuf Ahmed is from a different clan. Similarly, Youssuf Garad undermined and diluted almost all the positive and reconcilable endeavors of the TFG. He shamefully calls and holds international telephone conferences, by inviting, from around the world, certain elements of the Somali society who share his morbid opinion and casts through the BBC Somali service. He uses the BBC Somali service as a vehicle and tool to proliferate his religious and political believes. Moreover, Youssuf Garad has put a news embargo on Somaliland. Let alone to make feature articles covering the success stories about the achievements of Somaliland, he disregards main events to be broadcasted after BBC correspondents relay. Events related to Somaliland are no longer news items that pass his censorship with the exception of negative news items which he over publicizes. According to the famous and widely respected Somali Journalist, Mr. Dahir Abdulle Alasow, who is the editor of one of the most read Somali websites, Waaga Cusub ( The New Era), Youssuf Garad is using the BBC Somali service to promote something he calls the “UNITY of SOMALIA”! And he requested Mr. Alasow to use his influence and his journalistic talents against the Republic of Somaliland. Sadly, Mr. Alasow knowing the fact that Youssuf Garad is from his same clan, refused to collaborate with him. Instead, he urged Youssuf Garad to shun out abusing the privileges given to him and be neutral and fair about measures in Somalia. Mr. Dahir Abdulle Alasow is a man of integrity who preserves and builds up his journalistic career in a widely acclaimed sincerity. No wonder that Mr. Alasow turned down the weird requests of Youssuf Garad, and instead advised him to use the BBC Somali Section in a fair way as it was supposed to be! Youssuf Garad does not understand the growth of Internet do-it-yourself publishing in the present era, especially the weblog or blog style of personal publication that gave rise to disseminating and broadcasting news information and other debates around the world. And therefore, whatever news information he disregards and bars to be broadcasted are available in the internet straightly published by countless others in the right way. What's more, Youssuf Garad has recently started to hire young boys from his sub-sub-clan who possess neither journalist education nor experience, after he eliminated in one way or the other, most of the famous well known Somali broadcasters and journalists least they may see and challenge his wrong doings. He does not own the slightest journalistic attitude and morals. Somalis call Youssuf Garad “The Remaining Warlord” In short, a large portion of the audient population of the BBC Somali service are wondering why shouldn’t the BBC authorities correct Youssef Garad and re-train him, or stop this nastiest remaining Warlord from service. Youssef Garad, Sidii Roon Eebe Haku Garansiiyo. Aamiin Ahmed Egal Beijing, PRC ahegal@yahoo.com

Somaliland bans commercial flights form Somalia The government of Somaliland stopped the flights from southern Somalia in fear of the pandemic of watery diarrhea that killed and weighed down the largest number of children, most of them under the age of 6 in southern Somalia. A press release from the office of the minister for Somaliland air transportation, Ali Mohammed Waranadde, stated that all commercial flights from Somalia were barred from landing at Hargeysa international airport indefinitely. The minister told journalists that several towns in southern and Northeast Somalia, including Mogadishu and Bosaso, were banned from landing in Somaliland. “To prevent spread of cholera in Somaliland, we decided to stop flights from southern Somalia”, he said. Hundreds of children beset by the plague were admitted to public hospitals in Mogadishu while a large number of children succumbed to the disease. Public schools in the coastal town of Merca, 100 km south of Mogadishu, have been turned into medical centers, while students were given one month of a vacation early last week after hundreds of children in the town were ailing form diarrhea. And in the capital Mogadishu, more than 100 people, most of them children, have been admitted to Banadir hospital on 12 March after they were weighed down by watery diarrhea AllAfrica

NAIROBI, 15 March 2007 (IRIN) - Escalating violence and insecurity in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, forced at least 40,000 civilians to flee the city in February, United Nations humanitarian agencies working in the country have said. "Insecurity, fear of attacks, removal from public buildings and outright violence are the main reasons for the movement of peoples and more than 40,000 people have left Mogadishu in the past month," the agencies said in a February situation report released on Wednesday. Insecurity had also affected the ability of humanitarian organisations to respond to emergencies and emerging needs. "The insecurity has restricted mobility and access and this undermines efforts to re-engage at a level that would be a commensurate response to humanitarian needs," they said. Although cross-border movement of humanitarian supplies along the Kenya-Somali border had improved, movement of asylum-seekers remained impossible. The conflict in Somalia has lasted for 16 years and displaced millions. In early March, the first troops with the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) arrived in Mogadishu. Flooding in late-2006 also contributed to food insecurity. As a result, one million Somalis, including 400,000 people displaced countrywide, will need food aid in the next six months. "Somalia remains chronically food insecure, with IDPs [internally displaced persons] extremely vulnerable," the report said. According to the agencies, other factors could aggravate food security, including continued localised conflict, concern over Rift Valley Fever, which is still unconfirmed, and associated potential flooding. An increase in acute watery diarrhoea had also been reported, with a total of 3,633 cases throughout southern Somalia so far, including 143 deaths. These increased cases have been linked to post-flooding conditions, lack of access to safe drinking water and poor hygiene and sanitation practices. "Given the current context, it is essential that the creation of an enabling environment for the delivery of humanitarian assistance is supported and partners remain committed to the process of stabilisation and reconciliation, building on positive developments and new opportunities for access," the agencies said. The report was released as the Somali government announced it was planning a national reconciliation conference in April. Speaking to reporters in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, Prime Minister Ali Muhammad Gedi appealed for US$42 million to help improve security in Mogadishu before the conference.
