Mogadishu 21, March.07 ( Sh.M.Network) Heavy fighting between the Somali government troops backed by Ethiopians and a large number of armed Somalis opposing the government and the Ethiopians is continuing in the capital Mogadishu on Wednesday. The heavy gun battle started around 6:10 am local time and then spread into fresh areas in the capital where insurgents toughened their soldiers, increasing the number of combatants with the government troops and Ethiopians in south and north of Mogadishu. Witnesses around Former Somalia Defense Ministry told Shabelle that they saw at least 10 people, including 7 government soldiers and three civilians, who died in the gun battle. Shabelle reporters who went to the area where that fighting was happening reported that they saw seven government soldiers who were wounded and captured by the insurgents. The Ethiopians based at Defense Ministry compound in south of Mogadishu have been attacked by the gunmen while the Ethiopians have been firing tanks and missiles towards north of Mogadishu. It is not yet known the exact number of civilian casualties in today’s fighting. However, the fighting is continuing for four consecutive hours. Also Shabelle reporter and a driver were arrested by government soldiers at Mogadishu international airport today, while waiting to cover live reports of a press conference due to be held by prime minister Ali Mohammed Gedi. Local journalists were informed by the premier’s assistants this morning that there would be a press conference which would be held by the prime minister inside the airport. Government soldiers embarked on arresting journalists when they got the airport. The fighting comes a day after ****** clan issued a press statement condemning the transitional government and threatening they would fight with the government if it did not change what it called the discriminating policy against the Somali clans. Several bodies of Ethiopian and government troops were thrown at roads of hawlwadag, Bar Ubah and Shirlole neighborhoods as crowds of Somalis began dragging them to the ground.

Somaliland to host the meeting There is a regional model worth emulating! The former British protectorate, Somaliland (to the north) has all but mastered the grassroots, bottom up approach of Somali political representation and transition. There, power is defused among elders (Guurti), and elected representatives to parliament, follow the social contract, support overlapping but separate powers, and insure the peaceful transfer of power. Three successful elections and peaceful transfers of power prove this point, perhaps unique among recent political activities on the entire African continent. Somaliland, as a location, also offers many advantages as the preferred place to launch this new paradigm for all Somalis. Thus, we propose an all inclusive meeting where the international community can facilitate this approach and explore how best to implement it with the representative leaders of the Somali tribes, the TFG ,members of the UIC, members of the Diaspora, as well as local and international NGO’s. Having undergone a similar process (without help from the international community), Somaliland’s leaders can share their experiences with other Somalis. It is also critical that these Somalis are seen by all as neutral in the ongoing struggle for power in Mogadishu. Hargeisa, Somaliland, also can provide a secure environment for such a meeting to take place. A simple corollary is that it is in the best interest for the future of Somaliland to have a legitimate government in the South so that it can help resolve the thorny issue of convergence, semi-autonomy, or full independence for Somaliland. Terrorism war guise for minority crackdown - report UNITED NATIONS, March 20 (Reuters) - Pakistan, Turkey and Israel are using the U.S.-led war on terrorism as an excuse to crack down on minority groups, a rights group said on Tuesday. A study by Minority Rights Group International also found that minority peoples living on the front lines for the war on terrorism were among the world's most-threatened, with Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan ranking in a global top 10. "Some governments around the world are pinning their hopes on the fact that if they are allies with the United States then it will allow them to do certain things against minority communities within their own borders," Ishbel Matheson, spokeswoman for the London-based advocacy group, said. "I think that is completely unacceptable and the United States should be alive to it and condemn it, unfortunately I don't think that's what they do," she told a news conference. The group's report "State of the World's Minorities 2007" singled out Pakistan, Turkey and Israel for "intensified repression of particular ethnic communities in 2006." It ranked Pakistan No. 8 on a list of countries where minorities are most under threat and said Islamabad oppressed groups including Ahmadis, Hindus, Baluchis, Mohhajirs, Pashtuns and Sindhis. Turkey came in at number 39 for its treatment of Kurds and Roma, while Israel was ranked 54 for its behavior toward Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and Israeli Palestinians. "U.S. allies have managed to barter their support for the war on terror in return for having their human-rights record ignored," Mark Lattimer, the director of Minority Rights Group International, said in a statement. "The debate continues to rage about whether the 'war on terror' has made the world a safer place for the West, but it has certainly made it a much more dangerous place for minorities," he said. The report said the war of terrorism had also given rise to Islamophobia throughout Europe, with some governments adopting laws that curb the rights of all citizens but particularly target Muslim communities, leaving them feeling increasingly "intimidated and persecuted." Somalia, Iraq, Sudan, Afghanistan, Burma, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Pakistan, Angola and Russia make up the top 10 countries identified by the report as places where minority peoples are most under threat. African states make up half the report's top 20 list. The biggest jump in the list was by Sri Lanka, which soared 47 places to be ranked 14 in the 2007 list of some 70 countries after fighting between the Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam, who want an independent state in the country's north and east, and the government intensified during the past year. Three countries fell out of the report's top 20 -- Indonesia, where an Aceh peace agreement has so far held, and Liberia and Algeria, which both continue to recover from devastating wars during the 1990s.

Minorities in Somalia are World's Most Endangered Written by The Media Line Staff Published Tuesday, March 20, 2007 Somalia is currently the world’s most dangerous country for minorities, according to a report analyzing minorities under threat. Arab countries dominate a list of countries where minority communities are most endangered, according to the annual report of the London-based Minority Rights Group International (MRG). Somalia replaces Iraq, which headed the list last year and came second this year. Sudan came third in this year’s ranking of Peoples under Threat, a feature of the organization’s annual State of the World’s Minorities report. Sudan’s ranking is a result of the continuing violence in the western Darfur province in which tribes such as Zaghawa, Masalit and Fur are being targeted. Somalia witnessed fierce fighting in December and January when government forces, with backing from the Ethiopian army, defeated Islamists who took over the capital last summer. MRG said that although the new government brought hope of democracy, “there is the specter of a return of large-scale clan violence. Groups that supported the old order are now under tremendous threat.” Iraq continues to see targeted killings of minority groups such as Christians, Yezidis and Mandaeans, the report said. Other minority groups in Iraq face daily violence, torture and political assimilation, which had compelled many minority communities to flee the country. The organization added that the war on terror had made the world a much more dangerous place for minorities. MRG is a non-governmental organization working to secure the rights of ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities and indigenous peoples worldwide. Copyright © 2006 The Media Line.
