  7. 1 Daily Soda May Boost Heart Disease Researchers Point Finger at Diet, Regular Sodas; Industry Officials Disagree July 23, 2007 -- Drinking just one soft drink a day -- whether diet or regular -- may boost your risk of getting heart disease, a new study shows. That is because a soda habit increases the risk of developing a condition called metabolic syndrome, according to the new research, and that in turn boosts the chance of getting both heart disease and diabetes. "Even one soda per day increases your risk of developing metabolic syndrome by about 50%," says Ramachandran Vasan, MD, professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and the senior author of the study, published in the July 31 issue of the American Heart Association's journal Circulation. To be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, three of five criteria must be met: a large waistline, elevated blood pressure, elevated fasting blood sugar, elevated fasting triglycerides, or reduced HDL or "good" cholesterol. "This study adds to the wealth of scientific evidence that sugar-sweetened beverages increase the risk of metabolic syndrome," says Vasan. Already, he says, the rise in sugary drink consumption has been linked to the epidemic of obesity and diabetes among children and teens and to the development of high blood pressure in adults. Soda-Heart Disease Link Questioned The food and beverage industry takes issue with the finding. Roger Clemens, DrPH, a spokesperson for the Institute of Food Technologists, calls the study findings "oversimplified." "There are many attributes associated with the development of metabolic syndrome," Clemens tells WebMD. "Some of which are part of lifestyle choices, such as eating too many calories." Diet soda is a more appropriate choice than regular soda, he says. "It's way too soon to say stop drinking diet soda," says Clemens, a professor of molecular toxicology at the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy, Los Angeles, who is familiar with the new research. "Diet soda, in moderation, can be part of a healthy lifestyle." Study Details Vasan and his colleagues evaluated about 3,500 men and women participating in the Framingham Offspring Study. The offspring study began in 1971, following the original Framingham Heart Study launched in 1948. The offspring study included 5,124 people in all. The questions about soda and other dietary habits were asked at three different exam periods, from 1987 to 1991, 1991 to 1995, and 1995 to 1998. The average age of those who answered questions about their soft drink intake and other health habits was 53 during the three exam periods, Vasan says. At the first exam period, those who drank one or more soft drinks daily had a 48% increased prevalence of having metabolic syndrome compared with those who drank less than one a day, the researchers found. As the study progressed, drinking one or more sodas a day was linked with a 44% higher risk of participants developing metabolic syndrome, Vasan's team found, compared with drinking less than a soda a day. The researchers looked at soda consumption and the person's risk of developing each of the five criteria of metabolic syndrome. "Other than elevated blood pressure, the risk of developing the other four increased from about 20% to 30% with one soda a day," Vasan tells WebMD. They also found a trend toward an increased risk of developing high blood pressure with soda consumption, but it wasn't enough to be considered significant. For More

  9. NAIROBI, July 23 (Reuters) - Ethiopia's ****** rebels called for a U.N. investigation on Monday after the government was accused of blocking food aid to their remote eastern region. The ****** National Liberation Front (ONLF) is seeking more autonomy for its homeland bordering Somalia. Addis Ababa says it is a terrorist group bankrolled by arch-foe Eritrea. On Sunday, a report in The New York Times quoted Western diplomats and relief officials saying Ethiopia's government was blockading emergency food aid and choking off trade to ******. Ethiopian government officials were not immediately available to comment. On Monday, the ONLF said Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's administration was engaged in a systematic and deliberate campaign of violence against its people. "These war crimes include diverting humanitarian assistance for use by the regime's armed forces ... deliberate burning of villages, arbitrary arrests, extrajudicial killings, torture, a blockade on food aid as well as other commercial goods and other forms of collective punishment," the ONLF said in a statement. The ONLF itself has been accused of carrying out atrocities, including an April raid on a Chinese-run oil field in which 74 people were killed and seven Chinese workers taken hostage. They were later freed but in the wake of the attack, Meles announced a crackdown on the rebels. It is difficult to get independent information out of the desolate region, which is ethnically Somali. In its statement on Monday, the ONLF called for a U.N. fact-finding mission. "The United Nations bears a particular responsibility to investigate war crimes in ****** given recent reports that its humanitarian assistance is deliberately being diverted to armed forces and militias responsible for these war crimes," it said. "The ONLF wishes to affirm to the international community that if there is no immediate intervention in the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in ******, there will be a man-made famine created by the current regime of Meles Zenawi." 11. TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran is to launch a new crackdown Monday on slack dressing that targets both men and women whose clothing and haircuts are deemed to be unIslamic, police said. "The police will act against those whose trousers are too short, have skin-tight coats, shirts with Western logos and Western hairstyles," said Ahmad Reza Radan, the head of Tehran's police force. "We will ask those arrested where they bought their clothes and where they had their hair cut so those outlets can be closed down," state broadcasting's website quoted him as saying. Radan said anyone arrested would receive a warning and have their name added to a list. "If they reoffend, there will be no pardon." Since the drive began in April, thousands have been warned and hundreds arrested across Iran for failing to adhere to the country's Islamic dress code, its toughest such crackdown in years. Women in Iran are obliged to cover all bodily contours and their heads but in recent years many have pushed the boundaries by showing off bare ankles and fashionably styled hair beneath their headscarves. Some women still don figure-hugging coats and skimpy headscarves despite the April crackdown. By renewing the drive, it appears the police want to send a message that they are serious about enforcing the dress rules. Many conservatives have applauded the crackdown as important to protect the security of society, but moderates have publicly questioned whether Iran would be better off tackling poverty and crime rather than slack dressing. 13. ANKARA, Turkey - Turkey's prime minister pledged to work toward national unity and fight terrorism after the Islamic-rooted ruling party won parliamentary elections by a wide margin. Although the ruling party's success has been touted as proof that Islam and democracy can coexist, the new government is likely to face persistent tension over the role of Islam in society. State-run Anatolia news agency was projecting that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party would win 340 of the 550 seats, as votes in all but six of more than 158,000 ballot boxes across the country were counted. Erdogan, a devout Muslim, pledged to safeguard the country's secular traditions and do whatever the government deems necessary to fight separatist Kurdish rebels. "We will never make concessions over the values of people, the basic principles of our republic. This is our promise. We will embrace Turkey as a whole without discriminating," he said at a rally in the capital, Ankara. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso congratulated Erdogan's victory. "This comes at an important moment for the people of Turkey as the country moves forward with political and economic reforms," Barroso said in a statement. The EU chief said that Erdogan "has given his personal commitment to the sustained movement towards" the EU. The 27-nation bloc, while divided over whether Turkey should one day join the club, continues to spur Ankara to continue reforms to keep on track its membership bid. Ruling party supporters clapped, danced and waved flags depicting the party symbol, a light bulb, outside the party's office in Istanbul. In Ankara, hundreds whooped as they watched election results on a big TV screen set up outside party headquarters. "We are very happy," university student Reyhan Aksoy said. "God willing, great days await us." The election was called early to defuse a showdown with the military-backed, secular establishment, which contended that Erdogan and his allies were plotting to scrap Turkey's secular traditions despite their openness to the West. Erdogan raised concern with his efforts as prime minister to make adultery a crime and appoint former Islamists to key positions. Critics also were troubled by his calls for the lifting of restrictions on the wearing of Islamic headscarves. The government will have to decide how to deal with violence by Kurdish rebels seeking autonomy. NATO member Turkey is considering whether to stage an offensive into northern Iraq against separatist Kurdish rebels who rest, train and resupply at bases there. Erdogan has warned the incursion could happen if security talks with Iraq and the U.S. fail. He has invited Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to visit Turkey. "In our struggle against separatist terrorists, we are determined to take every step at the right time," Erdogan said of the conflict with the Kurds. The commander of Iraq-based Kurdish rebels told The Associated Press in an interview that he believes Turkey will quickly follow the elections with a long-anticipated offensive against his remote mountain bases. Murat Karayilan, the leader of the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, warned that his fighters were prepared for battle, but denied Ankara's charges that his group was using Iraqi soil to launch attacks against Turkish forces across the border. He was speaking on Friday. Turkey has made big strides after the economic and political chaos of past decades, but some feared the vote could deepen divisions in the mostly Muslim nation of 70 million. The country has an emboldened class of devout Muslims, led by a ruling party willing to pursue Western-style reforms to strengthen the economy and join the European Union. Under Erdogan inflation has dropped, foreign investment has increased, and the economy has grown at an annual average of 7 percent. The success of the ruling party signaled continuity in economic reforms and in Turkey's troubled efforts to join the European Union. "We will press ahead with reforms and the economic development that we have been following so far," Erdogan said in his victory speech. One of Parliament's first jobs will be to elect a president. The post is largely ceremonial, but the incumbent has the power to veto legislative bills and government appointments. In May, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul abandoned his presidential bid after opponents said Gul's election would remove the last obstacle to an Islamic takeover of government and the military — instigator of past coups — threatened to intervene to safeguard secularism. Though the ruling party emerged from the vote with a smaller majority than in 2002 elections, its officials expressed surprise with how well they did given the current atmosphere of tension with the secularists. Two secular parties, the Republican People's Party and the Nationalist Action Party, won 112 seats and 71 seats, respectively, Anatolia said. Politicians backed by a Kurdish party that seeks more rights for the ethnic minority returned to Turkey's Parliament for the first time in more than a decade. The Democratic Society Party, or DTP, won 24 seats in the 550-seat Parliament, according to CNN-Turk television. The party's candidates ran as independents to circumvent a 10 percent vote threshold required to win representation in Parliament. The Kurdish politicians were expected to regroup under the party banner when the new Parliament convenes. According to project results, 50 female lawmakers are expected to enter the Parliament, bringing the share of woman lawmakers in the Parliament to an all-time high of almost 10 percent, the Milliyet newspaper said. Fourteen parties and 700 independent candidates competed for a total of 42.5 million eligible voters. Voting is compulsory in Turkey, though fines for failing to vote are rarely imposed, and 2002 election turnout was 79 percent. Turnout was more than 80 percent, and voting was largely peaceful, election officials said. Belo
  14. Good topic indeed although i didn't open the link but the topic itself is worth discussing if some members don't ruin the discussion. I consider Laascaanood my second hometown in the country and i know a lot of thing in that particular region. Well, i believe. There two major problems tackling the development of the region: 1- Lack of leadershiop: This is what you've mentioned in the topic and YES there is no committed leadership in the region. I'm not talking about the people (general public) but i'm talking about the leadership. They are divided into more than 3 groups. To be honest some are with Somaliland, some are with the TFG and some are with the ICU/Asmara group while others seem to be silent for the moment. Instead of working to develop the region those groups are chasing each other and focusing on their political activities only. 2- The region is disputed: Yes it is. The region is between Somaliland and puntland disputes and will never be developed until this problem is solved. I'm not questioning why Somaliland and why puntland but to be stick to the fact that the dispute is there whetever someone would translate it. Look at those disputed regions in the world, they've never been developed. PUNTLAND Most of the region is under direct administration of puntland although some parts are under somaliland management and control. If you look closely you'll see that puntland has not planned for the region towards any development programs. For example, if you look at THIS you can see the region is not included in the development programs so far. I don't know what else and i don't live in puntland but i'm refering to the official website of the puntland administration. I've seen a lot of people from that region and some of them clearly complain that puntland and the TFG (although it is new) only know how to collect soldiers from the region. I've been hearing a lot that people are coming to the region to request more personnel to be armed for either puntland or TFG. Thousands of young people are now in Mogadishu to fight against those who are opposing the tfg. So far, the region have not gained any returns of their sacrifice. People are doing their best but the external support is missing even from those living in the abroad are not doing that much to encourage and implement a development projects. SOMALILAND Somaliland doesn't control most of the region so still their role is limited. Even those they control they never developed. They only bring troops to station that areas to say it is our territory and that is it. I've seen some development projects aimed for the region but they always get lost in the middle of no where. Some ppl from the region always get some funds and they never reach the destination. That is well-known here and i personally know some ppl. Somaliland always talk about the region in general just like puntland is doing but i've never seen any detailed development program. When i asked some ppl why they don't implement some projects they told me they don't control the region so they don't have access. For me it is just a weak justification but even those areas they control are not developed and not yet seen any projects there. One story i remember is that, WHO was doing a Polio campaign and they sent a team from Hargeisa to Laascaanood to do the vaccination with all the materials. As soon as the arrived laascaanood the puntland administration took over the equipments, arrested the team and took all the medicines to Garowe. Finally the vaccination was done in Garowe instead of Laascaanood. I was listening to the BBC when they asked someone from puntand why they did this and he was saying it was illegal to send teams from Hargeisa because laascaanood is part of Puntland. Well, that is a point and for the moment laascaanood is under puntland administration but what did the people of laascaanood do to loose the vaccination ? at least they could send another team from Garowe then implement the vaccination campaign in Lascaanood itself. IN CONCLUSION Untill those problems are solved (although it is hard to solve) then the region will still be behind in the development programs. The region is under military influence for the moment, puntland is in laascaanood and somaliland is few KMs from the city. Anything can happen any minute that can destroy the whole region. I heard Dahabshiil was recently doing a great job by providing some asssistance to Laascaanood hospital. it is a step forward but we still need to come up with more solutions.
  15. In general it means if the man can't do those three things he can't manage himself ... i mean he is weak. That is if he can't sew his clother when needed, he can't take decisions and can't make money by saving it he is weak.
  16. The beauty of democracy is how the political parties exercise their right to freedom and that could be attained on how these institutions deliver their responsibilities in representing their constituencies. However; the services provided by political parties in Somaliland do not please me and that could be attributed to many factors chief among them are traditions and norms that govern the political and democracy of this country. Following are commentary of points usually missed by the political parties in Somaliland. The political parties in Somaliland have very much similar political beliefs and objectives (to attain political power within the government) but do not often espouse a certain ideology and vision to lift the country out of mess. Some of the political parties (kulmiye) for instances potray failed politicians who project them selves as the men of the masses, taking up the issues of the man of the street instead of clear political agenda with mission and another ( UCID) do not even let the government criticized for core issues that unites or pull the people together but instead make sheer accusations based only in personal interest and hatred and think only more often how they would survive in the years to come. Other (ruling party) drive people politically by using cheap tactics taking advantage of what they want rather than genuine political reality. they oppose the ruling party simply for the sake of power but do not feel that they are free to criticize the government policies and provide or propose an alternative approach or view. The point missing in the political parties in Somaliland are they do not know even that they have a role to play in keeping the public informed about issues relating to government administration and are not supposed to put personal hatred and groupings above everything else but must win the hearts and souls of every citisen in order to achieve a paradise of politics and that could be possible when the political party has an objective, vision, ideology and of course principles which a political party supports to appeal to the general public for the purpose of having said party's candidates voted into office. A Political philosophy is also missing which must be the driven force of the party and one that raises public consciousness through workshops, public rallies and debates in both print and electronic media. The party should have programme based on the philosophy held by the party and there are two different types of programmes i.e. programmes made on grounds of principle and working programmes. The former contain the general and fundamental beliefs whereas the latter is more specific and can be considered a working tool in the daily work. The working programme accounts for the future political plans of the party within a specific number of areas relating to society and for that case party should seek support for its programes as programes are from the people by the people and for the people; having said that the party will have an influence over the state of affairs be in the parliament (Guurti also included in this case) and if you don’t have that influence the existance of such party is in question and you have no excuse - none what so ever not to win them. It should have also links with similar parties in the neighboring countries and governments as it makes the difference in the local politics. The party membres and the general public may have concerns regarding every thing in the form of criticism but there must be tolerance and accepetance of the critics to make sure that mistakes are corrected and the demands of the people are addressed adequately so that people feel that their concerns are felt and that rules of truth and evidence determine direction of the party and the government. 18. Marines from 6th Provisional Security Company trained Djiboutian police officers in the fundamentals of marksmanship and weapons handling at a firing range near Camp Lemonier July 12. During the training session, the Djiboutian police officers learned how to properly walk with a loaded weapon while engaging a target, sight alignment and sight picture, how to hold the weapon, muzzle awareness, proper commands on the firing line and the importance of keeping the weapon on safe and finger off the trigger when not engaging a target. “The overall objective of this event is to develop teamwork, learn their strengths and weaknesses with small arms and build a stronger camaraderie with them,” said Marine Master Sgt. Harry McBrien, 6th PSC operations chief. The Djiboutian police officers stand watch at the front gate of Camp Lemonier alongside the Marines, so it’s important for them to have the basics down in the event something happens. “It helps them help us,” said Marine Sgt. William McDaniel, combat marksmanship trainer. “If they were to encounter someone, they now have the fundamentals to take down that assailant or hit a target successfully.” According to Marine Cpl. Jerome Vereen, even though it’s only the fundamentals, it will still help them in a real-world scenario. “The threat is definitely out there, so if they are properly trained to defend themselves, Camp Lemonier and the Marines they stand alongside, then we can engage the enemy together using the techniques we taught them today,” he said. “We want them to be successful, and making sure they can fire a weapon safely and effectively is extremely important.” The importance of the event also hit home for the Djiboutian police officers, especially Sgt. Mohamed Houssein. “The training I’ve received today will help me when I stand guard at the base,” he said. “Now that I have the fundamentals, I am able to do my job better and help the Marines if something were to happen.” At the end of the training session it wasn’t about who got the most bullets on the targets or who had the better firing pose, it was about building relationships and improving their skill level. “This is an opportunity to build relations and see first hand what their strengths and weaknesses are so we can determine how much more training they’ll need and what it will consist of,” he said. “This will help us work together better to complete the mission here in the Horn of Africa.” here
