Darfur and ******: colonial parallels The crises that both regions have undergone for long are of similar, colonial, origin; it was an aberration to form a ‘country’ like the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, a most disreputable and anachronistic – already in the late 19th century – device absolutely unable to replace the Ottoman rule. Part of the colonial Pan-Arabist plot, the ‘Arabic’ Sudan permanently plunged this great African country in underdevelopment, tyranny, and national – cultural disfigurement of the worst sort. Sudan was never Arabic; not a single Arab arrived in Sudan, which was home to three African Christian states in the north of its present territory, namely Nobatia, Makkuria, and Alodia that fell to the rising African Muslim forces only very ‘late’. Nobatia and Makkuria fell in the 13th – 14th centuries to Fatemid and Mameluk Egypt, and Alodia collapsed in the 16th century to the Central African Funj Islamic state, after having been left without help from the Gondar centered kingdom of Abyssinia that was also facing great challenges at those days. The inclusion of Darfur in the ill-fated colonial entity that was prepared for the Pan-Arabist barbarism was a criminal act that was perpetrated without the indigenous population’s involvement and against its will. Twenty five Somali journalists from various news media organisations and freelancers took part in two-day workshop held between 31 July and 1 August 2007 at Maan-Soor Hotel. They included journalists from Mogadishu, Kismayu, Beledweyn, Jowhar, Baidoa, Bossasso and Galkayo. The International News Safety Institute (INSI) and the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) coordinated the safety training workshop, which is the first-ever for Somali journalists in Hargeisa, Somaliland. The safety training seminar taught journalists about personal safety, pre-deployment planning, conflict management, dealing with hostile crowds, ballistic awareness and reaction to shooting, checkpoints, abduction and basic first aid. All trained journalists were given a first aid kit for field use. The training was taught by a British trainer from the TOR International, a security and training firm based in the United Kingdom. "We want to introduce safety concepts to Somali journalists so they can better protect themselves in hostile environment" said Sarah de Jong, Deputy Director of INSI. "Somalia is our priority because of the ever-increasing numbers of Somali journalists killed or wounded while doing their journalistic work". "Somali journalists face dangerous problems in reporting current issues and events due to prolonged conflict driven by political intolerance" said Omar Faruk Osman, Secretary General of NUSOJ. "This training is very important for journalists to learn how to protect themselves from risks in front of them". Somalia has become one of the world's most dangerous places for journalists and the most dangerous place in Africa, with four journalists killed since January 2007. The workshop also addressed a variety of security issues often faced by Somali journalists. NUSOJ is working closely with INSI, a non-governmental organization that was established on 3 May 2003 by a unique coalition of news outfits, journalist unions and humanitarian campaigners, by hiring Somalia Safety Information Coordinator based in Mogadishu. INSI and NUSOJ are planning to hold two more seminars to train fifty Somali journalists. Partners of the project are Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Endowment for Democracy, International Labour Organisation and Vikes Organisation of Media, Communication and Development.

Reports reaching our service desk from the city of Awaare confirm the find of the bodies of two youth who have been strangled to death. One of the strangled youth was reported to be one of the Awaare city dwellers. The bodies of the deceased were found in the outskirts of the city in a place locals call Duud Cadaad. The names of the deceased have been confirmed as Maxamed Biixi Daahir (Waafi) and Maxamed Cali Guray. Locals interviewed by our reporter in the area, said that the two deceased youth were very popular in the city. One of them was reported to have been an employee of the so-called local administration. After an investigation in to the possible motives of whoever might have killed the two youths using strangulation, our reporter found out from highly places sources within the local administration that the youths objected to proposals to join a new militia force meant to fight ****** National Liberation Front, ONLF, in Awaare and its environs. The highly places sources added that the plans were given to Mr. Ismaaciil Mahad, the local representative of the so-called local administration. Mr. Ismaaciil was tasked to create and lead on behalf of the Ethiopian military an armed militia. The bodies of the two deceased youth were found in terrible shape. They showed signs of extreme torture prior to being strangulated to death. Some parts of the deceased’s bodies were reported eaten by hyenas that found the bodies upon being dumped in Duud Cadaad and before the locals were able to find their bodies. The fact that hyenas ate parts of the youth’s bodies has become another death sentence to the relatives of the deceased. The deceased were reported to have been part of over seventy-two civilians who were detained in the Ethiopian military garrison in Awaare. Most of the detained were illegally rounded up in the middle of July 2007. So far there is no reliable information regarding the detained civilians. SOURCE
