U.S policy is destabilizing Somaliland, should be rethought

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Young girls who believe they are lactose-intolerant take in less calcium and have thinner bones than their peers who don't think they had any trouble consuming dairy products, a new study shows. But when these girls were tested to determine if they actually did have difficulty digesting lactose, many did not. "It's a little concerning that you have young girls during this period of time when they actually obtain their peak bone mass...that they have already been influenced that they are intolerant to milk for whatever reason," said Dr. Carol J. Boushey of Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana, the study's lead author. Boushey and her team looked for ties between perceived milk intolerance, bone mineral content, and calcium consumption in a group of 10- to 13-year-old girls. They also tested them for lactose maldigestion, which occurs when activity of the lactose-digesting enzyme lactase is reduced, and can be identified with a breath test. People with the condition can usually drink or eat a single serving of dairy, for example 8 ounces of milk, without having intolerance symptoms, but may have indigestion if they consume larger amounts. Of the 246 girls in the study, 47 said they were milk intolerant. Forty of these girls completed breath testing, which identified only 18 as true lactose mal digesters. Girls who thought they had milk intolerance consumed 212 milligrams fewer calcium daily than their peers who didn't have this perception, and also had a lower mineral content in their spine. Altogether, 230 girls took the breath test, and 100 were found to be lactose mal digesters. But these individuals consumed no less calcium, and had equal bone mineral content, to their peers who had no trouble digesting milk. The fact that girls who considered themselves lactose intolerant were consuming less calcium at such a young age could put them at risk of osteoporosis later on, Boushey noted. It's not clear, she added, where this perception is coming from, but she and her colleagues are investigating whether parents' perception of their own lactose intolerance has anything to do with how their children feel about dairy products. "I don't think that this comes from the girls, they're way too young, it has to come from something around them," she said. SOURCE: Pediatrics

U.S policy is destabilizing Somaliland, should be rethought A popular theory in the Arab media that purportedly explains United States policy in the Middle East is called chaos theory. What is meant by this is that although the U.S often claims it wants democracy, peace and stability to prevail in the Middle East, its actual policy is to incite war and chaos, so that Middle Eastern countries would then have to depend on the U.S for arms and protection. One does not have to be an ardent believer in such theory to recognize that there is an element of truth in this theory, at least when it comes to U.S policy toward Somaliland. Granted that Somaliland does not have the financial means to buy arms from U.S manufacturers, nevertheless, U.S policy (or non-policy) toward Somaliland is a destabilizing factor. Why do we say this? First, there are three major players in what used to be the Somali Republic: the warlords that banded together under the Transitional Federal Republic of Somalia (Puntland is part of this group), the Islamic Courts, and Somaliland. By throwing its weight behind the TFG without addressing Somaliland’s concerns about the security imbalance that would ensue, the U.S has created a perception among Somalilanders that it is not concerned about the security and stability of their country. Second, the U.S spends millions of dollars on its base in Djibouti, a few miles from Somaliland’s borders. The activities of these troops whether it is by air or sea is targeted at Somalis, including Somaliland. The fact that the only side of America that Somalilanders experience comes in the form of constant air and naval surveillance as well as the occasional land forays, has reinforced among Somalilanders the sense that the U.S does not take their interests into account. Third, the U.S has been very generous with the dictator of Djibouti, Omar Guelleh who does not even hide his links with the same Islamic Courts that the U.S has branded as terrorists, whereas the U.S has not taken a single initiative in support of Somaliland, even though Somaliland has dismantled several terrorist networks affiliated with the Islamic Courts. U.S policy toward Somaliland is unfair, irrational and counterproductive. It is creating a lot of hostility for the United States and is destabilizing Somaliland; hence, it should be changed, unless spreading chaos is actually U.S policy. Source: Somaliland Times

On September 8th, the International Literacy Day is celebrated all over the world. Growing up in Italy, where Illiteracy rates are negligible, the real scale of the issue and with it the importance of this day came to my attention only when I moved to Somaliland two years ago. Somaliland is a country with a history of conflicts, going through civil wars in the late eighties and early nineties. Although these conflicts lay some years back, Somaliland is still recovering from the devastating impact which they had - among others - on the education sector: due to the conflicts, an entire generation missed any chance to attend primary school at a young age; yet, even today, 60% of school aged children are still denied access to formal or alternative basic education, due to lack of learning facilities, learning materials, trained teachers and funds. In addition, nomadic and semi nomadic lifestyles, poverty, gender inequality, just to name some, result in total exclusion of certain groups from any learning opportunity. According to recent estimations, 75% of the adult population of Somaliland are illiterate. Worldwide, an estimated 800 million don't know how to read and write. The fact that approximately two thirds of these are women, makes the issue of illiteracy not just a violation of one of the most basic human rights, the right to education, but also an indicator for gender based discrimination. Back to my first encounter with illiteracy two years ago. I was shocked, sad and angry when I first got to know about the real scale of the problem. I couldn't understand how 75% of the Somaliland population, or 800 million adults around the world can be deprived of such a basic right without anybody really bothering about it. Two years down the line, I have come across many initiatives in Somaliland, but also worldwide, which indeed demonstrate efforts and will to keep youth and adult literacy on the agenda. In Somaliland, numerous local Non Governmental Organizations are offering courses with whatever means they can get, and a few International NGOs and UN agencies, including Caritas the one I am working for, do their best to support these local NGOS in bringing literacy to the people of Somaliland. Only few days ago, I have had a chance to visit some of our local partner NGOS that offers literacy courses in the town of Burao, and it was amazing and touching to see the engagement with which the female course participants followed the lesson. They were of all age groups, carrying with them a diversity of individual life stories, but still having one thing in common: the desire to know how to read and write. Although each of them might have her own individual reasons for attending a literacy course, there are also some benefits of literacy commonly agreed upon: for one, literacy is vital to reduce gender inequality, since it increases women's participation in public and private spheres. Literacy is also crucial for the deveopment and education of children, in particular the girl child, since literate parents raise healthier and more literate children. Literacy is also an important factor in the campaign against the spread of HIV AIDS. Literacy is as much a human right as it is the basis for a democratic and economic development of countries. In Somaliland, the task to make literacy accessible to everybody seems to huge to be even thought of. And yet, I can see at least one factor which should be encouraging enough to tackle the issue: the demand and wish expressed in all corners of the country, by all people of the country to get access to courses. People, it seems, don't need to be made aware about the benefits of literacy, or aware about the universal right to education. They long for it. Some few books and a blackboard is in many cases sufficient to get a course started. I really do belief that with joint efforts, and contribution from all sides, from the community, local NGOs, international NGOs, Government and donors, illiteracy will one day, soon, be filed in the "issues of the past" file.
