  1. ^ It's atheer. That's how you say it. Not adeer. Not adheer. Not areer. Capisce, atheer?
  2. ^ Ameen atheer. This is off topic but when I read the word cadanyo, I couldn't help but sing (my favorite) Sahra Axmad song with the word cadanyo replacing laqanyo. Can anyone translate this into English? There are far too many heavy Somali words for me in here. This would be a delightful wedding song, no? cadanyada jacaylkiyo lurka caashaq kululaa ruuxdaadu lahatayoo kugu laadey ba'anaa waxan hadalba ii labin sida la iigu kaa ladhey hadii aad lix goor noqo itidhaa laba iyo toban naftan libiqsaneysee laabaneysa leedhe ladanow miyaan la'aantaa aniguu ladayaa hurdada
  3. Nice. Compare this to today where tents are the fashion du jour and schools, well that is too much of a luxury. We're well on our way to becoming Neanderthals.
  4. ^ Waan ka xumahay atheer Daanyeerow. Hyenaha bisinka u qabo.
  5. ^ Usheeg atheer. This Northerner dude is giving the Qaldaans an even worse reputation. Originally posted by hodman: Directionally challenged I'd say I have a cousin who'll actually look at her two hands to find out which one is midig or bidix and the only way she can tell is which one she eats with. So which one is midhig for her? My daughter has that left-right problem too. The question she asked that I had no answer for, however, is why left is called left? The way we now know the left is the one being used is to form an L (for loser ) with the index and thumb perpendicular to each other. If it's the actual L, it's your left hand hand. Bright kid, I say.
  6. Tell him Muraad. If I had to read Northerner's bidhix one more time I'd have slit my throat.
  7. Blessed, Ilaahay caqliga kuudaa atheer. Meeshan mar mar waxay dadku soo qoraan, cadanyaan ka qaada. As for traditional weddings, my parents' wedding nearly 4 decades ago in Somalia had a white dress and a black tuxedo. Not to mention a white cake and ring exchanges. That must have been the tradition then. Mine, in the west, was a mix and match. It all depends on taste, family influences and finances, of course. My one pet peeve, however, is spending $50,000 in one night and $30,000 on furniture (all borrowed of course) to put in a one bedroom (basement) apartment. This would be followed by either a divorce a year later or having 'tolka' collect money for you coz you can't feed your kids. Now that's asinine.

  9. LOZ, that shower area is two small for two people. The problem with showering with someone lies in how hot they want their water to be. Some people shower in 100° C water. Others are cold showerers. Combine the two and you've got a riot. Thumbs down for showering together.
  10. This woman did more for Somalis than those so-called governments did. And for the ability to have children, it is a blessing from the Almighty but even squirrels have kids. She built that hospital right where Somali women are pregnant yearly. I'm sure she has a thing or two to say about how poor health and poverty are related to having more kids than one can handle.
  11. Below you can read what, in my view, shows the Holocaust is not so much a human tragedy anymore but a political tool to further advance Israel's occupation of Palestine. If it were really commemorated for what it was, its survivors would be treated more humanely. Remember that Israel, in 2003, spent $9.11 billion on its military. Compare that to what is spent on Holocaust survivors. What a ruse the Holocaust has become. Holocaust survivors 'in poverty' A Holocaust survivor's support group has said 40% of survivors in Israel are living below the poverty line, Israel Radio has reported. Most of the 170,000 people affected emigrated from the former Soviet bloc and now get little financial help. Zeev Factor, the chairman of the Holocaust Survivors' Welfare Fund, says many survivors get no pensions and have to live off $390 a month. Israel officially sets the poverty line at an income of $400 a month. Mr Factor said his fund, which provides welfare and medical assistance, was "running out" of money. "These people live off 1,800 shekels ($390) [per month] and are today extremely old and many of them in precarious health condition," he told Israel Radio. Inequality Holocaust survivors aged over 65 who arrived in Israel in the last 10 years from eastern Europe have found themselves lacking financial support from both their homelands and Israel, Mr Factor said. He added that survivors who arrived in Israel after World War II from the West can be entitled to pensions from international Jewish organisations and the Israeli, German, Austrian and Swiss governments. Israel's parliament approved a bill earlier this month that would give survivors an extra $11 million of support for rent and prescription medicines. However, the bill will only become law if it passes two more readings scheduled to be held after March's general election. The Israeli finance ministry says it provides $326 million of support to Holocaust survivors every year. Source
  12. ^ Indeed. The showdown is imminent. Though US hegemony has long been hated in the world, still, the US has a golden opportunity to right the wrongs of the past and of the now. It has, well within its hands, the ability to forge a new world order. One were it does not arm itself to the teeth and force others to do the same. One were double standards (such as in Palestine) do not go unaddressed for decades. One were income disparity between rich and poor nations creates massive, often deadly, migrations of peoples. Alas, the myopia that is an empire will prevent it from creating such an order. My prediction is that before this empire goes down, we will have seen death and destruction we never thought were possible.
  13. ^ As if China gives a flying fcuk about US sanctions imposed on anyone. They now have the economic and military capacity to force the US to behave. It would be nice if all the countries now squeezed by the US would sign free trade agreements with China. If I were they, I'd go for the new empire on the block rather than the old, decrepit and dying one.

Originally posted by xiinfaniin: Though pondering the signs of Allah and reflecting the faith in His presence are encouraged by the Precious book, there is, however, a world of difference between a firm faith and ceaseless inquiry that originates from a doubtful mind. Reflection done by the former is a good deed while the latter is a futile exercise. That statement echoes my own sentiments. The risk in lack of enquiry of which I spoke is that one may become dogmatically shallow or worse, fall in the abyss of apocryphal faith (may Allah save us from that). Once someone has faith in the Almighty, he or she should have no reluctance or fear of examining worldy objects. Whether the universe originated from an explosion and is 15 billion years old is a matter yet to be decided by scientific enquiry. That confirmation, if or when it occurs, should hardly matter to those who understand (and believe) it was Allah's will that made it so.
  15. ^ Here's the point of the piece atheer: The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire We don’t need no water let the m*therf*cker burn Burn m*therf*cker burn Now repeat The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire We don’t need no water let the m*therf*cker burn Burn m*therf*cker burn

I never quite understood why some women try so hard to remain young and pretty, while they know the inevitability of aging, and that some day they'll all be haggy and ugly. It is probably for the same lame reasons why men (of all ages) would transplant hair, wear a ridiculous toupees or even spray dark paint on their heads. It's called vanity atheer and women do not have a monopoly on it. I've seen men walk in the wind only to have a 4-inch wave of hair stand on their head from that cheap toupee they're wearing. It's not that people don't know they're bald, it's that they themselves have difficulty believing they've grown bald. And that's just one example.
  18. The ability, indeed the gift, to question, to think about, to reflect upon and to ponder is what separates us from animals. It is the duty of every muslim to analyze and reason over the signs Allah has given us. These signs were specifically sent to those who think and reflect. Removing this thought process is an invitation to being led astray and not just out of malice but out of sheer ignorance and lack of thought.
  19. ^ Heh. That line is actually not mine but borrowed (with minor modification) from my favorite movie, The Devil's Advocate with Al Pacino. I am hereby giving the proper credit.
  20. ^ Don't think these ayeeyos are there for show. They're the first and second line of defense. They're there to sift through the applicants and weed out the undesirables. Don't be fooled by their loving granny demeanour and soft speech. Treat them as the enemy that they are and use Ninja tactics on them. And keep your eye on the prize at all times.
  21. ^ So Geishas are the look but don't touch, touch but don't taste and taste but don't swallow (no bun intended ) type of hookers, eh?
  22. Originally posted by Hitlerette*: Castro, yep – I know of them – and hopefully I will find a way to sneak into the family tree – so far, I have succeeded in befriending the ayeeyo That's great atheer. And while you work your way down (or up) the family tree, let me remind you of an old Somali adage. Don't let yours be a case of "farsamo xumo, futada cankeeday ku goysaa ". I think its equivalent in English is "all that glitters is not gold". P.S. I know the two proverbs have no relationship whatsoever, but I just love the Somali one.
  23. ^ Well, it's hard to believe because of the volume that must be invovled to clear (i.e. profit) $10,000 a night. This means your "friend", or whomever you're using as an example, is no street corner pusher. He must be running a moderate to large scale production and/or distribution business with many pushers in his employ, none of which, by the way, could make that much alone. And business must really be booming and competition non-existent for a single dealer to make that much in profit every night. It's not that it's impossible. It's just improbable. But more importantly, such a person cannot act as a model of entrepreneurial spirit. He or she is an example of a failed member of society.
  24. ^ Saaxib STOIC, I'm afraid to ask what this analogy with the pyjamas means. Seriously though, Geisha are prostitutes and I find it very interesting they enjoy an "honor" of sorts that non Japanese hookers seem to miss out on.
