He is now teaching and lecturing across the United States and Canada, while conducting research and writing in Islamic studies and related fields. Dr Abd-Allah recently completed a biography of Mohammed Webb (d. 1916), who was one of the most significant early American converts to Islam, which has been recently published in the UK by Oxford University Press and is titled “A Muslim in Victorian America: The Story of Alexander Russell Webbâ€. Dr. Abd-Allah is presently completing a second work entitled “Roots of Islam in America: A Survey of Muslim Presence in the New World from Earliest Evidence until 1965â€. Embracing Islam in 1970, Dr Abd-Allah completed his doctorate at the University of Chicago in 1978. From 1977 until 1982, he taught at the Universities of Windsor (Ontario), Temple, and Michigan. In 1982, he left America to teach Arabic in Spain. Two years later, he was appointed to the Department of Islamic Studies at King Abdul-Aziz University in Jeddah, where he taught (in Arabic) Islamic studies and comparative religions until 2000. During his years abroad, Dr. Abd-Allah had the privilege of studying with a number of traditional Islamic scholars.   10. I know few offenders...men or women I think belching to be highly offensive ...not to mention gross. Unless you're in the presence of loved ones who love you no matter what, don't do it in my presence. Sometimes, I lose my appetite.
  11. Assalamu Alaikum, I've noticed that more and more muslims are becoming inspired and welcoming the arts into their lives. I don't know where we got the notion that a good form of music, in this case nasheeds, is prohibited in Islam. Alhamdulilah, that's all changing. Yusuf Islam, a.k.a. Cat Stevens has picked up his guitar....Alhamdulilah. I'll post more on this topic in a future date Insha Allah.

  15. The West African music I always hear in my friend's store (Half Mali/Senegalese) is soothing and enchanting to the soul. Now, I can't differentiate Mali music from Seneg..... Baba Maal comes to mind (barely miss the annual African festival in my city). I have to talk to my friend ..but I'm interested in west african drumming only...y'all know of any group/CD that's soley drumming??
  16. Dear Christian, The legal rulings regarding the inter-marriage between muslims and non-muslims is very clear in Islam. Please read this link : Christian-Muslim Marriage I can understand your hesitations to convert to Islam. I'd encourage you to read more about Islam and talk to knowledgable muslims as much as you can. Also, Islam sets limits between muslim men and women who are not married: What is the proper gender-interaction in Islam? Hope that helps, feel free to ask more questions!
  17. You know what's interesting is the method of learning the Quran using the lawha ('loox' in somali) I know the Quran schools back home taught kids using this woodboard! Also, the group gathering is called 'subcis' in somali. So I began wondering if West Africa influenced somalis in the way they transmitted the deen? Facinating article!
