Muhammad ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that there was once a great scholar and 'abid amongst Bani Isra'il who loved his wife dearly. When she passed away, he was so grieved that he locked his door and abstained from meeting and conversing with people. A woman from Bani Isra'il heard about this so she went to him. She informed those who were guarding the entrance to his house that she wanted to ask him about a point of jurisprudence and that she must ask him directly. Saying this, she sat down stubbornly by the door. The person was informed of this and eventually permitted her to enter. She said, "I want to ask you about a mas'ala." He replied, "Go ahead," so she continued, "I have a neighbor from whom I borrowed some jewellery. I have been wearing it for quite some time now. Thereafter, my neighbor sent a person asking for her jewellery. The question I want to ask you is regarding whether I have to give it back to her." The scholar replied, "Yes, you must give it back to her." The woman answered, "But the jewels were with me for a very long time. How can I give it back?" The scholar replied, "In such a case, you should give it even more happily because it was out of her kindness that she allowed you to use it for such a long time." When he said this, the woman replied, "May Allah have mercy on you. Why then are you so grieved? Allah had loaned you something, and when He wished, He took it back. And all belongs to Him." Upon hearing this, the 'alim understood. (from Bahishti Zewar)
  3. as-Salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatAllahi, The following was transcribed by Brother Mujib Tahir of California. It is excerpted from a lecture of Shaykh AbdulHakim Murad (TJ Winter) of the UK. The audio excerpt can be heard here: http://www.ihyaproductions.com/tape_catalogue/descriptions/ahm-111.htm "What is the title of Sayyidina Muhammad, sallal laahu `alayhi wa sallam [Allah bless him and grant him peace]? It's Habibullah, the Beloved of Allah – and this is an indication of his state, through this taraqqi, this process of growth, of inward education, to this great state of mahabba [love], which is the condition of the wali [saint]. Because the Qur'an itself says Inna awliya'Allahi la khawfun `alayhim wa la hum yahzanun `Allah's awliya' [friends], no fear shall come upon them, neither shall they grieve.' You've heard this definition before, that is what a wali [saint] is. And it's the opposite of our condition as modern Muslims; we're full of fear and we're full of grief; we're terrified of America and we're terrified of the Israelis and the Indian government, and the economic system and global debt and God knows what. It's not the way of the Sahaba [Companions], and it's not the way of the wali – he is not afraid, except of Allah subhana wa ta`Ala, because he knows Allah is the One with the Names, the One Who is the True Agent in the cosmos. But to the extent that we are uneducated, we forget that. We move away from Khilafa [vicegerency], we move away from wilaya [sainthood] and we get scared. Because we think that those things truly have the power to hurt us. [This is] not the case – no khawf [fear]. One of the early Sufis, al-Allama ash-Shibli, radiAllahu `anhu [Allah be well pleased with him], was once by an unjust ruler thrown to the lions – to the extent that a lion took his head in the lion's mouth. It was Allah's decree that the saint should be saved, and afterwards he was asked, "Ya Shaykh [O' Master], what were you thinking about when your head was in the lion's mouth?" And he said, "I was trying to remember the Shari`a ruling on the purity of lion saliva." That's what he was worried about! He was worried about continuing to follow the Shari`a to the end; and Allah would look after everything else. That was his fear! His fear was only for violating the Shari`a, not for any phenomenon in Allah's creation. If Allah wished to take his soul, that was Allah's decree, and he had rida – a state of serene trust and acceptance of Allah's decree, which used to be the watchword of the Muslim world. Remember the old idea of oriental repose, fatalism? – those not quiet accurate characterizations that 19th century travelers applied to our societies. We *were* the people of tawakkul [reliance on Allah] and the people of rida [contentment]; we were not afraid of anything except Allah subhana wa ta`Ala. Wa la hum yahzanun `and they don't grieve', in other words, in their lack of khawf they declare their knowledge that the future is in Allah's hands. Khawf is about what might happen, it's about the future. Wa la hum yahzanun and they declare, by not grieving, that the past is in Allah's hands as well. Because huzm is for what has happened in the past. So future and past, it's all in Allah's hands, because he is the Omnipotent – we believe in an Omnipotent God. And that's the state of the wali [saint]; he knows everything is in good hands. Nowadays, Allahu `alam [Allah knows], hardly any umma seems to have more khawf and more huzm that the umma of Islam. This kind of panic seems to have set in, and what is ganging up on us [it is hard to understand what he says here, it almost sounds like "everyone is ganging up on us", but I've used what is ganging..]. Paranoia! This has nothing to do with the spirit of Islam and it's an impugning of the very principle of tawhid [unity of Allah]. We should be the umma of tawakkul [reliance on Allah]. Of all peoples, we should know that history is in good hands and that we have nothing to worry about. =*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=* We have nothing to worry about – except Allah subhana wa ta`Ala and our relationship with Him. =*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=* We should look to our tahara [purity], we should look to our `ibada [worship], we should look to fulfilling all of those aspects of Shari`a which it is humanly possible for us to operationalize in our context. But we should not be worrying about global Masonic conspiracies and threats of this, that, and the other kind. Because that's… [i was not able to understand what he said here], that's part of the zulumat, the shadows. It has no reality, it has no energy, nor inertia of its own whatsoever. Dynamic principle of the cosmos is exclusively Divine Providence. Amazing, that we should have lost sight of this. That the umma is becoming an umma of jaza', of panic! Allah's Blessings and Peace are upon Prophet, his Family, and all of his Companions
  4. What's my personal rxn to this unjust war? OUTRAGED mad:   Please continue your duas for the innocent Iraqis (muslims &non-muslims) that this nightmare stops immediately.
  5. Two strangers are sitting in adjacent seats in an airplane. The guy says to the woman, "Let's talk. I hear that the flight will go faster if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger." The woman, who had just opened a good book, closes it slowly, takes off her glasses and asks, "What would you like to discuss?" The guy says, "Oh, I don't know; how about nuclear power?" The woman says, "OK, that could make for some pretty interesting conversation. But let me ask you a question first: A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff. But the deer excretes pellets; the cow, big patties; and the horse, clumps of dried grass. Why is that?" The guy says, "I don't know." Putting her glasses back on, the woman says, "Oh? Well, then, do you really think you're qualified to discuss nuclear power when you don't know shit?"
  6. I usually wear Coolwater or TommyGirl. My absolute favorite is J'adore by Christian Dior. KickAssPrincess, I believe its xaram if you leave a trail behind you..lol...n' you notice men following you! I don't over use it.

  8. Daaaammmmnnnnnnn!!!! hehehehehehehe.
  9. What can I say,its a thought provoking article!
  10. I've been watching CNN for an hour this morning, no such thing was mentioned. What was funny was when CNN asked for comments from Americans and this old lady remarked "I'm old and ready to go,but what about these young people, BUSH is ***** insane!!!"
  11. Ofcourse he's been dealt with severely. 12 years?? Goodness. Rapists get alot less sentence than that. Opinionated, you don't think it's a bit too much? If supposedly he said all those things, shouldn't he had be more aware of Britain's constitution about these sort of things b4 preaching?
  12. MUAH...thanks girl! I will always love my former city. You know what's actually fun, inviting a friend who's never been to Toronto. Trust me you will soon find out that there are alot of unexplored territories that you n' your friend will enjoy. My friend loved it last year. It's been over 7 months since I've last been to T.O. so amma be there this week since we're on Spring Break.I miss it soo much. I've got places to go, pple to see.
  13. I'm sorry I couldn't read all of your responses on this very important, relevant and HOT topic. Partly b'coz I just got in from work. Ameenah my dear sista, firstly Iska waran? Good I hope. "How do we the average Muslims deal with such a bizarre and confounding situation?" As others have previously mentioned, I truly believe acquiring more knowlege about the deen will help better comprehend what's going on in the muslim world. That said, I'm angry that I don't see many Imaams, Sheikhs, or Muslim activists questioning the actions of these few extremists who seemed to have hurt the Ummah more than help. I liked what Shyhem stated: "Most of us the muslims have let our emotions led us to hasty generalization and not to mention poor judgements" Sure we're frustrated by the fact that we're (muslims)constantly being bashed by the media while our brothers n' sisters from many parts of the globe are suffering at the hands of the Kufars. Why is it that we pick n' choose to senstionalize certain countries or regions in the muslim world n' ignore others, ex. Palestine over Kashmir,Bosnia, or even the drought in Ethiopia. Islam knows no color or race and we should equally care about ALL about our bro/sis. If we want to start caring about our "image" then we ought do something about it. Don't get emotional over it and rot hating America 4 life. What am saying is start questioning about intentions towards the general Ummah. Do you get angry everytime Islam/muslims are lashed out at b'coz you feel humiliated or do you really care enough to make a difference as a muslim by stopping the ignorance that exists within the community. Please excuse any run-on sentences or typos, maybe I shouldn't be writing when am this tired. But I couldn't resist
  14. LOL@ MMA, I guess it worked for you in the past huh. I agree with Nafisa, communication baby girl, communication is the best way!!! best of luck.
  15. Once I watched a program on PBS about the rise of the Islamic civilization. They mentioned that it was the muslims in Bagdad (during the Ottomon empire) that first translated much of Greek philosophers work from Latin to Arabic and eventually to English for the Europeans. Aint that something!! Honestly, I'm particularly interested in Islamic philosophy and I'll be looking into it very soon. I wish I could participate in this discussion but I'm afraid am illiterate in this department. Recently though, I've found Sophie's World in my apartment and I guess its a beginner's guide to philosophy. I'll get back to you when I do finish.
  16. Deep stuff. For a moment, I thought you've retired from posting Good to see you back!

My special account after all these yrs is GONE!! R.I.P. So this year, I think I might give my school account a try since their capacity is close to infinity DeadlyVision: Take a look around here, there's enough serious topics you can participate in or even create. Ottawa

SweetGal, There are many religious sisters in Ottawa. I know quite a few of them though they're are older than you. Here are tips on how to meet them: 1) Go to the mosques, especially on fridays 2) Participate in Halaqas, which is a gathering for the purpose of learning the deen and it's also a discussion group. 3) Attend Islamic conferences. One year I've been to one in Ottawa, and Mashallah you will not believe how many young, cool, intelligent, religious sisters I've met. N' they were Somalis!!! There's nothing wrong with having Black, Chinese, Indian friends as long they aren't trying to change you or take you away from the right path. But I encourage you to always surround yourself with positive and spiritually conscious friends. It makes all the difference. Good luck sis.
  19. Shujui.. Very interesting article. I started reading n' realized that am late to class. ....To be continued........I'll comment later.

  21. KoolKat, If more people are opposed to this inevitable war (I hope it's otherwise), then atleast we can be sure that he doesn't get elected next term. Anyway, there are alot more ways to help out then attending rallies. Educating the public about this possible war is more effective. Ie. organizing workshops about US foreign policies in schools or inviting a prominent guest speaker are ways our school is taking action.
  22. MashaAllah Akhi, your poetic ability is marvelous. I especially loved the poem "Faith". Waiting for more......
