Originally posted by disillusioned-N-despondent: now I can flirt with the best of them, but only when it comes to close friends and cousins. Basically, guys I trust and feel comfortable with, otherwise no can do. Dont want to be accused of being a tease. I see you're taking the safe route eh? Btw, there are many ways of flirting..ie. body language. Ever heard of the staring game? Scenerio setting: Coffee shop. You pretty much stare at the guy when he's not looking, and when he does notice and looks your way, u hold his gaze for few seconds (pretending like he's caught you), and turn away. Never tried it....read it in some magazine, lol.

We're living in amazing times... Thnks for the poetry guys!

Actually, most Somali words dropped here are conversational words which are not difficult to comprehend. Now when it comes to reading poetry, articles and such..I employ the help of my parents...reason being that Somali vocabulary is deeply rooted, and unfortunately its hardly ever used in conversations. Therefore, I'm in the same boat as Athena, Nomad, and others. Btw, I always knew how to read somali but actually practiced writing it via MSN mssger.

Ilaahi ha uu naxariisto. Well in my neck of the woods, yesterday a woman and her 4 children (non-somalis) were murdered at the hands of her boyfriend with a metal pipe...Subxanallah. I was shocked to the core to point of tears. One thing that struck me from the news report was the fact the woman was in an abusive relationship and she kept taking him back over the years. She never filed a single report agaist him. What I want to know is....why women ignore the signs before it escalates to point of murder? It was all there b4, the fact that he's controlling, whether he's the jealous type...etc. My philosophy...u hit me once and you're out the door. No ifs or buts.

Thierry, isnt that borderline stalking? contrary to popular myth, girls say NO for a reason, and they mean it, also persistence doesnt pay off, makes u look like a lunatic. So next time u hear it, dust urself off, and find other prey. Somali brothas just don't GET IT. I know am not that cultural...maybe there's a song or something out there that re-enforces this idea of persistance will pay

tru nomad....hehe..wlc to the site. Are u talking about that particular person who likes to eat malawax/canjeelo with hotdog and ketchup..lol. I don't wanna bust this person too!

LST, true brotha. These racist attitudes among us have long existed against our own people...iska baa daa anjabi. I say..forget about the somali elders (they're a lost cause)start with your peers and circle of friends. I always find myself getting into debates about racism with somali youths.....not only is it against Islam but the attitude itself has no basis. If you're living in the US, I suggest you pick up a book about African American history...I'm not talking about bio. of Malcom X...seriously, it was an eye opener for me! Nafisa, lol@mom, you know what..everytime I talk to ayeeyo she advices " maandhay haa ii keenin anjani" What can u say to that..lol. On the issue of marrying outside ur ethnic culture...I say Illaahi hadu kuu beenayey...what more do u need? You'll never satisfy humans!

Rahma...sometimes I ask myself how in the world I finished my prayer...b'coz my attention was somewhere else ie.running late for class/work, or sleepy during fajr. It's a constant battle with Nafs& Satan. I try to think about every meaning of what I utter during salah and mean it while I say it. That way, I finish my prayer truly satisfied and feeling closer to Allah....not feeling like "aahh I got over with my obligatory salah" Nur, as always, Jazakallah.

We are living in extraordinary times....I'm afraid Manji and the likes won't be the end of it. But I don't care for those bashers of Islam, whether they're supposedly muslim or not. What matters is that we focus our attention to our neglected communities and start educating our youngsters about our deen. Fact is, its not them who are making our lives miserable...its how far we are from the true essence of Islam. You already see muslims conforming...not wanting 2 be associated with muslims or Islam. Appreciate the article Baashi.

Shnomad, runtaa sheegtay. btw, are u the long lost friend I've been searching for? Reminds of this nuthead who just cut to the chase n' said " May I have ur waalid's(father) #?" and I asked, " ummmm, don't u have to ask me 1st b4 u even begin to inquire about my dad" He was a perfect stranger in a bus  My q to the brothas, what century is u from? lol.

Hibo I'm very proud of you for being the fearless Nomad that you are and getting involved in helping those who really need it the most.....women. Anyway, I hear that there are several NGO's still operating in Somalia. I know one family friend is involved in the FGM project back home. What an inspiration. The change will ultimately come from us, not some foreign orgs. (though we don't mind using their $ to get our work done ) Thnkz for sharing.

Hey KoolKat, ii waran gabar? Listen abaayo, a loan is a loan...you gonna have to make plans to pay them b4 u die. Otherwise you're gonna have to answer to the Most High....and no..I aint talking about the federal government. Besides, credit is everything... sometimes you can't rent a flat without them checking ur credit. Also Khayr, brotha did you think when we're taught not to lie...that the government was an exemption? Come on now....no1 is worth lying to...by compromising our character. You already know its dambi. I liked Xena's ideas, but I think there are better opportunities available in the States in terms of paying back your loan....ie. Workstudy or even working full-time during the summers. However whereever you may be at shouldn't excuse you from making plans not only to pay back but to actually to start paying. So my dear Shaabella, don't despair. You've chosen a good profession and as soon as you graduate you'll have a job waiting for u. By thinking about this shows that you actually do care about your future. You'll find a way
