I was suprised to see a big beautiful hospital, where foreign doctors from Europe worked at That is SOS children's hospital, I guess. It is a beautiful hospital, but compared to the way it was 13 years ago, you will be shocked. Although, you see guns, most of the militia are now paid security-guards for a building, or some other business That is right. They are busy. I was surprised too while there. Tribes from all over Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia...etc all side by side, doing business and politics, as usual That is true, and I didn't have expected to see some members of some qabiils in there living freely. Either ask anyone who has just returned from Xamar, or visit it for yourself, and you'll either hear about, or experience a completely different Xamar Yes, Xamar looks completely different. Of course, the other way around. And yes, I was there, seeing on my bare eyes. I never once heard a single gun shot fired in the city That is also true. People in the city have dishes set up at their homes, and are upto date with events around the world This is so true! I was there when Bakhdaad fell and immediately after I heard the news, I turned the TV on, there Al Jazeera reporting live about Sadaam's statue collapsing; then switched to CNN, there the netword was misfiring its propagandic images of Sadaam's effigy falling. Turned the darn thing off, wished there was no TV as I expected. One night the kids were watching American TV shows Dark Angel and ER. I was surprised they watch new American shows in Xamar now! Overall, Xamar is a lot more peaceful than I thought too. However, its citizens yearn a lot more peace, and to be it a city that deserves to be a capital city--just the way it was. Those so-called warlords had caged and curbed its citizens and curved up the city as they please. Again that as much as I love and adore it, objectivity would do the justice of reporting. Jaaw.

Since there is too many topics regarding Soomaaliland in every God-given forum or website by Soomaalis on the Internet, I would like to ask you or anybody who wants to break into pieces the nation of Soomaaliya this question {actually, questions} for once and all: Is Somaliland a nation based on qabiil? Or not? If it is, how can a nation based on qabiil be called "dhulkii Soomaalida" {that is my understanding of the literal meaning of Somaliland} and then deport other so-called "foreign" Soomaalis from other regions that reside there. If it is a nation based not on qabiil, I can bet you and every person almost 99.9999% that supports Soomaaliland are originated from one qabiil. If it was called the qabiil's name or "qabiilland," these questions shouldn't be asked now. I can further more bet on my life whose qabiil you belong. I am saying this because if Soomaaliland is based not on qabiil, then why it is easy to know only certain "elements" of one qabiil support it {not all members of this qabiil support secession, mind you, and that is rightly applauded}. I am asking these questions because some people are confused about what "Soomaali" stands and what their qabiil is. The Soomaali word is qabiil-less and cannot be exclusive; cannot be trademarked or registered. It all belongs to all Soomaalis--regardless of anything they are associated. Any nation that bears a Soomaali word should not and must not deport a Soomaali. ________________ P.S.: Don't start Soomaali is an ethnic and "Somalilander" is nationality formula. The probable supporters: Reer Buntilaand {Why: The double "S and S" regions are on board; the state's border goes to all the way to Gaalkacyo town itself, ...} Reer Maay-speaking {Why: This is what they were seeking since the Talyaanis left from the South} Most of those who associate themselves with the now defunct USC party {Why: They will have the largest state, at least from the appearance of the map} Reer Sool, Sanaag iyo nawaaxigeeda {Why: This is what they wanted since the civil war; in a nutshell: make this happen or forget the whole thing} The possible rejecters: Reer Soomaalileen {Why: No full Sanaag, no Sool--No nothing} Dooxadda Jubba {Why: Without much Shabeelada Hoose, Jubbooyinka, etc, heck noo} Reer Gedo {Why: Baardheere, Luuq and Doolow are not part of Jubba--read Gedo--state} SPM/Gabyoow, SPM/Cumar Jees {Why: Bu'aale, Jilib, etc aren't part of Jubba state} Some factions who rule Hiiraan region {Why: Beledweyne is NOT the capital on supposedly Hamar state} And then comes unexpectedly what we call the "minority" groups, some who rightly own a lot of Shabeeloyinka estates, towns and cities. Anyway, as pathetic and poignant as it may seem, we Soomaalis are accustomed to situations like this. This is not the first time something like this happened. When Soomaalis are mad with one another, situations like this happen. It happened in Xamar in 1991/92 when USC tried to cleanse Xamar from some circles of Soomaalis from their rightful homes, some innocent folks. It happened in Baydhabo in 1991 kicking Cumar Jees and his "people" {read tribe}, some innocent, from Baay and Bakool regions. It is still happening in those divided cities of Beled Weyne and Gaalkacyo, where purely one clan lives one side, while their "nemesis" live the other side, not allowing themselves to mix freely. That is how dismal and pathetic situation we are in. Sad, yes. However, I might say this is the first time without any justification save the "you-are-not-from-this-region" rhetoric some Soomaalis had been kicked from other Soomaali lands. But what happened to our own cultured Soomaali clothing? Whatever happened to garbasaar, shaash, qamaar, sifaleeti, guntiino, garees, shaalka naagaha, baati, etc. What happened? Were they "un-Islamic" clothes? A lady who wears garbasaar with shaash or sifaleeti is as modest to me as any jilbaab-wearing woman, honestly. And plus, it is "our" culture. Since when we shunned a sifaleeti with garbasaar and substituted it with jilbaab. My God, what happened? Or is that we embraced Islam on the late 1980s {when jilbaab penetrated on the mainstream of Soomaali culture}? What did our mothers/aunts use to wear before late '80s was certainly in some aspects of Islam. Yes, some might have been un-Islamic practices, but garbasaar was certainly within Islamic frame-point. Yes, it is a personal choice, however some circles believe strongly that garbasaar is not Islamic "enough" but jilbaab is. Give me a freakin' break. To be honest with you all, when I see a Soomaali lady wearing garbasaar {not the fashionable one with dirac-matching, save that for aroos} with of course her sifaleeti covering her hair makes my Soomaalihood proud. A lot prouder than a jilbaab-wearing woman. Certainly our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters were not wrong by wearing garbasaaro. Alas, it is unfortunate that we shunned our Islamic culture with "other" Islamic cultures. And don't start with me Arabic-style xijaab. Yes, this Arabic-style xijaab can be convenient to those who live in Western countries, however since when it became the "official" xijaab? All those sisters who live in the West wear that kind of xijaab thinking it is the correct one "only." Preserve the Islamic Soomaali culture, which aren't that many. What really makes this frenzy get a lot of ire from me personally is that Suuriya did this dirty business of torturing this person only to please the American officials {whom under some so-called international law cannot torture any person on their soil}. What is more worse than to please Bush regime, which doesn't recognize the Syrian regime themselves, by tormenting a fellow Muslim, Carab citizen with absolutely no evidence relating him to any group whatsoever. And what further makes ironic is that he wasn't directly deported to Suuriya, but Jordan was transit gateway. The Bush regime didn't deport him directly to Syria because they don't deal directly with the officials from government of Syria. If it weren't his wife, who worked tirelessly to bring her husband back to Canada; if it weren't Thomas Walkom, an excellent columinist from the Toronto Star; and if it weren't some federal NDP officials, Maher Arar would have remained today in that "grave" cell he lived during his imprisonment in Suuriya. Thank God he is safe and with his family now. __________________ P.S., I am having second thoughts travelling to U.S. by air because this Canadian passport of mine has several visas from Kenya, Emirates and other European countries which I am afraid the dim-witted officials manning the immigration checkpoints may give you hard time.   24. Salaan... This reminds me to a story this barbiyeeri guy was telling us the other day. Those two Jaamacis knew one another in back Soomaaliya and then war came, losing to have contact. Fortunately, both came to Tansaaniya. They met incidently in one crowded daylight at a suuq in Dara-Salaam. One was called Burhaan. When both saw one another, the other called Burhaan from distance, shouting, "Waa kuma...waa kuma...!" {just imagine how a typical Jaamac shouts} To the astonishment of Tanzanian folks who were already surprised, Burhaan responded "Waa Burhaan*!" They started hugging. When I was younger I couldn't stand with my "fac" whenever they used to talk about futile, useless topics, such as banooni, basketball, about movies and everything ciyaal fac used to play, including kuun kuun, kadhimeey kadhim, anbali iyo wixii lamid ah. So, I always found myself with older people, having more interest with them than my ciyaal fac. And especially when it used to get topics about politics. I used to remember listening BBC Soomaali with older people and listening afterward their analysis and debates about the heated Soomaali politics.
