  2. Sizing up Somalia: a new offshore oil frontier in the making Somalia is one of the few remaining frontier oil and gas exploration territories and the Somalian federal government is promoting its advancement by launching its first ever offshore licensing round. We look at the latest developments. Since the late 60s, civil unrest has prohibited the exploitation of Somalia’s offshore oil and gas resources. Now, however, after several years of relative peace, the government is making a bid to attract foreign investment to develop the country’s oil and gas riches. In May, Somalia’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources launched its first offshore licensing round, featuring up to seven blocks that can be bid for between August 2020 and March 2021. According to seismic data processing company Spectrum, which acquired approximately 20,000 km of long-offset 2D seismic data offshore Somalia in 2015, there are strong indications of widespread distribution of good quality source rocks. Meanwhile, another subsurface data company, TGS, estimates un-risked resources for the Somali Basin could be around 30 billion barrels of oil. TGS has acquired more than 40,000 kilometres of 2D data, which covers the seven blocks on offer, Overall, the country, located in the Horn of Africa and bordered by Kenya and Ethiopia and close to Yemen, is a promising new frontier for oil exploration; it is not without its risks and challenges though. New activity Oil and gas exploration started in Somalia in the 1950/60s, with a total of 70 wells drilled, 80% of which were onshore. Many major companies, including ExxonMobil, BP, Texaco, and Shell, were active in the region at the time. In the 60s, before civil unrest stifled the sector, five discoveries were made but all were considered sub-commercial. Continue to read

  5. 133 Somalis repatriated out of Uganda A total of 133 Somali nationals were on Saturday repatriated out of Uganda to Mogadishu in Somalia after over three months stay due to suspension of flights because of COVID-19. The 133 are part of over 350 who have so far been evacuated by the Somali Government out of Uganda ever since the outbreak of the Coronavirus. Majority of these were Somali students studying in various universities in Uganda, while others included visitors, tourists and Somali businessmen and women. The first batch of the Somali citizens left Entebbe Airport on June 1, 2020, the second batch departed on June 18, 2020, and the third one left Entebbe aboard a chartered flight from Mogadishu on July 4, 2020. Speaking at Entebbe Airport on Saturday, the Somali Acting Ambassador to Uganda H.E Ali Mohamed expressed gratitude with the Somali Government for extending a helping hand towards supporting its nationals return back home to their families. "I would also on a similar note express my heartfelt thanks to the Ugandan government, President Museveni, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Internal Affairs, UPDF, Ministry of Works & Transport, Civil Aviation Authority and Ministry of Health for the clearance given to us," said Ali. He said getting clearance amidst this COVID-19 pandemic to specifically allow planes into Ugandan airspace to evacuate Somali citizens wasn't an easy affair. "All those leaving Uganda for Somalia have duly been checked and are negative of COVID-19. We thank the Ministry of Health for this," he said. Ali noted that the Somali Government through its Embassy in Kampala is still registering those Somalis whom the lockdown got in Kampala. "But our target was in numbers ranging between 300-400, so the remaining numbers are minimal," he said. The ambassador thanked the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Amb. Ahmed Issa Awad for tirelessly facilitating the repatriation process. The 133 flew out of Entebbe aboard Chartered flight at 9am on Saturday to Aden Abdulle International Airport in Mogadishu. Despite its challenge with security caused by the civil war, the Federal Government of Somalia through the leadership, of President Mohamed Abdullah Mohamed ‘Farmaajo' under the supervision of Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheire, the Head of the COVID-19 National Task Force has so far evacuated close to 3,000 Somalis from seven African countries and Asian states stuck due to the suspension of flights due to the Coronavirus. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Somalia, close to 3,000 Somali nationals have been flown in from India, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan, Kenya, Oman, Uganda, and South Sudan among many others. Nur Ali Abdi aged 80 years, one of those who returned home expressed happiness with the Somali Government. 7. Miraa traders decry denial of entry to Hargeisa-bound plane Miraa traders in the country are up in arms after Somalia turned back an aircraft transporting 13.6 tonnes of khat to Hargeisa, the capital of the breakaway Somaliland region. Nyambene Miraa Traders Association (Nyamita) Chairman Kimathi Munjuri said the plane was turned back on Saturday, despite having been cleared to make the trip. Mr Munjuri said the traders would lose Sh8 million if the khat is not delivered on time. “The miraa is valued at about Sh3 million, Sh2.5 million goes to transport and there are other logistical costs which cannot be refunded. We had approvals from the Somaliland Civil Aviation Authority and everything was going on well, until the aircraft entered Somalia’s airspace. The pilot was told that he was carrying illegal cargo,” Mr Munjuri said. Mr Munjuri complained about the slow pace at which the Foreign Affairs was addressing the trade stalemate with Somaliland. “We have even been trying to have the Somalia border reopened to facilitate trade but nothing seems to be moving. The ministries of Trade and Agriculture have been engaging the Foreign Affairs on various issues. All miraa trade issues seem to be stuck at Foreign Affairs,” he said. The move by Somalia was reportedly received with protests in Hargeisa by expectant miraa chewers. Hargeisa, a major consumer of Ethiopian khat, is experiencing a shortage of the stimulant due to ethnic unrest in the Oromia region for the last five days. According to Somalia-based news sites, the plane was denied entry due to the country’s air travel restrictions in a bid to contain the spread of Covid-19. Somalia banned miraa imports three months ago to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Despite Somaliland declaring unilateral independence in 1991, the issue of air traffic control is yet to be agreed on between Mogadishu and Hargeisa. ENGAGED IN TALKS The semi-autonomous state is currently engaged in talks with Somalia, mediated by Djibouti, to resolve long-standing differences. Air space control is one of the issues Somaliland wants solved in the talks that resumed late last month in Djibouti. Somaliland, withdrew all Covid-19 restrictions, including those on public gatherings and international flights, on June 23. The incident came a day after a delegation of Kenyan investors and government officials led by Suna East MP and National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohammed held talks with Somaliland President Muse Bihi at Hargeisa. In September 2017, Kenyan miraa traders also cashed in on khat shortage in Somaliland following disruption of the business by conflicts in Ethiopia’s Oromia and Somali regions. - Daily Nation
  8. Meru miraa traders say Somalia flights ban ruining their business Farmers who grow miraa varieties popular with the export market have decried harsh economic times following the suspension of international cargo flights into Somalia amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The farmers from lower lying parts of the Nyambene ranges In Meru County, particularly in Karama, Athiru, Kanjoo among others grow the ‘Grade’ or ‘Kiza’ variety which is exclusively meant for the Somalia market. According to the farmers, the variety is preferred for export due to its succulent trait that enables it to remain fresh after several hours of transportation. The variety is largely grown under irrigation. Led by Nyambene Miraa Sacco Chairman Moses Lichoro, the farmers from Kabuitu in Igembe Central called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to engage his Somalia counterpart Mohamed Abdullahi for the resumption of cargo flights. Mr Lichoro said farmers have run out of their savings after the ban, which is now in the third month, cut off their income. He said since their miraa variety has no market locally, they have been forced to prune their trees and occasionally sell small amounts to local traders. “We have drained our savings and now many farmers cannot afford a meal because we have nowhere to sell our miraa. The situation is dire and the President should move with speed to reopen the economy and engage our neighbours to allow cargo flights,” Mr Lichoro said. He said more than 50 workers were being engaged on his miraa farms daily before Covid-19 shut the economy. “Before the Covid-19 shutdown was declared, I would sell miraa worth more than Sh3 million every month. Over 50 people would earn wages from my farms but many of them are now jobless. Some of them are still relying on me for their daily subsistence. Life is too hard for us,” he said. SALES DOWN Mr Bernard Mwiti, a farmer, said he was making Sh500,000 in miraa sales three months ago but now he can hardly get Sh50,000. Ms Felicity Makena, another farmer, said the closure of the Somalia airspace has had a major negative effect on the economy in miraa growing areas. “We laud the President for the law that recognised miraa as a cash crop. Miraa is the primary source of income in Kabuitu but without a market, we will suffer. The President should move with speed to save the situation,” Ms Makena said. According to Mr Lichoro, Nyambene Miraa Sacco, which has 1,200 members, has hit its lending limit due to increased borrowing from cash-strapped farmers. Somalia closed its airspace and banned cargo flights apart from medical supplies, late March after recording its first Covid-19 case. The trade with Somalia was further complicated by suspension of local flights in the neighbouring country. Early June, the Somali government reportedly revoked the licences of two airlines for smuggling in miraa in the guise of medical supplies, as traders strived to beat the Covid-19 restrictions. According to Nyambene Miraa Traders Association, Somalia takes in about 50 tonnes of miraa daily valued at about Sh100 million during the peak season. - Daily Nation

  20. Gaambiya is just another Gini (Guinea) as you can remember from last year when jaad-addicted marqaan zombies filinkaas Gini na aqoonsan doonto loo shiday after poorly photoshopped images were posted online. Another utter fashil.
  21. And even Gaambiya of all countries, after bribing some poor xildhibaanno of theirs, refuted marqaan's idea of lobbying. GAMBIA’S FOREIGN MINISTER HAS TOLD GAMBIAN MPS, WHO ARE ADVOCATING FOR SOMALIlAND TO BE RECOGNIZED AS AN INDEPENDENT STATE TO BACK OFF! Some Gambian parliamentarians have been pushing and lobbying for the self-declared “Somaliland state” to be recognized as a sovereign state, Parliamentary questions fired to The Gambian Foreign Minister Momodou Tangara, by different MPS, on Wednesday, have revealed, Freedom Newspaper can report. Some of the MPS mainly from the United Democratic Party (UDP), had asked the Foreign Minister, if The Gambian government could spearhead the campaign for Somaliland to be recognized as an independent state, outside the recognized Federal Government of Somalia. But Foreign Minister Tangara warned that it would be irresponsible for The Gambian government to engage in such illegitimate diplomacy. He insists that the globally recognized country in Somalia, is the Federal Republic of Somalia. He added that both the African Union and the United Nations have recognized the Federal Government of Somalia. According to Tangara, it is dangerous for the MPS to advocate for such a diplomatic move. He has called on the MPS to avoid selling such an agenda. Somaliland is located in Somalia. It is a self-proclaimed independent state, which hasn’t been recognized by the international community. The territorial dispute has been been in existence for decades. He pointed out that the only recognize government that The Gambian government has recognized in Somalia, is the Federal Government of Somalia. He has implored on the MPS to be careful about the people that they are talking to and the agendas that they would bring in Parliament. Sedia Jatta, Member for Wuli West, had asked Tangara if Somaliland had been recognized by the African Union, and the Minister replied in the negative. Similar questions were asked by Suwaibou Touray, the member for Wuli East, but the Minister was unequivocal in his straightforward answers. He maintained that the Federal government of Somalia was the only recognized country in that state. According to the online search engine Wikipedia, “The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) (Somali: Dowladda Federaalka Soomaaliya, Arabic: حكومة الصومال الاتحادية‎) is the internationally recognised government of Somalia, and the first attempt to create a central government in Somalia since the collapse of the Somali Democratic Republic. It replaced the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia on 20 August 2012 with the adoption of the Constitution of Somalia.[1] It officially comprises the executive branch of government, with the parliament serving as the legislative branch. It is headed by the President of Somalia, to whom the Council of Ministers reports through the Prime Minister.[2]” One of the MPS notes that since the previous Jammeh government had lobbied for Taiwan to be recognized as an independent state at the United Nations, he sees no reason, why the current Barrow government should employ a similar diplomatic move for Somaliland. But Minister Tangara said the Taiwan issue was bad for The Gambia. He warned that history wouldn’t judge them fairly, if The Gambia should repeat the Taiwan’s situation. He said The Gambian should work side by side with the international community and cannot operate in isolation. Foreign Minister Tangara went as far as advising The Gambian MPS to visit the BBC website to study about the Somali state dispute issue before meddling into such a sensitive issue. “Some of you, who are French literate can visit the BBC French site, and you will learn first-hand about the Somali issue. There is also a BBC English page available,” he said. Tangara said the AU has tasked certain parties that have been assigned to handle the Somali issue. He says The Gambia cannot afford to meddle into the Somaliland issue. Xigasho
