Hajj cancelation due to COVID-19 hurting Somali farmers With the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, or hajj, canceled this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, the socio-economic lives of Somalis have been dealt a serious blow. Livestock accounts for almost 80% of Somali export earnings, providing nutrition and income to more than 60% of the population, according to a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization. “I have to sell my animals whenever I hear there is a market right now. COVID-19 has really affected us who used to export animals all the way to Saudi Arabia for Hajj,” livestock trader Cabdi Axmed told Anadolu Agency at an open-air Barwaaqo-sooraan market in Hargeisa, Somalia. He is part of routine cattle exporters of goats, sheep and camels in Somaliland and noted the cancelation of the annual pilgrimage left the entire Somali livestock industry at a crossroads. Many traders who have a surplus of animals reared for hajj are facing challenges. “I have sold hundreds of thousands of cattle to Saudi Arabia in my lifetime, I have never seen anything like this where there are no markets here locally in Somalia and abroad,” exporter CabdiRaxmaan Burhaan told Anadolu Agency. Annually, millions of heads of cattle are slaughtered during the hajj season to feed more than 10 million pilgrims from 185 nations who travel to Mecca. “To meet demand Saudi Arabia imports over 3 million head of cattle during the Hajj Season – almost one million imported from Sudan, Somalia and Djibouti,” according to a 2019 report by the Veterinary Medicine and Science. “Right now we are battling with not only the coronavirus but also, water scarcity and droughts, which are all killing our animals, if the markets in Saudi Arabia were open then most of the healthy animals could have been sold for Hajj and we wouldn’t have incurred losses,” said Axmed. Livestock traders spoke of “empty pockets” because of the coronavirus. “We are very disappointed spiritually as pilgrims because even I wanted to travel to Mecca, our economy, our country relies on Hajj, so many lives are going to be ruined … maybe even lost because of this," said Axmed. With nothing in the pockets, there is “no way to feed our families. None of these traders have anything. We were all relying on the market," he added. The Somali economy has benefitted from the export of sheep and goats to the Arabian peninsula, cementing its position as a global leader in the export of cattle. But COVID-19 has greatly affected the market and spelled doom for hundreds of thousands employed in the industry. "In 2010, a total of two million three hundred and fifty-two thousand (2.352M) sheep and goats were exported through the Berbera port (including from Ethiopian sources). Of this total, one million six hundred and twelve thousand (1.612M), equivalent to 69% of the sheep and goats population, were exported between September and November for the Hajj festivities," according to a report by the African Unions Inter African Bureau for Animal Resources. Turkey's Erdogan visits Hagia Sophia after reconversion to mosque Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan paid a surprise visit to Hagia Sophia just days before the first Muslim prayers will be held at the Istanbul landmark since it was reconverted to a mosque last week. In a quick visit billed as an inspection, Erdogan took stock of the conversion work, the president's office said on Sunday, providing images showing scaffolding inside the building. The Diyanet, the country's religious authority, said Christian icons would be curtained off and unlit "through appropriate means during prayer times". He said other mosaics of Jesus and other Christian figures did not pose an obstacle for Muslim prayers because they are not located in the direction of Qiblah. Culture and Tourism Ministry hands over some services at Hagia Sophia to Diyanet Turkey’s Culture and Tourism Ministry has handed over the management of some services at the Hagia Sophia to the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) after its conversion into a mosque from a museum late last week. “As it used to be, it will be open to domestic and foreign tourists. Moreover, with the order of our president, restoration works and budgets have been increased massively. We are speeding up restorations with very significant budgets,” Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said in a protocol ceremony. Ersoy and Diyanet head Ali Erbaş on July 16 signed a cooperation protocol on “Protection, Development, Promotion and Management Activities to be carried out in the Hagia Sophia Kebir Mosque Sheriff.” According to the protocol, religious services at the Hagia Sophia will be carried out by the Diyanet, and preservation activities will be carried out by the Culture and Tourism Ministry. Ersoy also stated that the Hagia Sophia will be open to tourists free of charge. The main principles for the protection of Hagia Sophia have been determined by the protocol, he said. “It has been once again signed that the preservation of the historical and cultural aesthetic values of the mosque will be realized,” Ersoy noted. “Religious services in the Hagia Sophia Mosque will be carried out by our Diyanet. Jawar Mohammed investigation allowed 13 more days A court in Lideta, Addis Ababa, allowed police on Thursday 13 more days to finalize an investigation on Jawar Mohammed, owner of Oromia Media Network and one of the leaders of Merera Gudina led Oromo Federalist Congress, according to a report by Ethiopian News Agency(ENA). Police told the Court about the role that Jawar had in the ethnic and religious-based “violence” (observers say it was an act of ethnic cleansing, not violence) in the Oromo region of Ethiopia soon after the killing of Ethiopian Singer Hachalu Hundessa in late June 2020. Oromo Regional State Police reported that 181 people have been killed in the Oromo region of Ethiopia, and firearms seized from a group that Jawar leads are illegal. Other sources report that the number of people killed in the attack is at least 240. Nearly three hundred are wounded, and hundreds of residential homes and businesses, mostly belonging to followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church were destroyed. Apart from having a role in what the police called “violence,” Jawar is being investigated in connection to the incident in the capital Addis Ababa in the days following the assassination of Hachalu Hundessa on June 29. Police told the court that a crowd that Jawar led forcefully tried to enter the Oromia region Prosperity Party office, with the coffin of Hachalu Hundessa, which led to the killing of one police force. A policeman was shot dead and three others wounded in the ensuing scuffle with the security forces. The court is told that the incident happened because of the order that Jawar Mohammed gave to his followers. The family and parents of Hachalu Hudessa wanted the body to be laid to rest in Ambo town, the birthplace of the singer. It is also said that 14 investigative teams are carrying out further investigation and additional evidence is being gathered. The government of Abiy Ahmed received widespread criticism for failing to hold him accountable for the loss of lives back then. Hagia Sophia will open outside prayer time, says Turkey Turkey’s Hagia Sophia could open to visitors outside prayer times and its Christian icons will remain, religious officials said on July 14, after a court ruling paved the way for it to become a mosque. The sixth-century Istanbul landmark’s museum status -- in place since 1934 -- was revoked on July 10 and control was handed to the religious authority, Diyanet. The decision sparked condemnation from Western governments, Russia and Christian leaders -- Pope Francis saying he was "very distressed". Hagia Sophia spent almost 1,000 years as a cathedral before being converted into a mosque in 1453 and later a museum. Diyanet said in a statement on July 14 that Christian icons in Hagia Sophia were "not an obstacle to the validity of the prayers". "The icons should be curtained and shaded through appropriate means during prayer times," it said. "There is no obstacle from a religious perspective to Hagia Sophia Mosque being open to visitors outside prayer times." In 2018, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recited a verse from Koran at the building. Erdoğan, who said the first Muslim prayers in Hagia Sophia would begin on July 24, has insisted the building will be open to all, including non-Muslims. Meanwhile, Turkey's Foreign Ministry said on July 14 that the Hagia Sophia mosque will be open to visitors of all religions, and anyone who wants to can visit this amazing building. After a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on Monday in Brussels, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said in regards to Hagia Sophia that nobody can interfere with Turkey's sovereign rights. Aksoy stressed that Hagia Sophia's status is an internal matter and is the property of Turkey. "Hagia Sophia will continue to embrace everyone with its new status, preserving the common cultural heritage of humanity," he said. Aksoy also emphasized that all parties are aware of Turkey's stance on the issue of the Eastern Mediterranean and the first step toward resolving the issue is to establish a cooperation mechanism for the fair sharing of hydrocarbon resources between the two peoples of the island of Cyprus. He added that there should be a resumption of dialogue channels with Turkey and that the tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean can only end through the adoption of such approaches by all parties. Aksoy stressed that Turkey had always been emphasizing on how there would not be a military solution to the crisis in Libya and said Turkey has consistently supported and contributed to all international efforts to revive the political process led and embraced by Libyans. He said if the EU wants to contribute to the peaceful resolution of the Libyan crisis, it should favor international legitimacy in line with the relevant decisions of the U.N. Security Council.
