Rome to name metro station after 'black partisan'
Miskiin-Macruuf-Aqiyaar posted a topic in Politics
Rome to name metro station after 'black partisan' Rome votes to name future Amba Aradam metro stop after Giorgio Marincola. Rome city council has backed a motion to name a future Metro C station after the so-called partigiano nero or 'black partisan' Giorgio Marincola, instead of the planned name of Amba Aradam - Ipponio. "Rome is proudly anti-fascist," said mayor Virginia Raggi who declared that Marincola "sacrificed his life for the good of our country, his example keeps alive the memory of those who died for the liberation of Italy." Naming the station after Marincola is "a precise and important signal, especially in this historical period," said Raggi, adding: "Rome does not forget." The move comes six weeks after activists placed a banner over the Metro C works on Via dell'Amba Aradam which stated (in Italian) that no station should be named after "oppression", and signed in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The activists pledged to "dismantle the symbols of colonialism in the capital", targeting Rome streets that recall "shameful massacres carried out by Italian soldiers in Ethiopia, such as Via dell'Amba Aradam" (named after a battle which took place in Ethiopia in 1936). The activism in Rome followed the defacing of the Milan monument to Indro Montanelli, the prominent right-wing Italian journalist who bought a 12-year-old Eritrean girl as his wife while serving in the Second Italo-Ethiopian War in 1936. Who was Giorgio Marincola? Son of an Italian military officer and a Somali woman, Marincola was born in 1923 in what was then called Italian Somaliland. Contrary to the customs of the time, his father recognised both children (Giorgio had a younger sister called Isabella) and brought them to Italy where they were raised as Italian citizens. Marincola chose to contribute actively to the liberation of Italy in the Resistance period, participating in raids against the German military in the provinces of Rome and Viterbo, before parachuting into the northern province of Biella in 1944. In January 1945, Marincola was arrested by the Germans who tried to coerce him to make disparaging remarks against the resistance movement during a radio broadcast. However Marincola defied them by saying the exact opposite of what was written in his script, and was beaten while still on air. Italy: Rome mayor says no to Museum of Fascism After the Nazi SS abandoned its transit camp in Bolzano, where Marincola had been incarcerated, he made his way to join a partisan faction in the Fiemme Valley in the northern province of Trento. It was here that he was shot and killed, along with 25 other partisans and civilians, by retreating German soldiers at a checkpoint on 4 May 1945. In 1953 Marincola was posthumously awarded Italy’s highest military honour, the Medaglia d’Oro al Valor Militare, in recognition of his heroism and ultimate sacrifice. Xigasho -

Somali rights activist, Nobel Peace Prize nominee Dr. Hawa Abdi dies Prominent Somali human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Dr. Hawa Abdi has died. She was 73 years old. The exact date and cause of death of Abdi, popularly known as Mama Hawa, was not clearly established. Somali National Television (SNTV), however, reported that she died after a short illness. “The Ministry of Women HRD would like to send heartfelt condolences to the family & loved ones of Dr. Hawa Abdi. She was a fierce advocate for the rights of Somali women & children & dedicated her life to providing them with free healthcare. Her legacy will live on through the lives she changed,” the Ministry of Women and Human Rights Development tweeted. Abdi was famous for providing refuge for thousands of refugees using her own money and funds from donors in Somalia after founding the Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation, previously known as the Rural Health Development Organization. Abdi had studied medicine in Ukraine becoming one of Somalia’s first female gynecologists. She also went on to pursue law studies and worked for government hospitals in Somalia. In 1983, she opened a one-room clinic, on her family’s ancestral property, which over the years grew into a settlement which hosts tens of thousands of people, mainly women and children. The settlement in the Afgooye corridor, less than 15 miles from Mogadishu, includes a hospital, a school and a refugee camp. She famously stood her ground when Islamist militants laid siege to the settlement in 2010 and attempted to force her to shut it down. The militants ended up withdrawing from the compound following intense pressure from locals and rights groups and even apologised for the incident. In 2010, she was named one of Glamour magazine’s Women of the Year along with her daughters, Amina and Deqo. In 2012 she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and also won the BET’s Social Humanitarian Award. She is survived by her two daughters who also both became doctors. Xigasho

Turkey sets up first African military base in Somalia
Miskiin-Macruuf-Aqiyaar replied to Che -Guevara's topic in Politics
Afar sano ka dib: Turkey to train 1/3 of entire Somali military, envoy says Turkish-Somali relations have experienced great success over the years, and as part of their strategy of cooperation, Turkey has trained one-third of the Somali military forces. Turkey’s Ambassador to Mogadishu Mehmet Yılmaz told Anadolu Agency (AA) in remarks regarding bilateral relations, “When we look at the total numbers, Turkey will have trained one-third of Somali military forces, estimated to be around 15,000-16,000 personnel." In addition to military cooperation, Yılmaz also touched other areas of the countries' partnership, including health and education. The envoy underlined that historical relations between Turkey and Somalia have dated back many years but began to develop further after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s official visit to Mogadishu in 2011, when the country was struggling with a drought. “The visit by our president in 2011 to Somalia changed the fate of this country and took the bilateral relations to a new level,” Yılmaz said. He said Somalia "came under the spotlight" following President Erdoğan’s visit, noting that Somali sympathies toward Turkey and the Turkish people continue. Underlining that Erdoğan became the “only non-African leader to visit Somalia in 20 years,” the ambassador said Erdoğan’s message of solidarity was received with happiness by the Somali people. The ambassador added that Turkey has been continuing its support to Somalia with humanitarian aid according to the country's current needs, in the areas of health, education and security. 'Turkey’s military cooperation with Somalia of critical importance' Regarding military cooperation between the two countries, Yılmaz said Turkey's involvement in Somalia is of “critical importance.” “Turkey’s military cooperation with Somalia is of critical importance for this country. It contributes to Somalia’s security and its fight against terror,” he said. Stating that the international community’s biggest expectation from Somalia is the training of units that will ensure safety in the country, he noted the debates regarding the possible withdrawal of the African Union Mission in Somali's (AMISOM) forces from the country. “The withdrawal of AMISOM forces is being debated nowadays. In fact, the Somali Transition Plan, which was put into effect for directing the reconstruction efforts by the state, also envisions this. Within the scope of this, last year and this year the number of AMISOM troops have been decreased by 2,000. But the realization of the plan depends on the creation of Somali’s own local security forces,” Yılmaz said. “I can say with clarity that the country that provides the contribution of the highest quality is Turkey,” he said. Saying that sergeants and noncommissioned officers, who will make up the backbone of the Somali military, are being trained in the Camp TURKSOM, a defense university and a Turkish military base, the ambassador added that the training provided is high-quality commando training. “They first receive initial education in Somali. After that, they are sent to Isparta province (in Turkey) for commando training. After it ends, they are transferred to the Somali military,” Yılmaz said. Yılmaz added that Turkey managed to overcome and contain the coronavirus outbreak at the military base, all the while continuing to provide training. The ambassador said at least 1,000 special police officers will have been trained by Turkey. The envoy also touched upon the fight against the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) and said Somalia was the first country to end FETÖ activities after the July 15 failed coup attempt. Yılmaz also praised the Maarif Foundation’s efforts to bolster education in the African country. “Maarif did a very good job in Somalia. The foundation is making efforts to develop the two schools it has taken over here. These schools are in high demand. There is another school that Maarif has taken over in Somaliland too. Our teachers are successful,” he added. Yılmaz also rejected allegations that Turkey demanded soldiers from Somalia for its efforts to help Libya’s U.N.-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) in its fight against putschist Gen. Khalifa Haftar’s forces. “Social media is very powerful in Somalia. We are observing the efforts of some countries to manipulate the area for their interests. We see this as a targeted effort. Those allegations are not true. There is no truth to these claims,” the ambassador said. Xigasho -

How in the name of Eebbe did this dude become a leader of a country, let alone a major country like Mareykanka? And three and half years later, he still has his seat. Any other nation - major or minor - his matching orders would have long be given, if not overthrown forcibly. He has zero sense of self-awareness, empathy, sympathy with or any other soothing words a leader is expected to offer in times of crisis.

Uproar as Somalia turns back another miraa flight
Miskiin-Macruuf-Aqiyaar replied to Saalax's topic in Politics
Kenyan khat traders count losses as Somalia fails to lift ban Khat traders in Kenya have decried loss of business following the latest order by Somali Government to turn back a cargo plane carrying the product headed for Puntland. The Miraa Traders Association said Sunday the continued ban of the leafy stimulant by Somalia had occasioned them losses running into millions of dollars. International flights in Somalia resumed today but the federal government did not lift the ban on khat. A cargo plane carrying 11 tones of khat was ordered to return to Nairobi Sunday before it landed in Puntland. According to the association, the plane entered the Djibouti airspace by about 10am after flying over Ethiopia and was readying to land in Puntland when it was ordered to return. The association said the plane was carrying khat valued at $80,000. Somalia banned the importation of khat in March as part of its COVID19 response measures. Though Somaliland and Puntland have eased khat import restrictions, the Federal Government is yet to issue a directive on lifting the order. Kenya used to export up to 50 tones of khat valued at $2.5 million daily to Somalia prior to the ban. -

Uproar as Somalia turns back another miraa flight Miraa traders are up in arms after another plane ferrying 11 tonnes of the produce to Puntland in Somalia was turned back for allegedly violating Covid-19 restrictions. This is the second plane to be ordered back to Kenya by Mogadishu in a month. One ferrying 13 tonnes was denied entry early July. Nyambene Miraa Traders Association Chairman Kimathi Munjuri protested the move, saying the cargo plane had complied with all rules and regulatory frameworks. Mr Munjuri faulted the Kenyan government for what he termed as ignoring several pleas to engage the Somali government over the miraa trade suspension. TRADE SUSPENSION Somalia suspended Miraa trade in March as part of measures to contain the spread of Covid-19, and the resumption of international flights on August 3 has excluded non-essential goods. "The plane was carrying 11.3 tonnes of the highly valued Griid and Alele varieties of miraa to Puntland. It entered the Djibouti airspace by about 10am after flying over Ethiopia and was readying to land in Puntland when it was ordered back to Kenya. This is the second huge loss in one month," Mr Munjuri said. He said the traders lost about Sh8 million in the arborted trade deal. Mr Munjuri added: "It is painful because all the paperwork was right legally and procedurally." He decried an intensifying campaign by anti-khat crusaders to have miraa banned in Somalia. MIRAA TAXES The official added that there was a plot to hike miraa taxes once trade resumes in Somalia. "We already have information that Mogadishu plans an exorbitant hike in taxes on miraa to $5 (Sh538) per kilo, which will push khat way out of the reach of most consumers. We have not been involved in any talks about this by Mogadishu," he said. Marlier, Mr Munjuri decried the Foreign Affairs ministry’s slow pace of addressing the trade stalemate that has denied them access to the Somaliland market. “We have even been trying to have the Somalia border reopened to facilitate trade but nothing seems to be moving. The Trade and Agriculture ministries have been engaging their Foreign Affairs counterparts on various issues. All miraa trade issues seem to be stuck at the latter” he said. Anti-khat crusaders have taken advantage of the four-month trade suspension to argue their case on why the Somali government should ban it for good. Kenya has been exporting about 50 tonnes of khat to Somalia, valued at close to Sh25 million daily. Xigasho -

I know and very aware of his ugly actions during Xabashi occupation of Muqdisho in 2007, especially defending the indiscriminate shelling of suuqa Bakaaraha as a minister of then dowladii kumeelgaarka. Lately, he seems like he is redeeming himself when he keeps telling the failed politicians the reality of a new Soomaaliya. Some of them did not even want him to speak at the venue until Cali Mahdi forced them to listen to him.
