Bodies of Several Clerics Found In, Around Somali Mosque After Heavy Fighting By Derek Kilner Nairobi 21 April 2008 At least nine people have been found dead at a mosque in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. Residents say the victims, a number of them clerics from the mosque, were killed by Ethiopian troops during a weekend of heavy fighting with insurgent groups. Derek Kilner has more from VOA's East Africa bureau in Nairobi. Several of those killed are religious leaders from a major Sufi Islamic sect. According to Ali Hersi, who says he witnessed the event, the mosque's imam, Saed Yayhe, who is also the sect's leader in Somalia, was among the dead. Hersi says Ethiopian troops rounded up at least 20 people from the mosque and surrounding areas, and killed them in the mosque's parking lot. "People were collected from their homes and they were killed deliberately," Hersi said. "They were not fighting. Most of them were elders." He says the troops also arrested more than 30 people around the mosque, including 12 Koranic students. A spokesman for Ethiopia's Ministry of Information, Zemedkun Tekle dismissed charges of Ethiopian involvement in the killings . He told VOA such claims are "pure allegations aimed at damaging the image of Ethiopian troops and getting them to leave Somalia." Residents of Mogadishu have been assessing the aftermath of a weekend of fighting between Ethiopian troops backing the transitional government and Islamist-led insurgents. New bodies were still being found Monday. Some estimates of the number of people killed in the clashes are as high as 100. A Mogadishu resident who declined to be named, says the fighting began after Ethiopian troops entered an area in the north of the city seen as an insurgent stronghold. "After fighting for a few hours, the Ethiopians began to shell the areas," he said. "Heavy shelling has occurred which has not been seen for the past few months. Shelling with mortars, tank shells, and also Katyusha rockets." Somalia's prime minister, Nur Hassan Hussein, said the Ethiopian troops were defending themselves after being attacked by insurgents. With many residents afraid to recover the bodies of those killed, the number of casualties is difficult to assess. The local Elman Peace and Human Rights Organization says 81 people were killed Saturday and Sunday. From the Eritrean capital Asmara, Zakaria Haji-Abdi, deputy chairman of the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia, a moderate Islamic insurgent group, said the figure was higher. "The Ethiopian tanks and artillery are inside the capital city of Somalia and are shelling indiscriminately the Somali people," Haji-Abdi said. " Only yesterday, they have killed more than 100 people, women and children, and old." Ethiopian troops backing Somalia's Transitional Federal Government ousted the Islamic Courts Union from control of the capital, Mogadishu, in December 2006, but have since struggled to contain a growing insurgency involving several Islamist and clan-based militias opposed to the presence of Ethiopian troops. Residents say the bulk of the insurgents involved in Monday's fighting were former members of the Islamic Courts Union aligned with Haji-Abdi's Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia, rather than members of the more radical Shabaab. The United States recently designated the Shabaab as a terrorist organization. Mogadishu returned to relative calm on Monday, with many residents taking the opportunity to flee. More than a million Somalis have been displaced by the conflict. U.N. officials have called Somalia Africa's worst humanitarian crisis and warn that the situation continues to deteriorate.

MOGADISHU (AFP) - The bodies of nine Islamic clerics were found in and around a mosque in the Somali capital Monday, with residents saying they were shot by Ethiopian forces during weekend clashes with Islamist fighters. Six of the corpses lay inside the Al-Hidaya Mosque in northern Mogadishu and three outside. Their discovery brought the death toll from two days of clashes to 56. "They were innocent preachers who were shot dead by the Ethiopian forces," said Farah Fargan, a resident who helped collect the bodies. Witness Sheikh Mohamed Muse said the Ethiopian troops also arrested 21 boys who had taken refuge in the mosque during the fighting. "What they did was a gross humanitarian violation. They shot innocent clerics inside the house of Allah, I'm sure God will punish them," Muse said. Mogadishu's heaviest fighting in two months erupted Saturday between Islamist insurgents and Somali government troops backed by Ethiopian forces. Ethiopian troops came to the rescue of Somalia's embattled transitional government in late 2006 to oust an Islamist militia which had taken control of large parts of the restive Horn of Africa country. Islamist fighters have since waged a guerrilla war against the government, their Ethiopian allies and African Union peacekeepers, with civilians often caught in the ensuing crossfire. Somalia has been rocked by seemingly endless fighting since the 1991 ouster of president Mohamed Siad Barre.

Clerics killed in Somali mosque The bodies of 10 people have been found in a mosque in the Somali capital, after two days of clashes between Ethiopian troops and insurgents. Local residents blame the killings on the Ethiopians, who are backing the government against Islamist fighters. Six of the dead are religious leaders from the Tabliq Sufi sect, which is not involved in the conflict. Some 70 people were killed over the weekend, local residents say. Sporadic shooting can still be heard. Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein says the government was defending itself during the weekend clashes. But locals accused the Ethiopians of shelling the residential areas of Hurwa and Yaqshid in north-eastern Mogadishu, after they came under attack. 'Slaughtered' Aden Haji Yusuf, 60, was one of the local elders helped to bury the dead on Monday. "We are now out, for the first time in two days, to discover the dead bodies of some neighbours and bury them," he said. Tabliq official Shiekh Abdi-kheyr Isse said the Ethiopians had "slaughtered" the clerics. "The Ethiopians surrounded al-Hidaya Mosque on Sunday and killed [the] mullahs mercilessly, including Sheikh Sa'id, the chief of the group in southern Somalia," he said. Local resident Yahye Sheikh Muse said he had seen the dead bodies of three of his neighbours after the fighting. More than 100 people have been injured. Abdi-wali Hashi, only got the chance to take his mother to Daynile Hospital in Monday. "I could not venture out, even to check next door, where my mother was bleeding because of a gunshot wound on her leg," he told the BBC's Mohammed Olad Hassan. "The sound of the heavy gunfire for two days is still echoing in my ears," he said. Meanwhile, Islamic militants of the al-Shabab movement are still holding the south-western town of Wajid, 90 kilometres (52 miles) north of Baidoa, the current seat of the interim parliament. They took the town on Sunday, shutting down video cinema and kiosks selling narcotic leaves known as "khat" and also forced some boys in the city to shave their heads because they had their hair cut into western styles, witnesses said. "Heavily armed young men, who masked their faces with turbans, have been in control of the town and they have also been patrolling in the streets," local resident Madey **** Nur told the BBC by telephone. "Islamic law does not allow video cinema and all kinds of narcotics and that that is why we prohibited them here during our presence," militant commander Hassan Mo'alim Ibrahim told the BBC. "We are not going to leave the town until we set up an Islamic administration for the local people," he said. The prime minister blamed the violence on the Islamists. "The government is sorry about the fighting and loss of innocent civilian lives," he said on Sunday. "Our aim is to restore law and order through reconciliation and peaceful means, but that does not mean our troops and those of our ally Ethiopia will not defend themselves as they come under constant attack." The UN says that more than half of Mogadishu's population has fled recent fighting in the city. The Ethiopians intervened in 2006 to help government forces oust Islamists who had taken control of much of southern Somalia. The country has not had an effective national government since 1991.

Teenage girls from some minority communities who stick to their family customs have better mental health, researchers say. Queen Mary University of London found Bangladeshi girls who chose traditional rather than Western dress had fewer behavioural and emotional problems. The team said close-knit families and communities could help protect them. Pressure to integrate fully could be stressful, the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health reported. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to mental health problems, and the researchers said that identity, often bound up in friendship choices or clothing, played a role. They questioned a total of 1,000 white British and Bangladeshi 11 to 14-year-olds about their culture, social life and health, including questions designed to reveal any emotional or mental problems. Bangladeshi pupils who wore traditional clothing were significantly less likely to have mental health problems than those whose style of dress was a mix of traditional and white British styles. When this was broken down by gender, it appeared that only girls were affected. No similar effect was found in white British adolescents who chose a mixture of clothes from their own and other cultures. More support Professor Kam Bhui, one of the study authors, said that the result was "surprising" - he had expected that girls who were less fully integrated to show signs of greater strain. "Traditional clothing represents a tighter family unit, and this may offer some protection against some of the pressures that young people face. "What it suggests is that we need to assist people who are moving from traditional cultures and becoming integrated into Western societies, as they may be more vulnerable to mental health problems." Professor James Nazroo, a medical sociologist at the University of Manchester, said that the findings meant that "notions of Britishness" should be dealt with in a sophisticated way. "There are many ways in which people can be British - these girls who have good mental health, and still have a strong traditional culture, are by implication settled and comfortable with their identities." Indeed its growing reliance on force, instead of political solutions, are breeding more resistance, thereby endangering the unity and stability of the nation. At the same time, the TPLF agenda at present is the protection of its powers at any cost, which has become too costly for all citizens. In fact, that has forced TPLF to become inward looking, which has compelled it now to mend fence with Tigraians that it broke ranks with in 2001. Evidence of this is its increased resort to Tigranizing the power structures and the institutions of the country at the expense of other groups. Only when it is in difficulty the TPLF looks for more allies, unfortunately always at the wrong places. Kenya’s leaders mistook silent rage with acquiescence, as it is now the case with the TPLF. In a similar way, Kikuyu leaders also assumed that nepotism, force, corruption and political deception are the only way for them to prolong their dominance and stay in power. In the eyes of the people and the laws of Kenya, this was not consistent with the laws of the land and democratic practices elsewhere. Kenyan politicians allowed resentment and frustrations to build to breaking point, until the genie got out of the bottle last December and vented its long repressed anger against Kikuyu narrow nationalism. There is valuable lesson should the TPLF be willing to take heed of it. After all, it has come with a huge cost in terms of Kenyan lives. web page
