  1. There are too many promises in this speach that can't be realized. He tried to appease too many people which certainly will make his job impossible. The most important issues he talked are the Isreali-Palestanian problem. It seems there is new tone, more pronounced than anything other administrations before ever said. He touched on the Iran nuclear issue, very wise of to throw in their corner. He brought the issue of democracy in place where dictatorship has reigned for so long. His sincerity about Muslim leaders is questionable. I did like however his effort on how democracy and traditions are not irreconsible. And I'm glad he admitted the Iraq was mistake, and made point they seek no bases or access to Iraqi resources. Absent from all this is however any references to the Muslims in the continent of Africa. I wonder if he has the same sort of speach for dark continent.

  6. The question about the ancestry of the Somali Bantus is tricky one. I was always under impression it's the Somali that migrated from the north and settled in the south taking over the land of the natives (Somali Bantus)?

  10. By JEFFREY GETTLEMAN Monday, June 01, 2009 NAIROBI, Kenya — Somalia is once again a raging battle zone, with jihadists pouring in from overseas, preparing for a final push to topple the transitional government. The government is begging for help, saying that more peacekeepers, more money and more guns could turn the tide against the Islamist radicals. But the reality may be uglier than either side is willing to admit: Somalia has become the war that nobody can win, at least not right now. None of the factions — the moderate Islamist government, the radical Shabab militants, the Sufi clerics who control some parts of central Somalia, the clan militias who control others, the autonomous government of Somaliland in the northwest and the semiautonomous government of Puntland in the northeast — seem powerful enough, organized enough or popular enough to overpower the other contenders and end the violence that has killed thousands over the past two years. Somalia analysts say the main event, the government versus the Shabab, will drag on for months, fueled by outside support on both sides. The United Nations and Western countries see the transitional government, however feeble, as their best bulwark against piracy and Islamist extremism in Somalia, and are pumping in hundreds of millions of dollars for the government’s security. At the same time, the Shabab are kept afloat by an influx of weapons and fighters, much of it reported to be flowing through neighboring Eritrea. The Shabab, more than anyone else, have succeeded in internationalizing Somalia’s conflict and using their jihadist dreams to draw in foreign fighters from across the globe, including the United States. The Shabab, which means youth in Arabic, are a mostly under-40 militia who espouse the strict Wahhabi version of Islam and are guided, according to American diplomats, by another, better-known Wahhabi group: Al Qaeda. web page

  12. Amman, Jordan; and Jerusalem - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior members of his cabinet have pushed back hard against a renewed US demand to end settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territories. Interior Minister Eli Yishai said Sunday that it amounted to "expulsion." But 53 Israeli parliamentarians have moved to explore another kind of expulsion: Under a proposal to be reviewed this week, Jordan would become the official homeland for Palestinians now living in the West Bank. Among the challenges facing the proposal is this: nobody asked Jordan if it would support such a plan. Not surprisingly, it doesn't. Nearly half of the Knesset's 120 members moved last Wednesday to pass the "two states for two peoples on the two banks of the River Jordan" proposal on to the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee for further discussion. Israeli officials say the Knesset's vote does not represent the government's position and is unlikely to become official policy, while analysts dismiss it as a bid from the far right to undermine Mr. Netanyahu. But for many in Jordan, the bill personifies concerns about Israel's new, conservative government and its lack of commitment to the peace process. "It has done big damage," says Mamdouh Abbadi, a member of the Jordanian parliament who has been among the most vocal in calling for government action against the proposal. "Even if it's not passed, when 53 members of the parliament [Knesset] accept this law in the first reading, this is very important. We can't think it's just for show; it's the real thinking of the Israeli parliament and they represent the people." Last week, Jordan's foreign minister summoned the Israeli ambassador to deliver an official letter rejecting the idea and calling for the Israelis to stop the bill last week. In parliament, a group of at least 36 lawmakers are working to encourage their government to take strong action against Israel. web page

  19. The theme of virginity, forced marriage and sexual repression which populated in Ayaan Hirsi stories feeds western male sexual fantasies for anybody with a computer and an access to the internet can attest that ads for ‘penis enlargement’ techniques, ‘Viagra’ and pornographic promise of ‘virgin sluts’ often aim at meeting the sexual fantasies of white western male consumers. Hence, from the standpoint of western collective unconscious, false praises which are bestowed on Ayaan Hirsi Ali often mask the fact that she voices deeply held white male fantasies which cannot be uttered openly by the commentators of both left and right Eurocentric ideological camps. Maybe someone else in here who prescribes to and wholly believes in the idea that the West have reached Nirvana which all humanity should bow to also gets off Ayan's message.
