Ethiopian PM admits country needs to tackle debt issue
Che -Guevara replied to Che -Guevara's topic in Politics
So, this is the country that supposedly want to invest Somali ports. -
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has said foreign debt is becoming a burden to his country. "We have reached a point where debt servicing has become very hard for the national economy," Ahmed said in an annual performance report presentation to parliament on Monday less than 70 days after he assumed office in April. According to the prime minister, the country has taken $1.3 billion in loans during the first six months of the budget year (since July 8, 2017), which rose the country's total debt to $24.7 billion. He said a little more than 57 percent of the loan was used by the government while public companies consumed the rest. “During the first six months of the budget year, import-export showed a 0.02 percent increase but the trade balance widened [to the disadvantage of Ethiopia] by 2.2 percent,” he said. “We have been taking loans and now that is getting too much,” he said.

I had to ask Ethiopian friend to clarify what PM said. It seems PM words was construed by different groups. That said, Somalia which has no control over its borders shouldn't enter these sort of agreements. Regaining our sovereignty through reconcialation should be our main goal. Samafal, We should trade with our neighbors but Somalia is not in a position to control its fate.

He is splitting up the Ethiopian Telecom giant. TPLF is resisting the partial privatization of state-owned companies and liberalization of the economy. Somali business will greatly benefit if he opens the market. -

Whatever the case is, a nation with comprised sovereignty should not enter into these sorts of complicated agreements that will only benefit one side. A simple MOE with Kenya is causing Somalia such a headache. If you lack the expertise, have no control over your borders, no standing army and is missing the constitutional or legislative tools, you should not be in the business of making agreements such magnitude. And this rush to port auctioning will limit Somalia's abilities to produce anything. We are already importing almost everything.

What's happening here? Observer and Galbeedi agreeing on the same things. It is Eid miracle Ethiopia's situation is very fluid. As we speak, non-Oromo communities within Oromia continue to being targeted, in particular, Somalis. There are protests in the Somali and Harari regions. Problems in southern regions and of course, Arabs and West interference.

Introspect, I am glad Somalia stood firm on the Emirates issue. What's lacking in Somalia is the lack of strategic goals that is not beholden to men. They should adopt a policy of non-alignment as matter of policy. As far as Ethiopia is concerned, emphasis is on Somali sovereignty.

One thing is sure Abiy is looking less and less like tool.
