Somaliland Information minister shuts down Universal tv

Trying to silence legitimate critical voice is one of the early signs of a bad governance. -

100 days is too short a time to make a judgement on Somali politics. Give it at least 1 year and we can make a good case of whether Kulmiye brought tangible change or it is more of the same or worse. The good thing is that, unlike UDUB, Kulmiye has something we can compare it to - i.e. UDUB's achievements and setbacks. So it is easier for those who are in the business of political analysis to do their comparisons whether its security, economical, political and socio-econimical developments. Perhaps the thing most people will be watching is what Kulmiye makes of the threats which are brazenly emanation from Buuhoodle. And also the regional politics - i.e. the relationship with Ethiopia which is currently at rock bottom. So we will see how the next 9 months transpire. Surely they will be very interesting times.

Originally posted by NASSIR: Libaahe, prior to Mr. Ismail Haji Muse, a resident of Ceerigaabo originally from the clans of D-jibouti was selected and he had held the mayoral responsibility for 13 years right after the Erigavo Accord and following the collapse of the Somali government just to avoid any further conflicts that may result from political issues. The "Somaliland" administration (since there's no central government) + specific provisions of internal agreements later turned out to be the ideal solution of governance and the clans gathered finally and selected Haji Muse who is half-Makhiri himself, even his children and half brothers. So you can see the deep connection of the people of Erigavo regardless of their clan origin. Responsibility of the City's Local Governance is shared among the residents, so it's not limited to the mayoral position only though you are making it sound like what sub-clan the mayor originates from automatically qualifies for whose is the owner or majority of Ceerigaabo. Far from it, as I mentioned, the former District Commissioner who served for almost 13 years played an integral role after the civil war of the early 90s led by the SNM clan militia and in the period of an internal reconciliation process. Erigavo District was known as ********** District back then, despite the historical injustice attached to that name. Let the Bygones be Bygones and allow reer Ceerigaabo to live in peace and harmony. This political status of peaceful co-existance is what elevates the good image of the city in comparison to Galka'yo and Mogadisho. And who is this mysterious nameless mayor who run Erigavo for more than a decade? Young Libaahe, are you aware of the fact that there are over 2600 Maakhiri residences + businesses and large plots of farm lands inherited from generations to generatioms in Erigavo, 1200 residences of the people of Las Anod/Darwiish, whereas the combined residences of Hargeisa/Bur'o in the city are of 2400. And where did you get these numbers from? War ileen tano kale.

Good to see that Ceerigaabo High School is renamed after one of the great Sanaagian poets Xaaji Adan Afqalooc.

Where is Jeff 5 September, 2010 So as soon as I typed the title to this post, I decided I had to listen to a little Aretha Franklin. It had been quite a while until now that I've listened to this song, and all of a sudden I wish I had some more soul music on my iTunes. Guess I'll have to work on that. But, that is not what this post is about. There are a couple of articles out in the news that I'm sure will go largely unnoticed in the West. Last week I saw on CNN International TV an episode of the show 'Prism' which was talking about the fighting in Mogadishu and how it has intensified between the TFG (UN backed government in Southern Somalia which controls a few blocks of the city including the presidential palace, the airport, very little else, and very little outside of town) and Al Shabaab (terrorist group linked to and supported by Al Qaeda in control of a large chunk of the rest of the South of Somalia). The African Union troops in Mogadishu continue to battle insurgents daily, with people being killed all the time. Meanwhile, up in the north in a region (or separate country depending on who you ask) called Somaliland where I am, things function. There are police. There is a military. But there is also an elected president and a two house legislature. There are storied buildings and pipe-born water. Electricity reaches many houses in the city in which I live, and it is all run by private businesses. Construction is booming rather than places being destroyed by mortars and heavy artillery fire. I posted at the end of June/early July about elections which took place in Somaliland. The challenger beat the incumbent, and the loser stepped down recognizing the vote and giving up power. Little has been said about this. Little attention is given to the fact that while so much international attention is given to the Somali 'problem' with all the fighting and killing that continues to take place, there is a part of what the world knows as 'Somalia' that is developing mostly on its own. In fact, I wonder if there were more international attention if it would continue to develop, or if the special interests of the outside would cause chaos and confusion pitting people against one another for what they can profit instead of what profits the people. We just may be able to see if that is the case, or if this region could actually be used as a place to bring development and inspire the South to change. There are a couple of articles you can read about the US being about to start ties with Somaliland. Until now, the North and South have been considered as one, and only the government in the South was recognized (even though it has power over just a tiny pocket of the entire country). The articles on BBC News and Voice of America News both talk of the problems in Somalia, but show that maybe the world is beginning to give some of that R-E-S-P-C-E-C-T that the people here have struggled to earn. It surely hasn't come easily as people were caught up in fighting back in the years before and after the infamous 'Blackhawk Down' episode. There has been civil war and Somaliland is still surrounded by areas of instability both in Somalia and neighboring Ethiopia with Eritrea not too far away. However, peace prevails and progress is happening. I hope that the investment of the US and other countries helps progress to increase and doesn't just complicate things and add too many interests to this small beacon of hope. Even though I will be leaving in a couple of weeks, I will continue to follow what happens in Somaliland.

The rude fact is that someone from either PL or other regions in the south (e.g. Gedo) or for that matter as Xiin put it from the "****-block", can not and will not be able to change anything on the ground as far as Mogadishu/Banadir is concerned. The same goes for anyone from Somaliland. If, however, both Presidency and Prime ministership come from Mogadishu, that is a different story as far as city itself is concerned. I believe that will alter the course and turn back the tide against the Alshabaab group. [ September 22, 2010, 02:07 AM: Message edited by: Miskiin-Macruuf-Aqiyaar ]

^^ LOL You remind me of a story I heard of the big-foot people. It goes, once upon a time, a big foot traveler brought his small herd of animals to Hargeisa livestock market. He was lucky that day, the sell fetched him higher price than he budgeted for. So, after he did the shopping for the family back in the kilka-5aad, he had some spare cash. So he had an idea. He rewarded himself with two pairs of ultra-strong sandles that will last him for years. Instead of wearing his brand new ultra-strong pair of shoes, he walked back bare feet. It was not long before he left Hargeisa for the famous Wado-Bariis, that he stepped on a sharp edged piece of glass (quraarad)... blood oozed out from the cut like mentos causes Coke to fountain. The funny thing happened when passers-by stopped to help the old man.. but rather of making use of the help offered, he exclaims "Ilaahi caqligaa na siiyay ayaa mahadaa leh..., sow sidaa uma kala jarteen hadaan kabahaas gashaanlahaa??" The morale of the story, your folks are not known to pull off such an elaborate master operation. So well done for that. Now we will just take into the calculation that the bigfoot is capable of doing grand scheme operations. *jokes*.

It is like the SSC melitia establishing a base in Northern Togdheer... food for thaught. And, for your information, some of the locals clans there have already organised themselves against the gunmen. After the Sheekh Atom pass-through has been disrupted by the Puntland administration, those who used that path have desperately found an openning in the relaxed new security regime in Hargeisa. Anyhow, this is a wakeup call for the new administration in Hargeisa. They are falling short of the high standards that Rayaale and his team set.

The weakness in the new government is that they couldn't get that information before it is happening ,,, they came to know this after they landed in the coast and they almost reached their destiny. They should reform the intelligence and do it better next time. One thing the Udub government did a really superb job about was the security of the country. UDUB was no-nonsense about the security of the country. Instead of fixing the wrongs and correcting mishaps, President Ahmed Siilaanyo recently disbanded the informal regional security council - the apparatus which acted as the ears and arms of the government in the country side and beyond. Now, that Somaliland is shaken and is in danger of becoming a 'monsters' path' (wado halaq mareen)... hence Kulmiye Party need to beef up their security credentials.

Ok, the Garaads are now willing to sit witht he SL government... but the question is What are they going to talk about?? What is on the table? Where are the Kulmiye cheerleaders when you need them?
