Somalia: Bogus Kenyan doctors to be deported from Puntland 26 Jul 26, 2012 - 8:52:45 AM GAROWE, Somalia Jul 26 2012 (Garowe Online) – Three Kenyan nationals who claimed to be doctors were identified and will be deported after health officials found out that the three were illegally working in Puntland, Garowe Online reports. The Ministry of Health announced on Thursday that the three Kenyan nationals were handed over to security officials after they were made aware that the Kenyans were carrying false qualifications and were not authorized to work in Puntland. Puntland Minister of Health, Dr. Ali Abdullahi Warsame Minister of Health, Dr. Ali Abdullahi Warsame, held a press conference on Thursday and gave a statement about the incident. “The ministry had found that the three were working as doctors and had been traveling across Puntland working as doctors. The ministry then investigated the three and found in that investigation that they had illegally come to Puntland and that there credentials were false,” said Dr. Warsame. According to the minister, the three men were brought to Puntland by a resident, who had hired the men as doctors. However the resident did not register the Kenyans with the Ministry of Health nor verify the men’s credentials. The Minister announced that all foreign health officials working in Puntland would be asked to verify the credentials. “Anyone working as a health official in Puntland is asked to visit the various health ministry compounds in Puntland and bring their qualifications to validate their employment in Puntland,” said Dr. Warsame. The Ministry gave a seven day deadline for foreign health officials working in Puntland to produce their qualifications. According to Puntland officials, the number of unqualified health officials arriving in Puntland has increased with officials blaming naive residents’ that are focused on revenues instead of expertise. The ministries have also come under criticism as they had failed to properly regulate foreign workers arriving in Puntland. The health minister indicated that his ministry along with others have taken a lesson from this debacle and would pay a closer attention to foreign workers arriving in Puntland. GAROWE ONLINE

Somalia: Puntland assists in Somali migrants rescue mission 28 Jul 28, 2012 - 11:32:09 AM GAROWE, Somalia Jul 28 2012 (Garowe Online) – Puntland residents played a crucial role in coordinating rescue efforts to save over ninety Somali migrants stranded in the Mediterranean Sea , Garowe Online reports. The rescue efforts began on Thursday, after a distress call was received by a Garowe resident whose brother and 90 other Somali migrants said that they were stranded on a boat in the Mediterranean Sea. “I received a phone call from my brother by satellite phone, explaining that the boat was floating for days and that they had minimal supplies,” said Ahmed Jama a Garowe resident. Mr. Jama and a group of his friends began desperately contacting Libyan and Italian officials to inform them about the Somali migrants’ distress call. “We contacted Libyan and Italian naval ships patrolling the Mediterranean Sea. They had asked for their location, so we gave them their last known coordinates,” said Mr. Jama. The group also contacted Puntland officials who in turn notified Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole who lobbied Italian and Libyan officials to assist the Somali migrants. The 90 Somali migrants were reportedly rescued by a Libyan naval ship and brought to Libya, according to Mr. Jama the Somali migrants were in good condition and in the hands of Libyan authorities. Saturday morning President Farole spoke to BBC Somali, to discuss illegal migration amongst Somalis, and how to curb the current epidemic. “This terrible problem has been occurring in Somalia for quite some time, our youth who some of whom were working, going to school or universities have been led to believe they can reach Europe but they are unaware of the extreme conditions and dangers they will encounter,” said President Farole. Somali migrants traveling through the Sahara desert in hopes of crossing the Mediterranean Sea and reaching Europe has increased, President Farole outlined some of the causes of why thousands of Somalis are risking their lives. “In the past conflict has caused many Somalis to flee their country, however in the present, I believe a strong majority of these people are misguided and foolishly choose to risk their lives when they can afford to contribute to their society and country,” “Thousands have perished trying to make it across the Sahara desert and there are criminal enterprises taking advantage of these misguided people. Somali government officials need to pay close attention along with the international community, the Somali diaspora need to work together to help solve this epidemic,” said President Farole. According to Omar Hussien, who has studied illegal migration among Somalis for the last 10 years, to solve the illegal migration problem you have to address the factors on the ground in Somalia. “High unemployment among Somalis is an underlying factor, without addressing employment and other factors you cannot remedy the problem,” says Mr. Hussien. The big day is nearing, the day that the north-eastern somalis made a pact, a pact that created Puntland. 14 years later here we are. Whats your plans for the big day out guys? I am going to chill out, review what's been achieved in the state and head down to cafe puntland in my city for some fadhi ku dirir before heading off to the after-party function we are holding in our city. The question is will I be wearing the puntland colors or not? I think I may skip wearing the colors since alot of other somalis may view me as qabiliste but im definitely heading down. What you guys expect from Puntland this year? I expect the usual; full military parade with weapons, paradees of different sectors of the community and other key stakeholders, a grand speech by the president, and the community just having a blast. Extra things I want to see added this year would be more weaponry shows especially from our marines and other cities of Puntland like galkayo and bosaso. I want to see Bosaso/Galkayo have a huge day out because they always appear a bit quiet on this day unlike garowe. Some may reach to conclusions and say garowe is ballin cuz one of they're own is leading but I dont buy that crap. I just want to see this year more weaponry shows, better participation of other cities, I want to see updated videos of all the development that is occurin in our cities and finally a more united puntland together in garowe.

Where are the haters who said no oil in shabell north? I don't see this at all. The first exploration well Shabeel 1 showed oil but it wasn't the basin that is being targeted. Shabeel North is not even the basin but it is closer to it then shabeel 1 and it has now shown an active petroleum system. (TSXV: HRN). Further to the recent announcement on the testing of the upper Jesomma sand reservoir which yielded fresh water, the well continued drilling through the entire Jesomma reservoir section and had reached a depth of 2,200 meters. The section contained several additional sands with oil and gas shows and a full set of electrical logs was run to determine if these sands contained potential oil zones which would warrant further testing. The analysis of these logs indicate that the most prospective looking zone in the well was the upper Jesomma sand interval that had already been confirmed by testing to contain fresh water and thus no further testing could be justified. Based on the positive evidence of oil shows and the presence of good quality reservoir in the Jesomma, the partnership has decided to deepen the well in order to evaluate the potential of the Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic sections. The current revised total depth will be approximately 3,400 meters and is expected to take an additional 15 to 20 days to reach that depth. The Jurassic section in the nearby Shabeel well had thin reservoir sands with oil and gas shows, but this section was determined to be not thick enough to warrant testing. These sands are expected to thicken basinward towards Shabeel North. There was also evidence that there may have been faulting in the Shabeel well which could have cut out a significant portion of the basal reservoir section, which is not expected in Shabeel North. Horn Petroleum President and CEO David Grellman stated "While we are obviously disappointed that the Jesomma sands tested wet, the overall results of the two wells drilled during this campaign are quite encouraging in the long term prospects for oil potential of the basin. We have confirmed a working petroleum system, good quality reservoirs and thick impermeable sealing rocks. The two Jesomma structures drilled to date appear, subject to final petrophysical analysis, to have issues with the integrity of the trapping mechanism. We are still hopeful that the lower zones in the Shabeel North well may have favourable trapping geometries against the deeper thick carbonate and anhydrite sections seen in the original Shabeel well."
