It seems like with our culture, the more you produce, the better off you are. Perhaps that works in a nomadic society but in the concrete jungle here? I'm not so sure. I've noticed families where the mothers are pregnant practically every year and I come across needy children who only seek their parents attention but lose it after a year because another one is on the way or is born. So they go on destroying and creating havoc. The mother or hell even the father doesn't have the time to teach them a thing or two about edeb, akhlaq and ixtiraam for the most basic things in life. In result, you have a troubled child with no foundation. I am a firm believer of upholding quality over quantity and ask our fellow brethren to produce children of substance instead of a massive number .

I once received a referral (discipline paper to see the principal or head master) in middle school for telling a new comer student, "ka fakkar" a math problem. Teacher thought I was calling him a fu*ker. I tried explaining myself to the teacher but the old fart wouldn't listen so I had to break it down to the principal. A few months later I received another referral for telling the same student to "shid nalka" LOL. Had to explain myself again and was told to avoid speaking Somali around that teacher. In high school I was pulled aside by a counselor after hearing a conversation that was taking place between a group of Somalis and told me to stop saying ni99a. Doqonka mistakened "aniga" for ni99a. Mind you I'm not one to use such a term. It's fun taking biology with a group of Somali ciyaal suuqiin. Let me tell you, the entire Somali student body always had a field day when teachers brought up creatures like geese (goose) and seals (seal).

I wish I got a good old hardy discussion with my parents about the birds and the bees before being thrown into a cage of lions inside a sex ed. classroom. Boy were people surprised at how naive I was. I still remember how horrified and gobsmacked I felt to the point that I thought whatever that was just taught to me can't possibly be true. Someone must've been pulling a prank on me and the rest of my classmates. I know it's taboo in our culture but a little education doesn't hurt. Plus, if God blesses me with children, I'd rather have them hear it from me instead qof kale.
