  2. A dose of alcohol may be a good treatment for people with head injuries, emergency doctors suggest. Their basis for this is the discovery that people appear less likely to die following brain trauma if they have alcohol in their bloodstream. It could be that alcohol dampens the body's inflammatory response to injury, the US team told Archives of Surgery. But they stressed that alcohol can cause medical complications and is contributory to many accidents. Experts cautioned people should not interpret the findings as an excuse to drink more alcohol. The amount of alcohol consumed appears to be important - too little and there is no effect, too much and the beneficial effects are lost, studies on animals suggest. Experts believe the right dose of alcohol, however, stops the cascade of swelling, inflammation and further destruction of brain cells, known as secondary brain injury. The latest work, based on more than 38,000 moderate-to-severe head trauma patients, is the largest yet to look at the effects of alcohol on brain injury survival. Like past research, Dr Ali Salim and his colleagues from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in Los Angeles, found head injury patients who had drunk were significantly less likely to die than those who had not had any alcohol. They also tended to be younger and have less severe injuries. Balancing risks On the flip side, patients with alcohol in their bloodstream were more likely to experience medical complications during their hospital stay. Nonetheless, the researchers said: "The finding of reduced mortality in traumatic brain injury patients with pre-injury ethanol raises the intriguing possibility that administering ethanol to patients with brain injuries may improve outcome. "Additional research is warranted to investigate reasons for this association and the potential therapeutic implications." Dr John Heyworth, president of the College of Emergency Medicine, said: "This is a long way from thinking about giving alcohol to patients in A&E. But if, in the future, the science and evidence proves that it would be beneficial, we would consider it." Professor Michael Oddy, of the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust, said: "Despite the intriguing findings the message must be the same - if you wish to avoid a brain injury, use alcohol with care and moderation." Alcohol Concern chief executive Don Shenker said: "The fact is, being drunk increases your chances of getting into an accident in the first place. When judgement's impaired, we can put ourselves at risk." (BBC)
  3. Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula has criticised last week's raid by US forces in Somalia in which a suspected al-Qaeda member was reportedly killed. Mr Wetangula told the Reuters news agency that he felt uncomfortable when the US conducted operations in the region without sharing information. He said such "lone ranger behaviour" had frequently failed to achieve the stated goals. Kenya is a US ally in the fight against East African Islamist militants. Mr Wetangula also said that he welcomed any "success" in the raid. US Special Forces flew into Somalia by helicopter, killed Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan and carried away his body, officials said. Analysts say Nabhan was one of the most senior leaders of al-Qaeda's East Africa cell. It is believed he fled to Somalia after the 2002 attacks and was working with the al-Shabab group, which the Americans see as al-Qaeda's proxy in Somalia. Al-Shabab, which controls much of southern Somalia, later staged a suicide bombing on African Union peacekeepers in Mogadishu, saying it was revenge for the US raid. Nabhan was suspected of two attacks on the same day - bombing an Israeli-owned hotel in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa and trying to shoot down an Israeli airliner. The authorities in Kenya also regard him as a suspect in two attacks on US embassies in the region in 1998. (BBC AFRICA)

  10. Somali schools should stop using "un-Islamic" textbooks distributed by the United Nations, a spokesman for the Islamist group al-Shabab has said. Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage urged Somalis not to send their children to schools which use such books. A BBC reporter in the capital Mogadishu says that despite the violence in the country, many schools still operate - and most use UN textbooks. Extreme Islamist groups control most of southern Somalia. The writ of the UN-backed government only runs in small parts of Mogadishu. "Some UN agencies like Unesco are supplying Somali schools with textbooks to try to teach our children un-Islamic subjects," Mr Rage said at a graduation ceremony for Koranic students, reports the Reuters news agency. "I call upon all Somali parents not to send their youngsters to schools with curriculum supported by the UN agencies." The BBC's Mohammed Olad Hassan in Mogadishu says it is not clear whether other al-Shabab leaders share his view. Our reporter says some schools use textbooks from Saudi Arabia. Al-Shabab is accused of having links to al-Qaeda. On Thursday, it carried out a double suicide bombing, killing 17 African Union peacekeepers in Mogadishu. Somalia has not had an effective national government since 1991. Years of fighting and anarchy have left some three million people - half the population - needing food aid. SOURCE: BBC AFRICA
  11. ^Yusuf was holed up in Baydhabo like a farmer until the Ethiopians came and managed to install him in Villa Somalia. "Two sugars please!"
  12. ^His only weakness is he's too benevolent. To tame Somalia, he should round up people that call him "moron" and have them shot.
  13. So if this was a revenge attack why didn't the coward Shabaab strike at the US???? AMISOM wasn't behind the killing of your precious fugitive, it was the United States of America. So why don't you attack them? The cowardice of these fake wadaads is striking. GOD SAVE THE PRESIDENT OF SOMALIA!
  14. Let the opposition bring their best man forward, then let there be a duel to the death between this man and the President. Who wins gets the country. Stop the senseless deaths of bystanders.
