April 8, 2004 Neocons Seek Islamic 'Reformation' by Jim Lobe One thing that can be said about U.S. neo-conservatives is they do not lack for ambition. "We need an Islamic reformation," Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz confided on the eve of the US invasion of Iraq last year, "and I think there is real hope for one." Echoing those views one year later, another prominent neo-conservative, Daniel Pipes of the Philadelphia-based Middle East Forum (MEF), recently declared that the "ultimate goal" of the war on terrorism had to be Islam's modernization, or, as he put it, "religion-building." Such an effort needs to be waged not only in the Islamic world, geographically speaking, added Pipes, who last year was appointed by President George W. Bush to the board of directors of the US Institute for Peace (USIP), but also among Muslims in the West, where, in his view, they are too often represented by "Islamist (or militant Islamic)" organizations. Pipes is currently seeking funding for a new organization, tentatively named the "Islamic Progress Institute" (IPI), which "can articulate a moderate, modern and pro-American viewpoint" on behalf of US Muslims and that, according to a grant proposal by Pipes and two New York-based foundations obtained by IPS, can "go head-to-head with the established Islamist institutions." Daniel Pipes "Through adroit media activity and political efforts," says the proposal, "advocates for a supremacist and totalitarian form of Islam in the United States – such as the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) and the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) – have effectively established themselves as the spokesmen for all Muslims in the country." "This situation is fraught with dangers for moderate Muslims as well as for non-Muslims," the proposal continues, adding, "Islam in America must be American Islam or it will not be integrated; there can be no place for an Islam in America that functions as a seditious conspiracy aimed at wiping out American values, undermining American interfaith civility, and, in effect, dictating the form of Islam that will be followed in America." Leaders of the three groups named by Pipes strongly deny his characterizations of their views, and stress that they, like Catholic, Protestant and Jewish groups in the United States that promote the interests of their members are neither more nor less radical or chauvinistic in their political or theological views than their non-Muslim counterparts. "We are nonsectarian" said Sayyid M. Syeed, ISNA's secretary general, who said his group has had leaders from both the Shi'a and Sunni currents of Islam and whose current vice president is a woman. "If we were Saudi-oriented, we would never have a Shi'a president or a woman in such a role," he said, adding that his group is also actively engaged in many "interfaith partnerships." CAIR's spokesman, Ibrahim Hooper, said his organization strives to represent the views of all US Muslims, and pointed to a new survey of the views of mosque leaders and congregants in Detroit, which has one of the largest Muslim populations in the country, as an example of the fundamental moderation of US Muslims and those of his group. The survey, carried out by the Michigan-based Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, found that only about eight percent of the leadership and members of Detroit's 33 mosques described themselves as adherents of a fundamentalist, "salafi" approach to Islam of the kind that is identified with the "Wahhabi," or "Islamist" views of concern to Pipes and other neo-conservatives, who have said that as many as 80 percent of US mosques preach Wahhabism. The vast majority of both mosque leaders and participants, according to the Detroit survey, were registered to vote and supported active engagement in the political process; wanted to engage in civic and educational activities with people of non-Muslim faiths; and even took part in public school or church events designed to teach others about Islam. "Detroit mosques are not isolationist ... and very few mosque participants hold Wahhabi views," said Ihsan Bagby, who conducted the survey and teaches Islamic Studies at the University of Kentucky. Pipes, who has written four books on Islam and taught Islamic studies at several leading universities, came to national prominence after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on New York and the Pentagon. While he has long insisted that there is nothing inherently violent about Islam, "moderate Muslims," in his view, have been intimidated by radicals both in the Islamic world and in the United States. "While Muslims in some Muslim-majority countries (like Turkey) have demonstrated a commitment to moderate Islam," he writes in his grant application, "Muslim communities in the United States, Canada and Western Europe are dominated by a leadership identified with Wahhabism and other radical trends, such as the Muslim Brethren and Deobandism ...they seek a privileging of Islam and intimidate their critics." Within the United States, "all Muslims, unfortunately, are suspect," Pipes wrote in a recent book, which called for the authorities to be especially vigilant towards Muslims with jobs in the military, law enforcement, or diplomacy. Last year, he cited as evidence of this insight the arrest on suspicion of espionage of Muslim chaplain James Yee at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility that houses hundreds of prisoners from Bush's "war on terrorism." The Yee case later fell apart. Pipes is also the founder of Campus Watch, a group that monitors university professors of Middle Eastern and Islamic studies and exposes them for alleged anti-American or anti-Zionist views. That effort, which has been denounced by leading Middle East scholars, has become the basis for a far-reaching bill pending in Congress that would provide unprecedented government oversight of regional studies programs in universities. Pipes has also criticized Bush for meeting with, and thus he argues legitimizing, the leaders of major Islamic organizations, including CAIR and ISNA, which he believes are pursuing radical, if partially hidden, agendas that he attempts tirelessly to expose on his personal website. CAIR has called him "the nation's leading Islamophobe." Like many of his fellow-neo-conservatives, Pipes has also been an outspoken supporter of positions taken by the governing Likud Party in Israel, to the extent even of opposing the U.S.-backed "road map" designed to lead to an independent Palestinian state. To encourage "moderation" among Palestinians, he has written, "the Palestinians need to be defeated even more than Israel needs to defeat them." In his grant proposal, Pipes writes that he is working on launching the IPI with "a group of anti-Islamist Muslims," whom he does not identify. Contacted about the proposal, Pipes told IPS, "I can't confirm anything. MEF doesn't talk about its proposals. We don't talk about projects that have not been announced. We don't talk about internal matters to the press." In a trip to Cleveland in February, Stephen Schwartz, a writer and former Trotskyite activist who claims to have converted to Islam in the mid-1990s, and Hussein Haqqani, a former Pakistani government official now with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, unveiled plans for a new "Institute for Islamic Progress and Peace" (IIPP) of which Schwartz identified himself as executive director. Schwartz, who has praised Pipes' work and claims to be personally close to Wolfowitz, has published articles in The Weekly Standard and other neo-conservative publications, where Pipes' writings also appear regularly. Schwartz was quoted by the Cleveland Jewish Press saying that the new group would serve as a "platform" for "people who view Islam as a private faith." "This is a unique chance to change the position of the Muslim community in America," he said. "If we don't do it, no one else will." Schwartz and Haqqani also did not return messages left at their offices. Muslim leaders say they are not worried their membership will desert them for either new group. "There's a big difference between organizations that emerge organically from a community in response to the demand of their constituencies and one which is manufactured for political reasons by people who dislike what the consensus views of that community are," said Hussein Ibish of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, which has also been a target of Pipes. The artical I posted is not from a western paper it's from Azzam Publications a muslim news source. It's not just the saudi family I'm critical of there are other to many to write. I was told that I was needed for questioning for a period not exceeding two weeks. I was then taken to the famous Ar-Ruwais Interrogation Centre in Ar-Ruwais District, Jeddah. Unlike the Al-Hair maximum security prison in Riyadh, where Dr. Sheikh Salman Al-Owdah and Dr. Sheikh Safar Al-Hawali have been in detention since September 1994 (over four years now), Ar-Ruwais Interrogation is not publicly known by international human rights organisations such as Amnesty International and Red Cross. The Saudi Government continues to deny the existence of such a place. Ar-Ruwais Interrogation Centre is also the place where Sheikh Abu Abdul-Azeez, the initiator of the Jihad in Bosnia was held for fifteen months (he has since been released but is banned from leaving the country) and Abu Abdur-Rahman Al-Sarehi, the mastermind of the famous Lion's Den Operation against the Soviet Army in Jaaje, Afghanistan, 1987: undoubtedly the most brilliant operation conducted by the foreign Mujahideen against the Soviets in the ten year Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, is still being held. When I arrived at the prison, I was placed in a large room with about ten other brothers. I was placed in such a room because all the solitary confinement cells were full. I saw at least five corridors of cells, each corridor housing about 75 brothers, totalling over 350 brothers. This was only in my section: there are other sections to the Centre. I knew just over half of these 350 brothers, as I met them in various lands of Jihad. There was also one corridor specifically for women, where mothers, sisters, daughters and wives of brothers were housed. It is important to note that there are NO common criminals in Ar-Ruwais. Ar-Ruwais is a special, secret interrogation centre/ prison, specifically for 'political prisoners'. Prince Naif, the Saudi Interior Minister, continues to deny the existence of political prisoners in Saudi Arabia. I spent the first three days in this communal cell, with no problems. After that my name was called from a list and I was asked to follow the guards. They took me to a special room, containing many unusual objects: this was one of the many torture chambers in the prison. I was joined by two individuals: one guard and one interrogator. When I said 'Assalamu-alaikum' to him, he swore at me and then he came and began to play with my beard, making fun of it. He was clean-shaven of course. This interrogator spoke to me for about one hour, during which he said the following points to me: "We are stronger and more powerful than you. You are not Mujahideen, you are homosexuals, you are dogs, you are women." "All your affairs are in my hands. If I want, I can kill you, I can order the guard to rape you and no-one has power to stop me if I want to do this." "You came here because you did such-and-such crime and said such-and-such thing." even though he had no evidence for any accusation. After this first hour, he left and another interrogator entered the room. He was larger and stronger than the first interrogator. He had a large beard, a garment that was above his ankles and clear marks of prolonged prostration on his forehead. He handcuffed me and began to ask me some questions. For the next two hours, he continued to ask me the same question, whilst the soldier continued to beat me on the soles of my feet with a baton: "Do you believe that King Fahd is a kafir and that the Saudi Government is a government based on kufr?" By the end of these two hours, my feet were bleeding and had swollen to twice their size. My toenails had come off. They asked this question to all the brothers, so that once the brothers sign the paper stating that they believe this, they will pass a fatwa (religious edict) on them, stating that they are khawaarij (dissidents), who can lawfully be killed. During these four hours, they said and did the following things to me. "In Islam, whatever is necessary to establish an obligation, then that thing itself becomes an obligation. It is an obligation upon us to protect this country, so it is permissible (Halal) for us to commit homosexual acts upon you in order to protect this country. We can rape you now and kill you now. We are authorised to do so." He then laughed and mentioned the verse in the Quran, (Surah Ta-Ha (20), Verse 55) jokingly: 'From it we created you, and into it we will return you &' citing his evidence for raping me. It was at that moment that I vowed to myself that if ever I saw this man outside the prison, I would kill him and not fear the consequences. The interrogator then proceeded to read out a list of crimes that I was supposed to have committed. The soldier continued to beat me to force me to confess to these crimes, until I shouted to the interrogator: "BY ALLAH, I did not do those things!" The interrogator then said to me, "Allah, leave Him to the side. This is between me and you: it has nothing to do with Allah." He then threatened to rape me and tried to remove my trousers, but I resisted. Some brothers in the prison were stripped naked. Others saw the interrogator order the soldier to remove his trousers and underwear as a means of threatening them. At least one brother I know was actually raped. Other brothers refuse to speak about this topic, due to their shame and honour, but there were other brothers who were raped as well. During the interrogation sessions, the interrogator continued to beat me with a baton and a whip, on my face, hands and spine. My body turned black and red due to the beating. Six months on, I still have pains in my spine due to this beating. They swore at me and cursed my mother. At other times, I was ordered to stand for hours on end and the soldiers would beat me if I tried to sit down. I know one Algerian brother who was forced to stand for three months. He was beaten on the soles of his feet and blood was dripping from them. They removed his clothes and inserted a baton into his rectum. Another brother had his beard plucked hair by hair until there was not a single hair left on his face. Other brothers had pins and other sharp objects inserted into their private parts. I saw many brothers with signs of electric torture on their bodies. Ar-Ruwais Centre uses three types of electric torture. One is a hand-held stun gun, another is the size of a car battery and the third is a huge, sophisticated machine, which was known to the interrogators as 'Cinderella'. Cinderella is a unit into which the entire body of the victim is inserted. His arms, legs and waist are tied down with strong straps, whilst electric current is applied to him. It is electronically controlled and fully computerised. Some brothers have suffered permanent brain damage as a result of torture in this machine. [Note by Azzam Publications: it is important to point out that no Muslim country has the technology to produce such a sophisticated machine. A British company in Selly Oak, Birmingham, UK, is famous for its custom-made 20ft and 40ft fully-equipped torture chambers, which are sold to Muslim countries. This point was also debated in Parliament by some British MP's.] I met Abu Abdur-Rahman As-Sarehi (real name Hassan As-Sarehi) in Ar-Ruwais. As-Sarehi was one of the most brilliant Mujahideen commanders in the Afghan Jihad. In Jaaje, 1987, the Mujahideen mounted a daring and spectacular attack against a powerful Soviet offensive involving Land and Air power. It was one of the most famous battles during the whole war and, due to the high risk encountered, it was known as the Lion's Den Operation of Afghanistan. Many notable Mujahideen personalities participated in this operation, such as Usama bin Ladin, Abu Zubair Al-Madani and Sheikh Tameem Adnani amongst many others. Sheikh Abdullah Azzam was in the second line of the Front. The mastermind and commander of this operation was Abu Abdur-Rahman As-Sarehi. As-Sarehi was the teacher of Ibn-ul-Khattab (the Ameer of the Foreign Mujahideen in Chechnya) and taught Ibn-ul-Khattab much of what he knew, from the time he came to Afghanistan as a young teenager, until he left for Tajikistan, as a brilliant commander. After the explosion of the US Army base in Riyadh, the Saudi Government requested the Pakistani Government to extradite As-Sarehi, as he was living in Peshawar at the time. They accused As-Sarehi of involvement in this explosion, though without a shred of evidence. The Pakistani Government agreed to hand over As-Sarehi to the Saudi Government in return for two of the topmost Pakistani drug smugglers imprisoned in Saudi Arabia and awaiting execution. After four brothers were executed in Saudi Arabia for allegedly plotting the Riyadh explosion, the Saudi Government should have released Hassan As-Sarehi, but they continued to detain him. He has now been in prison for over three years and the following things have been done to him: His neck was stretched away from his body so that it is permanently disabled. He can no longer turn his neck from side to side. He has been stripped naked and made to stand for weeks on end. He was subjected to electric torture from all the three types of electric torture equipment, including 'Cinderella'. He has been denied visits from his family. His body has become very weak now and his face is disfigured, like someone who has undergone severe physical and mental torture. In the midst of all this torture, As-Sarehi told his interrogators: "Bring me a sheet of paper and I will sign it confessing to every single crime that you accuse me of. I killed President Kennedy, I killed King Faisal, I carried out the Riyadh and Al-Khobar Explosions, anything you want." His interrogators replied that that was not good enough; they wanted to know how he done it. He replied to them "I am telling you, I did not do these crimes, so how can I tell you how I did them?" I saw another brother in prison, Abu Asim Al-Makki (Muhammad Hamdi Al-Ahdal), who was famous for his heroic feats in the famous Battle for Tishin, Bosnia, in 1992. In this operation, he lost one leg and has been paralysed in one arm ever since. Abu Asim, who is already disabled, was beaten with shoes on his face. The interrogators beat him with baton on his disabled limbs and spat in his face. His face also looks like he has undergone severe physical and mental torture. Another brother famous for heroic feats in Afghanistan, Abu Ishaq Al-Makki was in Yemen. Prince Naif (the Saudi Interior Minister) travelled to Yemen and took this brother back in his own plane. He has been tortured severely in prison, stripped naked and beaten. One night whilst I was in prison, and the conditions were extremely tough upon the brothers, I met one of the brothers who saw a dream before Salat-ul-Fajr one night. He saw the Messenger of Allah (SAWS) and the Messenger (SAWS) said to him: "Inform the brothers on my behalf, that the angels are competing amongst themselves in writing down their rewards." This dream of the brother brought some relief and encouragement to the rest of the brothers. However, we did not say who had this dream, else that brother would be tortured for having the dream in the first place. In Ar-Ruwais, we were not allowed to supplicate to Allah (make dua) with our hands outstretched. Perhaps the interrogators knew in the bottom of their hearts the hadith of the Prophet (SAWS) that "there is no veil between Allah and the supplication of the oppressed one." We had to urinate in one litre bottles infront of the other brothers and attend to other needs in public as well. The interrogators constantly swore at and abused those working for Islam, amongst the scholars, Mujahideen and callers to Islam. They said that Sheikhs Salman Al-Owdah and Safar Al-Hawali (in Al-Hair Prison, Riyadh, since September 1994) were khawaarij (dissidents) and kafirs (disbelievers). There was one separate wing of Ar-Ruwais just for women. Here, they would keep the wives, daughters, mothers and sisters of the brothers. They brought the wives of one of the brothers and threatened to rape her unless the brother confessed to the crimes that they were accusing him of. The brother duly signed anything they asked him to. One brother escaped the country before he was arrested, so the Saudi Interior Ministry imprisoned seven women members of his family, for eight months, as a ploy to ask the brother to return. It was common for them to strip brothers naked and make fun of their privates. All this is from the country that calls itself Balad-ut-Tawheed (The Land of Tawheed) and whose ruler calls himself Khadim-ul-Haramain Ash-Sharifain (The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques). The names of some of the torturers at Ar-Ruwais are: Adnan Filimblaan (he was the worst) Talib Ad-Dhabbaagh Al-Qusayfaan (I cannot remember his first name) Ghazi Al-Judaibi Al-Zagzoug (he was the Head of Ar-Ruwais Prison, who is known to grovel to the Interior Minister, Prince Naif) As a finishing point, the former Egyptian Interior Minister, Zaki Badar, was sacked from his post because he was too harsh and inhumane in this torture methods, and many people died under his custody. The Saudi Interior Ministry duly hired him and he helped to organise the various torture methods on the brothers. He was Prince Naif's personal advisor on how to deal with Islamists. Praise be to Allah that he died whilst on a recent visit to the USA. Since being released, all the brothers have had their passports confiscated so that they cannot travel abroad. Furthermore, some brothers still suffer from permanent injuries inflicted on them in Ar-Ruwais. We ask Allah to release our brothers still inside: Hassan As-Sarehi, Muhammad Hamdi Al-Ahdal (Abu Asim Al-Makki), Abu Ishaq Al-Makki, Abu Shaheed Ash-Sharqi and others. Praise be to Allah, this only makes us stronger, as Allah says in the Quran: "Do you really think that you will enter Paradise, until Allah has decided from amongst you, those that make Jihad and those who are patient?" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since the fall of Ziad Birry, Somalia has become free for all the missionaries to roam there with their organizationworking under different guises. ThChristian proselytizing efforts increased amongst Somalis either through welcoming refugees to Europe and other Western countries, or through those who are tossing and turning in an episode of misery and sorrows as a result of tribal warfare. Within this troubled atmosphere, the Christians found the opportunity to build a church in Hergisa, and they strive to build many others like it in other cities. We Ask Allah Most Exalted to quash their hopes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Further, the suspect organizations which paved the way for the tragedy in Somalia, with homelessness and famines, and families being separated, were patiently waiting for the theatrical production to be completed. This indicates that all the false tears shed by the Christian countries when the famine was harvesting people to their graves in Bido and other places, was only to throw dust into the eyes of people. We saw that when Islamic organizations attempted to rescue the situation and to limit the tragedy, the Western Christian countries set off all their media alarm bells to warn of the possibility of the "fundamentalists" controlling East Africa, all this to justify their military invasion and to accelerate their efforts to occupy it. In the middle of this media commotion, American warships took to sea and landed troops on the Somali shores carrying weapons of warfare including Cobra and ACA 130 helicopter gunships, "in order to provide food for the starving"! What is also amazing is the fact that most of the Somali warlords were writing to America and the United Nations asking them to interfere militarily in Somalia as they suspected that this would free them from the flames. Instead we saw the American marines arrive to the shores of Mogadishu. As soon as this was publicized, other Western countries declared their readiness to send some of their troops to Somalia. Official bodies in these countries also declared that they would not be mere spectators with respect to what America did by keeping the region to itself. In order for these countries to be there for the division, they sent their forces which included Italian, German, and French troops as well as others. After a period of this occupation, news began to emerge about disputes between these occupants. This basically lit the wick of the people's anger leading them to take up arms against these invading forces. The participation of certain Muslim groups in this people's defense of their country -with the help of Allah- was mostly responsible for the big American losses. For the jets which were brought down by the RBG7, were brought down by the Muslim youth. Also, most of the tanks which were destroyed, were destroyed at the hands of these youth. America saw with its own eyes that the matter had gotten serious, and that this invasion was beginning to look more like Vietnam, and hence it cut its losses and completely withdrew in defeat from Somalia. Their ambassador in Kenya had previously warned them of the ferocity of Somali society, they did not take heed and blamed this on the fancy of the ambassador, however, it did not take long for them to see what they were promised. As America withdrew, so did all the other countries. However, some of the American warships remained on the shores of Mogadishu whilst other Western countries attempted to get a foothold in parts of Somalia, Germany concentrated on Barn and Lasqra where the Worsenggalia tribe lives, and Norway had its representatives in Las'anud for three years under the guise of an aid organization. Italy and Britain also concentrated on the areas which submitted to their occupation during their colonial period. This indicates that these countries are looking for the opportunity to return, for they have no intention of leaving their prey to convalesce and regain its strength after all their planning to divide it among themselves. The history of East Africa is a witness to religious transgressions by the Christian Ethiopians against the Muslim Somalis who seem to inherit these transgressions with every new generation. These incursions date back to the Islamic kingdoms of Taraz and continue through the eras of the Ethiopian occupation of the Somali lands including Harar. From 1977 to these days, when we see Jihad going through its highest stage, no sooner that we see the people recuperate from war for a short period of time that we see it going again and raging fiercely. The war throughout these years was one where victory was shifting between the two parties, as is the nature of the war between truth and falsehood. However, there are elements which accompanied this war and distinguished its battles, amongst which are: 1- Ongoing support from Christian countries to Ethiopia in its battles against the Muslims and their supplies of troops, money, and arms, in addition to political support. Everytime the Christian throne in this area began to topple, and the Muslims appear to be nearing victory, these countries would rush to help Ethiopia and stand by its side. As a contemporary example of the assistance of Christian countries to Ethiopia, America has been reported in the book "The red sea and the Arab Israeli conflict", "Ethiopia received from the United States between 1953 and 1974 economic aid to the value of 35 million dollars, and military aid to the value of 2,786 million dollars, these amounts were 50% of the aid which America paid to the entire African continent during this period." There was also a defense alliance between America and Ethiopia for 25 years until it was discontinued by Mangisto Hila Mariam. Mahmoud Shaker referreded in his book "Islamic History" to a speech made by the American minister of defense Robert McNamara before an armed forces committee sponsored by the American Congress which included: "The center of our interests in Africa is Ethiopia, and some of the other African countries...." When Ethiopia was about to fall into a political quagmire, America rushed to make amends between the government of Mangisto and the other groups, which finally led to the departure of Mangisto from Addis Ababa and his taking refuge in Zimbabwe. All this took place in accordance to the plans and the blessings of America in order to rescue Christianity and to further block the emergence of the Muslims in the region, and to remove the opportunity for the Muslims to have self determination. They also sponsored the Jabray front which is the more fundamentalist Christian group. When the militias of this group went into Addis Ababa, the West -at the forefront of which was America- stood by its side. America continues to this day to pour vast amounts of money on this group in addition to the provision of military support where there are 5000 American troops at the Debrezit air base. These American forces also partook in the three prong attacks on Mujahideen bases in Western Somalia in April 1994. Added to this are their political support and the other types of aid. BBC reported an article from the "James Defense weekly" that the Ethiopian defense minister admitted that America promised his government additional military aid including military jets, and that America also promised to organize the Ethiopian army which currently works as tribal militias most of whom are from Tigray. The report added that an American agent visited Addis Ababa in February and expressed his approval of the policies which are being pursued by the governing regime in Addis Ababa. This clearly indicates that the policies of invasions and transgressions which Ethiopia is pursuing in the African Horn are taking place under American planning and direction. The report also mentioned that Ethiopia is no longer of the same strategic value to America after the split of Eritrea as it is now a closed country with no sea port. However, America continues to use it as a trump card against the Muslim countries in the region. 2- Amongst the important elements which distinguished this war is the fact that Ethiopia dreamed throughout this war to reach the waters of the red sea, as it also had expansionist designs claiming that the Muslims are invaders with no right of existence in EastAfrica. This had been claimed openlyby the kings and heads of government of Ethiopia on numerous occasions. Ethiopian plots did not stop at this, they in fact strived continuously to affect the internal politics of Somalia through introducing puppets into Somali government and society in order to overtake Somalia and contain it. During the Djibouti meeting between Mangisto and Ziyyad Barry in 1986, Mangisto demanded that the seaside city of Zilg be given to him in exchange for his withdrawal from Belanby and Jaldujob which were occupied by Ethiopia after the 1977 war. The Tigray front which is governing in Addis Ababa continues to look for a sea port as did its predecessor governments. What is new now is the creation of opportunities for this group which had not been created for any previous Ethiopian government, through the fact that there is no longer a government, not even a weak one, which means that the traditional enemy "Somalia" no longer demands any concern. Added to this is the fact that all the fighting groups in Somalia arose and received their nursing in the laps of Ethiopia. From a second view, Ethiopia organizes mass migrations to Somalia. A responsible source in Somalia confirmed that Ethiopia is conspiring to change the demography of the coastal cities in Somalia. These mass migrations come at a time when the Somalis are fleeing their country and migrating away from the famine and lack of security, Ethiopia in turn helps these people by granting them an Ethiopian passport despite knowing their different nationality. In addition to this, the media in the West are giving an image of Somalia as a jungle with wild beasts which prey on all that go to it!! These Ethiopian migrants currently form a sizable minority in the major cities in Somalia, in particular the coastal cities. Ajjal has announced the granting of citizenship to those so called Ethiopian refugees in Hergisa at a time when the people in Hergisa are receiving the worst treatment in the camps in Ethiopia. Evidence at hand indicates that these Ethiopian refugees are heavily armed which is helping them to counter any obstacle in the way of their establishing in Somalia. From a third view, Ethiopia is striving vigorously to remove a psychological barrier and the enmity with the Somalis against the Christian Ethiopians so that they can overlook the Ethiopian transgressions. There is also an international Christian cooperation to prepare the climate for this. The Christian countries, which opened their doors for the migration of the Somalis, moved their offices, which usually met the refugees, from Kenya to Addis Ababa in order to associate the Somalis with Ethiopia as their original capital as desired by the Christian West. There was also an opening of a new Radio station in Addis Ababa which broadcasts its programs in the Somali language and is funded by an International Children's Fund in order to present an alternative for the Mogadishu station and Radio Hergisa, and in order to confuse the Somalis with the Ethiopian propaganda. This station also sends correspondents to Somalia to conduct interviews in order to influence public opinion. What is worse and more cunning than this are the incursions of the Ethiopian forces into Somali territory including the cities of Bourma, Jibily, and Jalkiyu, where they go on raids, steal what they can and extensively place land mines in various areas. They have also fired their weapons on many occasions at the mosque of Bourma leading to the wounding of members of the Islamic Union who were offering prayers. Information on hand also indicates that Western organizations are paying particular attention to the region of Udil where the city of Bourma is, and they are working on opening roads and paths, the plots behind these activities are presently unknown. It would not be unexpected if Ethiopia declares soon its annexation of Udil in view of their presence there, and in view of the fact that it has a sea port into the Red sea and it has the city of Zilg which Mangisto attempted to take previously. It is also the closest seaside city to Ethiopia, with the city of Bourma being no more than 120 kilometers away from Bourma. Another claim is the fact that the tribe of Jedbirsy which lives in the area is a weak tribe with many branches inside Ethiopia. The military commander in the occupied Somali territory sent both oral and written messages in July last year to the leaders in the city of Las'nud, threatening the population of Las'nud with aerial bombardment and a military invasion if they do not put a stop to the Muslim Da'wa efforts, under the claim that they are a source of stress and threat to the Ethiopian government. On the ninth of August 1996, Ethiopia launched heavy military campaigns both on land and in the air against the city of Jidu in Southern Somalia. This campaign was restricted to the cities which were under Islamic control in the area, with the Ethiopian invasion killing scores of innocent civilians and destroying many suburbs, ports and mosques where the name of Allah is mentioned. All these efforts are to destroy the alert elements in Somalia and the people who are calling to Islam, in order for the air to be clear for them to corrupt the land and take it over. What removes any doubt that the plan to take over the Somali ports had begun; is the report of the Ethiopian minister for transport, who is of Somali origin, to the BBC, that his government intends to expand its economic activities and requires a number of ports to use for their exports and imports. He also announced on his return from Djibouti that his government's state of readiness to use the neighboring ports including Barbara, Busasu, Mogadishu, Bourma, and Mombassa for 40% of their needs. An extradition treaty had also been signed prior to this announcement between Ijal and Addis Ababa which included the pursuit of suspects over each others borders. This treaty included the use of the Barbara ports without payment of taxes or port duties. In summary, the government of Ethiopia will not stop or spare an effort until it occupies a sea port and annexes this to its territory, there is no doubt that it is preparing to take over Somalia whilst its people are in a state of civil war. However, there continues to be some obstacles in their way which they are planning to remove, these obstacles include: 1 - The Jihad in Western Somalia. This had become obvious after the invasion which America and Eritrea took part in as allies with Ethiopia against the Mujahideen in Western Somalia in 1994. In this respect America promised vast amounts of money and armaments in order to close the boundary with Somalia. This was a mere preface to the conspiracy to take over the important cities such as Bourma and Birhidly. Ethiopian forces have already reached these cities and are threatening to disarm the people. However, when the Mujahideen increased their attacks using the militia strategy, the Christian alliance became distracted from their advance on Somalia. This clarifies the importance of Jihad in Western Somalia and the fact that it forms a Strategic post for the revival of the Muslims of Somalia. 2 - The sincere teachers of Islam, the callers to the way of Allah are constantly working to revive and advice society and enlighten them with respect to the reality of their situation and what dangers they are facing. For this reason the Christian front began to ambush the Muslim teachers. The nefarious Christians have so far assassinated Shaykh Abdul Qader who is an Imam in a Mosque in Bourma, whilst on his way to perform the night prayer. We have already mentioned their firing into a mosque in the same city. 3 - Instability in Ethiopia as the matter has not seeped into the Tigray front yet, for the Amhiru are ready to pounce as are the Urmu, who are preparing to reclaim their rights which had been usurped a few centuries before. The elections which took place in Addis Ababa were mere efforts to calm the situation. 4 - The language barrier which is making it difficult for them to easily mix with the Somalis, for this reason, they are expending a great deal of effort to leathe Somali language, many of which have this task .
