"The 'Ndrangheta mafia, which gained notoriety in August for its blood feud killings of six men in Germany, is alleged to have made illegal shipments of radioactive waste to Somalia, as well as seeking the "clandestine production" of other nuclear material..........Shipments to Somalia, where the waste was buried after buying off local politicians, continued into the 1990s" Guardian

If the Graads have spoken out, it won't matter if any anybody heed no attention to their voice. Their voice reflects the majority of the people and that is what matters the most.

The point, I don't think this group exists. it is just a propoganda by the secessionist media. The people of SSC were attacked by SL , not their own people. To raise a question of why SL finance and army such group is far cry from reality.

Mansa, time will tell what direction our people will go but the change of wind is blowing directly onto our faces. Majority of SSC are tired of the scramble for their land by these two entities. Some see it as an irreversible reality to be associated with one group at the expense of autonomy but that is indeed a low self-esteem as there is no justification that you will survive under the umbrella of failed political organization. We have entered a defining momment for SSC to adopt the building bloc system endorsed by the International community. Those who fear that this move will jeapordize our political and economic ties with our brothers and neighbours have biased estimates of the true risk involved. You are only taking an action program that you think is an alternative course of action to mitigate the crisis in your homeland. We Somalis have gone to the era of pre-colonialization, that is the state of nature where every clan or group shifts for itself. No clan entity can shield you from the plight, it is a permenant Somali government that can at least provide for your safety security. Is it not time to get rid of the apologists of the status quo and embrace a new change??? I embrace the move of the people Sanaag and Western Bari in creating their own adminstration, Maakhir.

A knowledge of the existence of something we cannot penetrate, our perceptions of the profoundest reason and the most radiant beauty, which only in their most primitive forms are accessible to our minds: it is this knowledge and this emotion that constitute true religiosity. In this sense, and only this sense, I am a deeply religious man Libax, A friend of mine forwarded me this video. Impressive documentary that lists all the great scientists of both European and Islam as well as other civilizations and How religious they were.

I am glad that everything went back to normal. It was quite shocking news both domestic and international.

Somalia: The Hijacked plane flew back to Djibouti safely Las Qorey, October 5 (Dhaharonline)-The cargo plane that was hijacked to Las Qorey was safely released today, according to the Secretary of State for interior and security department of Maakhir, Mr. Ahmed Hussein Yusuf. Mr. Yusuf also confirmed to us that all the boarding passengers, cargo, and equipment in the plane safely returned to the business people that had initially leased the plane to Bosaso. The plane was carrying khat, an amphetamine-like stimulant, which is a profitable commercial product in Somalia. “I am glad that we resolved the issues peacefully,” said Yusuf. The attackers were in partnership with the businesspeople, according to Mohamed Taar who is a well known businessman in the North and was among the attackers. “We were in partnership with them but got into squabble regarding unresolved transactions,” he said. Las Qorey a district of Madar region, one of the three regions that come under the newly created Makhir is now very calm. Makhir is a self-declared autonomous state that still remains unrecognized by the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia. Impeded by lack of international support and continuing social and economic challenges, Makhir aims to reverse the enormous environmental, political and economic problems faced by the region on a daily basis. Breaking into even smaller bits? Even the parts of Somalia that were steady are looking shaky again The Economist print edition 04 Oct, 2007 ______________ A PECULIARITY of Somalia is that while the south of the country, including its broken capital, Mogadishu, has burned, the north has been stable. Now, to the horror of those trying to put Mogadishu back together again, the north is beginning to crack too. Fighting broke out this week between Somaliland, the northern strip that has been virtually independent of the rest of the country for some 16 years, and Puntland, a semi-autonomous territory in the north-east (see map). Somaliland says it has driven Puntland forces out of Los Anod, a town in the disputed Sool region, killing six Puntlanders and injuring or capturing another 40-plus. Puntland says its soldiers have retaken the town. Yet another war seems to be breaking out. Sool is split between sub-clans backing either Somaliland or Puntland, while some of them want autonomy for Sool itself. Somaliland, a former British colony that was separate from the larger parts that were run by Italy, declared independence in 1991 and has since sought international recognition. Puntland's sense of identity is less strong; it has seen itself as a building block for a future federal Somalia. But Puntland is losing its grip. The Sool dispute has been compounded by the secession of much of the Sanaag region from Puntland, to form yet another self-governing entity in the north. Drawing on its history as a sultanate, Sanaag declared independence in July, renamed itself Makhir, and chose Badhan as its capital. Tension between Makhir and Puntland is high. A still worse headache for Puntland is the departure of its strongman, Abdullahi Yusuf, to become president of Somalia. He ran Puntland with authority and ambition, grandiosely hoping to turn it into the Horn of Africa's Dubai. When he went south, he took with him a lot of Puntland troops, vehicles, weapons and ammunition. Their departure emboldened other northerners with dreams of secession or autonomy, and may give Somaliland the edge if the dispute over Sool leads to war. Oil and gas add fuel to the ferment. Exploration rights in Puntland have been sold several times over. Somalia's prickly prime minister, Ali Mohamed Gedi, was furious when Mr Yusuf signed oil agreements without telling him, including one with a Chinese company. Mr Gedi has also refused to endorse exploration deals signed by Puntland's government. Meanwhile, Mogadishu is getting worse again. Fewer children are going to school. The city's markets are stagnant—quite the opposite of the government's assertions that things are back to normal. Government troops and the Ethiopian forces propping up Somalia's government are still being attacked by bombs, grenades and snipers of the Islamist militias ousted by Ethiopians early this year. The African Union promised to send 8,000 peacekeepers and then hand authority to a UN mission later this year. But several AU countries failed to honour their pledges. Uganda is still the only African one to have sent troops; with just 1,600 of them there, the UN is unlikely to come in and take over. The American administration and other Western governments still want to back Somalia's transitional government until elections due in 2009. A recent reconciliation conference in Mogadishu passed off without rancour, itself something of a success, and was bolstered by the apparent failure of a rival meeting, mainly of Somali Islamists, in the Eritrean capital, Asmara. Koora tuunshe and JB, I think the disagreement that led this plane to be hijacked is probably an ownership interest or some unresolved issues regardings past transactions. The elders, and adminstrators from states of Puntland and Maakhir should immediately intervene and mediate these business partners. I am planning to visit Laasqorey in the future right after the second phase of construction of its port starts. INshallah.

"The Mullah: I am not the docile, reclusive, apolitical and silent bystander of the old Wadaad - neutralized by the greedy, decadent, self-seeking and conceited secular politicians and reduced to reciting verses of the holy Quran over the treats of tender meat of the sacrificial young goats and other lavish festivities of the affluent. I am the natural, spiritual and the moral leader of the society. I have been out in the cold for too long. I am here to replace the petty political chameleons that come to nothing - impotent politicians with voracious appetite for avarice, who betrayed the public trust and shirked the responsibilities bestowed upon them. I am here to assume my rightful position – the topmost. " Siiarag is a marvelous writer

Long and interesting to read if you have the patience. It is also a partial rejoinder to Prof. Said Samatar. Good constructive debate. By: Abdalla A. Hirad The reason for my fear of the alternative is very much related to what Professor Samatar calls “segmentation”—a tool which he often handily and rightly employs to analyze the illusive Somali political reality and its multi-faceted and multi-dimensional arena. Actually, I have pursued the concept of territoriality, perhaps for the lack of a better word, which combines “segmentation”, which is the organic aspect, with the geographic or mechanical element of the disintegration phenomenon. It means that each segment of a clan group has kinship right claim to a territory. I have presented a number of unpublished papers on the concept of “territoriality” both at the Somali studies Association Conferences, in the early nineties, and to the African Studies Association, in the year 2000. Territoriality suggests that upon the commencement of the civil war in Somalia, the population in major population centers, which could be considered cosmopolitan in terms of clan composition, returned to their original homesteads as segments prevailing in those location took control, usually with a varied degree of hostility to their guests from other parts of Somalia. Thus, Mogadishu had naturally and easily fallen into the hands of the ****** clan, where they drove out all but people of their own sub-lineages. However, clan politics driven by warlords and the civilian political clan elite took its toll to split up the ****** community into its traditional segments. Hostilities heightened through the years and leeriness and suspicion between the sub-clans took the place of the hoped for political cohesion and solidarity. This phenomenon is by no means particular to the ******. It is observable throughout Somalia. What makes the conflict in Mogadishu so towering over those in other parts is the political value assigned to its control by warring factions and clans—given its political symbol as the Capital of Somalia. This particular conflict rests theoritically on the security dillema in the region. "Somaliland" fears for its security or its assumption that they are the next target after Mogadisho's insurgency dampens, therefore, preemptive strikes ensures ultimate security guarantor. The other problem is that Hargeisa feels that Puntland forces are overstretched thus lacking countervailing balance to counter the Clan-based Somaliland forces. In many ways, this is a great miscalculation that would cause the local tribe of Puntland to feel acute existential threats from their neighbors. It is however very likely that this new conflict would challenge Adde's leadership to step up to the plate and manifest his military skills to secure resounding victories. Adde Muse has been engaged in activities of parochial interest that probably created an environment conducive to the fracture and division of the community. It is time that Muuse restores the sense of extended security assurances and mutual trust of the community

Dr. Tobias Hagmann is a regional expert and lecturer of the university of Zurich. In this article, he sheds more light on the popular misconception of the name "Ogadan" and the political roots of the current crisis in the Somali region. The article " aims to provide a better understanding of the internal political dynamics underlying the current crisis in Ethiopia’s Somali region(3)." Only recently, region 5 was ruled by ONLF, which held key administrative posts after the creation of the Somali Regional State at the beginning of the 1990s. Following ONLF’s ousting by EPRDF in 1994, ethnic Somali politicians belonging to the Ethio-Somali Democratic League (ESDL) (1994-1998) and later on to the Somali People’s Democratic Party (SPDP) (1998-today) governed region 5. While many ******** perceived the creation of the ESDL and the SPDP as a stratagem by EPRDF to marginalize ONLF, almost all of the region’s clan groups were represented in these two political parties. Indeed Duke, Ali Fatah has come up with great ideas in somehow simplifying the complexity and the nature of Somalia's conflict and those with vested interest in the status quo.
