  4. I do agree with you. The Somali communities of MN area need to come together and pressure Channel Five Eyewitness News to retract the story or apologize. I’ve been following this story very closely and Channel Five vigorously reported the suspects were Somalis or East Africans before the police gave any description of the suspects. I watched the 6 o’clock news and they interviewed a guy who was robbed a year ago in the uptown area and thought the robbers were Somali because of their accent. No mention of police report of that alleged incident taking place. I think WCCO and Star Tribune didn’t link the shooting to Somalis. Some critics accused WCCO to being afraid to report suspect’s race. See Don Shelby In the Know responding to those accustions. A few days later, police made some arrests and held a press in which they said they never described the suspects as Somalis. It was some media group. It seemed Channel Five was certain the killers of being Somalis/East Africans and readily connected the crime to the Somali community, and removed the news clips and articles from their website few days later. Read the article below about the story. Email Channel Five and tell them they’re disgrace to the news organizations. Remind them to do their job professionally by being impartial and diligent. Nick Coleman: Somalis owed apology after Uptown arrests After the appalling murder in Uptown of Michael Zebuhr, a visitor who died after a street robbery on March 18, Twin Cities blogs and discussion forums zeroed in on the likely culprits. The killers, many agreed, were Somalis. Or, as one enlightened soul put it in a posting on craigslist.org, "dirty somali ....." I've deleted the expletive he felt free to use. I would like to introduce that fellow to some Somalis I know. But maybe he would rather pass. Mr. Big Mouth was wrong: Police have not arrested any Somalis in Zebuhr's murder. Instead, they have arrested a number of good old born-in-the-USA Americans. What we almost had here was a 21st century lynching: No one ended up swinging from a tree, but some people were definitely in the mood. "I was worried about something like that happening," says Omar Jamal, head of the Somali Justice Center, who met with Uptown residents after the shooting. "If I had turned on my radio and found out that a couple of Somalis were killed out of vengeance, I would not have been surprised." At one point, Jamal announced a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the killers. It was a put-up or shut-up move, but it might have intensified suspicions that some Somali gang members had made the jump from robbery to murder. Bad guys are bad guys, whatever color, and whatever caliber they carry. But there was something over the top and deeply racist about the Somali-bashing that went on after the Uptown shooting. And some parts of the media played a part in raising the temperature. After a car was stopped by police and its occupants detained as possible suspects, Channel 5 Eyewitness News quoted "police sources" as saying the suspects were Somali or possibly East African. Leaving aside the fact that some cops can't tell an East African from an East Sider, that's like saying a suspect is Irish or maybe Western European. It is meaningless by itself. Other TV stations followed Channel 5's lead. An entire ethnic group was under suspicion, without any description of what the killers looked like. Neither newspaper in town reported the Somali accusation (although the Pioneer Press did report on Jamal's offer of a reward). At the Star Tribune, newsroom policy allows the race of suspects to be reported when race "can be used as part of larger description of a crime suspect," including "standard categories of identification such as age, build or weight, height and hair style or color, or includes some of those categories plus other very specific identifiers such as scars or clothing." If police are looking for a 5-foot-10 black suspect about 20 years old weighing 180 pounds in a Vikings jacket with a tattoo on his face, shaved head and an apparent Somali accent, that should make it into the newspaper. But "police are looking for a Norwegian or possibly a Scandinavian"? No way, Sven. Casting suspicion on all members of a group doesn't do anything useful. It just whips the bigots into a frenzy. Were cops looking for Somalis? "That never came out from us," interim Police Chief Tim Dolan said at the news conference announcing arrests in the Zebuhr killing. "That assumption was made by members of the media and so forth. We never went there." Later that day, Channel 5 news anchors read a two-sentence non-apology: "Sources within the Minneapolis Police Department initially thought the suspects in the Uptown murder were of East African descent. That turned out not to be the case." Huh. Not even a mention of the word Somali. And no, "We apologize to Somalis for carelessly casting aspersions. We went off half-cocked." "I want them to correct their mistake," Jamal says. "Many people still think it was Somalis. Our community is furious." A murder scars the city and scares a neighborhood. People want answers: Fast answers, easy answers. And, it turned out, false answers. This was a Digital Age lynching. Apologies are due. More importantly, there is a lesson to be learned. 5. Originally posted by Khadir: In this day and age, polygamy has no place in islam, and in any society. Subxaanalaah. You argue some parts of the Qur’an are awful, and can’t coexist with modern day society lifestyle? Such utterance of word of kufr. Let me see if this analogy would help. We know Allah has permitted older women to discard their outer garments so long they’re too old to bear children and have no hopes of getting married. This is in the Qur’an by the way but I’m paraphrasing it. Would it be correct & wise for a Muslim to preach against this verse in fear of other women who are not in this age group abusing the verse and possibly falling short of Jilbaab? You would agree it’s Allah’s given right and no one has the right to take that option away from older women no matter the abuse if any. Anyone can argue this day & age of fitnah, Muslim women should keep their outer clothing but that would mean overruling of a verse in the Qur’an and imposing a misguided interpretation.
  6. I can’t believe you declared war on poor faarax! I think it is the nature of Somali society to want to know your qabiil or nationality for no good reason before they get to know you first. We have strong desire to know one's tribal affiliation or nationality whether a nomad next door, African customer at the supermarket or the Middle Eastern Imam at the mosque. I don’t ask others about their qabiil but I had an episode with Somali women whom I was helping at a shopping mall couple of years ago. She asked for my qabiil and the city I am from. She immediately mentioned a distance relative of my father. I told her not to look any further. She referred to me as her son from that point on. It may be normal for our elders to ask those kinds of questions but I see no harm in revealing your qabiil as it doesn’t necessarily make you an outcast, at least not in public. Wouldn’t it be easier and wiser to possibly give the answer and educate them later? You certainly know sooner or later that question will pop up. Nur, do you have a blog or still under planning?

Walaal, I’m sorry my Somali isn’t offensive or abusive. I have a habit of using a regional slangs as I enjoy listening to Odey Cabdulle, & ow-koombe. It is starting to affect me as you can tell. I’m not good at explaining but I’ll try. Erayga Washamsi waxaa yaqaan dhalinyarada ama ciyaalka dugi quraan ku soo dhigtay wadankeenii. Ma aqaan cida aliftay laakiinse waa ciqaab ay macalimiinta dugsiyada quraanka isticmaali jireen. Cunugii dugsiga imaan waaya amaba subaca quraanka baran waaya ayaa Washamsi lagu ciqaabaa. As you know Wa Shamsi waa suurad quraan marka intii circle la suubiyo cunuga la ciqaabayona dhexda la galiyo ayaa qof walba loo dhiibaa ul yar oo fudud si uu ugu garaaco cunuga dhexda fadhiya hal mar asagoo aayad ka mid ah suurada washamsi qaadanaaya. You’re basically participating subac quran while beating your dugsi mate. Waa ciqaab iyo ceeb isku dhex jira. Ciyaalka ayaa lagugu ceebenayaa inaad dib u socod tahay oo quraanka baran weyday and at the same time getting beat up by a light stick. Marka suurada Wa Shamsi ma dheera laakiin ciyaalka at times repeat the same verse to keep the beating going. Cunugii hal mar lagu qaado Wa Shamsi, he'll make sure he doesn't get humiliated ever again so it was a rare event but very exciting for kids. So my question was Kheyr miyaan circle galineynaa oon ku goobaneynaa? I hope that makes sense.
  9. You gotta be kidding me. Somali girls attempting suicide for faaraxs? I thought certain things were meant for certain people. It’s tragic walaahi to see young girls become statistic. They need to seek professional help.

Get off his back, women. Washamsi maa la qaadooyaa idinka Khayr, committed relationship could mean many things but I don’t know what you’re trying to imply. Fartun, ha u bixin nooh. Selective hearing is a good tool for those whom you don’t want to offend too much. There’s a thin line between you and your in-laws so learn the art of walking the line without stepping over. No matter what people will always talk on your back & blame for what you don’t control. That’s the nature of our people and they do it more often to the newly weds. Give first priority to your health & family.
  11. Let's beat the Sheikhs now. Way to go bright people JB, go to the masjid for once and see what's being said about the issue before you even lay a general blame on them. Sheh, you're reading too much into my post. Take off the glasses. I think Xiin & scarlet said what I needed to say which is showing these images in a book [dealing with another subject matter] won't do any purpose for the suffering of Somali women or work towards putting this berberic act to an end.
  12. Let’s not personalize the subject. I have seen the opening of the book on a Somali TV and the guest speakers included some prominent Somali elders namely Abdirizaq Haji Hussein but I don’t know if that was the first or the new edition. I haven’t seen or read the book and I don’t know the wisdom behind drawing deformed images of Somali women genitals. Is he in search of publicity or sympathy that may last a day or two? There is got to be a better strategy of keeping the awareness alive and going. Before you beat the drums for the author, here’s link of a paragraph he supposedly wrote in an article couple of years ago which linked Somali men & Hijabi women to terrorism. The author of the article later apologized to the community and confessed someone else perhaps the head of the paper added that paragraph.
  13. Kafaaxiye, do you know the author? Is he Dr. Xasan Abiikar, editor of Warsan Times of Minneapolis?
  14. Is it possible Eithopia is using him and giving him something in return?

  17. Nur, Jazaakallah. A timely topic. You’re in it for the long ride. Try to convince this hard-headed soul who claims to have uttered the Shahada and yet refuses to agree with its terms and conditions.
  18. Come to think of it, saxib Jimcaale, that was the last perfume I had recently. We are just too predictable aren't we? Xoogsade, Not anymore. The ladies have beaten us to it. They’re scoring high as they mock Somali men endlessly. Such a typical Somali girl fantasy. That brand is very popular in our community. I’am not cologne type of guy but I have received it for a gift recently and it’s sitting in the cabinet collecting dust.

    please explain

Blessed said it right. I think registration marriage means doing the marriage at or with your local government alone without meeting or following the process of marriage set by the sharia. Under Islamic sharia, marriage requires the consent & acceptance of both parties, legal guardian/representation, Maher be stated and agreed, Imam/Sheikh to state the marriage and two adult witnesses present among many other secondary requirements. Most people I know do it both ways. They first go through the regular marriage process with the Imam, hold the ceremony and then have the legal paper work filled with the government after the wedding. Pi, It all depends on where you live. Some Muslim countries may require Qaadi/judge present at the marriage ceremony but in the US, you don’t need state appointed judge or official as the Imam will play that role. Most Imams are licensed to perform marriage ceremony so they do the paperwork necessary for your local government to issue your marriage license.
  20. Come’on guys, be easy on the girl. Show some nomadsm. Originally posted by Rahima: The problem with Muslim society is that all we concentrate on is what the women should be doing or wearing whilst our men feel that they can prance around as free willy. Bingo! Isn’t that the whole argument of Taxriirul Mar’a movement which was introduced in Muslim countries some 40 or so years ago? Amazingly enough, they seem to have a fair share of representation in this forum. Can someone start a page titled; why do Somali men wear One Man Show cologne? Much better topic. Than again, what the heck am I doing in this corner?
  21. Which SOL girl ayaa ku daadisay AU? Shame on you! You caused all these flames shooting up the sky. 22. You would rather bring our loved ones to the discussion than refute the main points intelligibly. Such a second grade mindset with no degree of intellectual capacity whatsoever. You’ve proven my suspicion that your mouth is prone to utter nonsense.
  23. Horn, I can sense some contradiction in my above statement but by professing the Shahada puts him into the fold of Islam. I’m not in a position to decide his Islamness whether it goes beyond name or not but he certainly has a track record of having plenty of time passing harsh judgment on Islamic traditions, laws and customs. I wonder why he gets so defensive whenever a nomad criticizes swing clubs, gay bars and prostitution. Maybe he wishes to run for office one day and concerned that someone might google him up.
  24. How would it feel to debate and try to convince a solid rock to find a shelter for the upcoming winter storms? It really feels that way when you engage a debate about Sharia with someone who doubts the infallibility of the prophets and argues his knowledge about Islam is beyond imagination that he does not need the hadiths or the work of the Taabiciyin & Culumaa of Islam. You don’t expect a carpenter to design world-class airplane and likewise, you don’t discuss graduate level mathematics with second grader. That would be pointless. I am in no way suggesting to stop educating people about Islam. That would be wrong as prophet Nuux cs spent 950 years calling his people to the deen. SB is indeed Muslim but he rejects the Sunnah and picks and chooses parts of the Quran. For instance, he repeatedly cites the verses in regards with compulsion in religion but refuses to the ones that direct Muslims to strictly follow and adhere to the prophet’s sunnah [read al-Hashr 7 ]. A good analogy of this would be accepting prophets Mohamed, Yusuf & Ibrahim while rejecting Issa, Adam or Zakariya. Separating the Quran from the sunnah is similar with separation of the shahada of Allah to that of the prophet csw or that of a salaat and its sujuud. Believing in only one prophet does not constitute believing in all the messengers and a prayer with no sujuud is just not a prayer [with exception of Janazah]. All of these things are inseparable. Sharia isn’t as simple as locking up or stoning anyone that commits adultery or steals. It has rules and regulation that need to be followed just like other systems. Actually, it is more difficult if not nearly impossible to prove a case under Islamic sharia. Now that SB mentioned adultery, the court would have to bring four witnesses who saw the act with their naked eyes. Keep in mind seeing two people naked in bed doesn’t mean they did it. The court would have to prove the alleged crime took place. Four witnesses need to testify under oath they saw both parties’ genitals come together like a bowel of cereal and spoon. Yeah that difficult. Not if it’s done in the middle of the highway with all traffic passing by. Perhaps you don’t know this but the court has no business forcing to have you confess or drag you to the court about something you allegedly did behind closed door unless it involves a criminal act on others. Islam encourages against confessing/broadcasting your sins since Allah kept your secret with you.
